It's not much more hilly than the Mille Cymru. And arriving at 600k on the time limit and out of energy is fine.

Ah, but I was fitter then.  Definite lack of miles this year

Not sure if anyone is still looking to book accommodation for this event but, if so, it may be worth pointing out that although Burnley is the closest Travelodge to the start, there is a slight hill (Nick O'Pendle) between them so if you're planning to ride to & from the start you may be better staying at Blackburn instead ;D

You can go from the Travelodge to Padiham and then follow the A671 to meet the A59, turn right for Skipton then it's shortly a right turn to Pendleton.  Only a mile or two further than Nick of Pendle and as flat as anything else up here.  Sufficient unto the ride itself are the hills thereof!

Pete

I'm really impressed with your detailed knowledge of the area.   8)

If you get a moment, we would really like it if you could please lay out similar detours around the actual climbs on the route !!      :smug:
I’ve decided I’m not old. I’m 25 .....plus shipping and handling.

I believe one of or number from last year (not me) rode back home to Halifax after the event.  The gauntlet has been well and truly thrown down in that respect.

Given the price of trains from Darlo, if I was to ride, I'd almost certainly have to cycle to Pendleton and back :-\

Hmm, suppose I better figure out where to stay before and after the event given I'll be travelling up/down from Surrey.  Problem is, I am not sure where the start is.  Is it in Pendleton (or is that just a marker for AUK website purposes)?

Currently thinking of camping, as it will be summer, and it appears there are a couple of places west of Clitheroe that would do the job.  Any recommendations or otherwise (either for campsites or cycle friendly B&Bs) would be appreciated.

I stayed at the Angram Green Cottage campsite in Worston and it was fine, apart from getting back to a wet, collapsed tent and soden sleeping bag. Camping needs to be pre-booked. Popular with families with noisy kids but after 600km + 10000m climbing sleep will not be a problem.

OK, the little light pencil mark in the diary has become a big fat Sharpie mark.

I know it will be hardcore, but I will have 3 600s in my legs by then, plus a multitude of 3/400s. If I don't do it this season, I may never be in this shape again. Seems a fitting ride to go hyper on.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

I've booked into the Clitheroe campsite run by the Camping&Caravanning Club.  For those thinking of staying in the area, they currently have a special offer of 20% off grass pitches in June if booked in May (reducing price from £42 to £35 for 3 nights, Fri-Mon).

Transport (train) and accommodation (travelodge) sorted for this ride.

Just need a route sheet and I am good to go! Really looking forward to it, I think.

There is mention of a sleep stop, I am guessing there won't be a lot of time to sleep based on the reports and comments from last year, but it's good to know that there is somewhere to at least try and get half an hour or whatever.

I will have a small rucksack with me, does anyone know if the org can look after it for the duration? (I am not expecting it to be carried to the sleep stop or anything, just need it looking after for the weekend).

This ride does give me the fear, but I am really rather excited.

Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

You can always leave it in my car in Pendleton.  I'll be the one on the red bike as per my picture thingy on here (and a red car for that matter).

I recced Hardknott and Wrynose for the first time last week on an otherwise enchanting perm (L'al Lakeland - recommended  ).  On the sweary scale, these are fucking cunty bastards.  In both the upsy and downsy directions.  Nasty bagginses

Hardest things I've ever walked up and down with a bike...

Walking up, yes. But down? It's only a series of 1:3 hairpins that will test your bike handling skills to the limit. What's not to like about that? :)

That is the major reason why I have never even attempted going up them on two wheels.

Oh and you missed out the steep drops off the side of the road at that point :)

The last time I rode down there, it was wet. Fun. At least the earlier hail had melted by the time I got there.

Awesome - may take you up on that.  Sure it'll all work out in the end.

I know the routesheet just needs to say "go up every big hill in the North of England" - but any news on routesheet?  I got an Email to say it would be out around 1st May - but it's all quiet so far!

Gale force wind and snow (in May!) scunnered that idea.  As did the cars using the full width of the road (with the squeel of tyre and reek of smoking rubber).  Wrynose was managable but hardknott, erm, not.

I didn't even walk down on the tarmac as cleats were sliding.  Had to walk down on the grassy verge...

Hence the desire to have a 27" gear on this ride  :smug:
