Vangos to tend to be the more scout-proof than most IME

First use, they managed a 5 cm tear due to a caught zip :(

:( - More does not mean totally. Which bit of the tent did they rip?

Had a bit of an accident in Betws-y-Coed (and Llanberis) the other day. I went to price up new sleeping bags, as my very old Decathlon cheapie has pretty much no warming qualities whatsoever, and accidentally left with:

  • a can of gas (nice to have a spare but not strictly necessary)
  • some nifty little feet which clip to the bottom of the gas bottle (OK that's cool)
  • a new day-walk-sized rucksack rather than my giant climbing sack, and
  • a water pouch thing for the new bag

And no sleeping bag, of course. That'll have to wait until the next trip! Thankfully the nice bloke in Cotswold Outdoor believed me when I explained I'd left my CTC card at home, otherwise it would've been even more painful ;)

Mrs Wow and I went to "Go Outdoors" in Pitsea for some bits-and-pieces prior to our trip on Thursday.

We bought some collapsible dishes, a collapsible washing up bowl and hat I thought would be a handy in-tent light: given that this last has an on and an off switch, one would have thought that it stayed on when one pressed the on button and turned off when one pressed the off button. It doesn't. It only stays on when you are pressing a button and that's no bloody good when it's hanging in the tent in the middle of the night.
The loss of humanity I could live with.

Inflatable pillow from Aldi.

Nearly buying a quilt as a lighter alternative to a sleeping bag, too. Sadly funds don't really permit.

The positive has just given me a box.

It contains a stainless steel solo pot 900 :D

I've had this specifically for bitb meals. All of my alpkit pots fit inside too

I was in Tiso a couple of days ago to spend a gift voucher (itself a reward for buying some new hiking shoes a while ago) and bought myself another Landranger map.  While I was browsing I had a quick climb inside a Wild Country Zephyros 2XL Lite, and was amazed at the space available for lanky Europeans.  240cm inside length is just what the doctor ordered.  Limited stock!, sale price!, etc. etc., so I decided to buy one.

Of course, now the weather is blowing a gale and raining.

Hi Arellcat, I have the Wild Country Zephros (heavy). At 1.5kg its not so bad but I like the quality of the materials comapred to my mates Lazer which is nearly a 1/3rd the weight. We we last camped he had to borrow pegs from me as his were just blowing out.

An Exped Airmat 12LXW, in the hope that it may be a better long-term mat solution for barakta than the cheap-but-shoulder-friendly CampingGaz airbed she's been using recently.  We got a nasty reminder this weekend that cheap airbeds are only shoulder-friendly for as long as they hold air, and a visit from the p*nct*r* fairy can ruin your weekend, even if you do manage to patch the hole.

It appears to be made of the same stuff as DownMats, so should be orders of magnitude more durable, and includes the excellent Schnozzel phallic pump bag thingy.  The absence of filling means the packed size isn't that far off that of a DownMat.  Hopefully she'll get on with it.

They're currently unobtanium in the UK, so have ordered from a German site.

Been looking at larger tents recently and have just ordered a A Vango Pulsar 300
It was a choice between that and an Octane 3
Not a lot in the weight difference .6kg but the Pulsar comes with a groundsheet for the porch and is in not such a bright colour as the new Octane  ;D
Also managed to find it online for £137 when the Octane was £180
1st trip will likely be across to Mildenhall

Another very old tent; this time the 1 person version of last weeks tent.

It narks a bit that I'm having to buy tents as old as me to get something that is actually useable.

A new/spare windshield for the stove. I had an old one which is 8 fold but are very hard to find in shops, so I found one on ebay.

I also bought to EasyAcc batteries and a folding solar panel.

And my Clarion's new pans arrived today. With the little duck and sometimes TGL needing quantities of whatever we eat, we needed some bigger pans. Ours were getting a bit tired, anyway. We have gone for the MSR Flex 3 ones, which have good reviews and are a reasonable size.
