Title: Glastonbury
Post by: rogerzilla on 24 June, 2011, 08:38:33 pm
Watching BB King.  He looks well; I didn't recognise him at first without the big glasses.

Mozzer is on next, if he doesn't throw a hissy fit.  "First Of The Gang To Die" is a good singalong tune, if he does it.

Awh rats, missed of it. He's playing Embra on Sunday. I tried to persuade pingu to ditch our Kings of Leon tickets in favour of the old dude, but he wouldn't let me :-(

Just watched bits of BB.  Don't know whether it's my poor TV speakers or the lousy sound set-up at the stage but there were big chunks of music where it was difficult to tell if they were all in the same key.  It was certainly one of the biggest collections of unacceptable shirts ever put together (if you don't count Norwich City) and probably the biggest total waistline on a British stage.  But BB will always be one of the greats and I bet some people will have been amazed by just what a singer he is, like Freddie King.

The sound from Glasto sounds  always a bit crap to me!   I'm off to see BB King at Manchester Apollo tomorrow, and hopefully the shirts will be toned down ( but I doubt it somehow)  still,  he's not doing bad for his age!!!!

"The cast of Live And Let Die" was my first thought about the backing band  ;D  Damn, he's good though.

Glasto lost it about 10 year back when it got near impossable to get for free and all the hippies / travellers and wrong ones stopped going. It's just full of post graduates nowadays n 40+ year olds with children.

Best gig I seen at Glasto was Keano Reeves ? or whatever is name is, he got a band together called Dogstar I  think ? Well they got mud  bombed off stage

If you can avoid arthritis, which, sadly, some don't, there's no reason you shouldn't play well for ever.  It's the voice that usually goes a bit.  The great classical maestro Segovia was still playing concerts in his very late eighties.  One of the last he did was in Rochdale (where I'm exiled).  It's thought this may have been responsible for his subsequent demise.  (He didn't sing a word, though.)

I think 5x200 audax in one week is a little to much for me. It was 7x200. Now it's 3x200 in 5 days. I'm trying to do 3x200 a week at the mo and its going OK/Obsessive.

No, he just needs to stop playing it live. The Smiths version is perfection, nobody else could do it justice. It's like trying to draw the Mona Lisa on an Etch-a-Sketch. I quite liked Meat Is Murder though, they are clever enough to interpret it rather than replicate it.

I missed BB King (I was marshalling the club 10), I hope I can catch it on iPlayer or something. I regret not going to see him in Cardiff a couple of years ago, there's only him and Buddy Guy left now of the old bluesmen.

Not when I've been there it hasn't. In fact, there is very little to suggest a tv presence.

Watching it on tv doesn't give you much of an idea of what the festival is like. It isn't really the big stages, it's all the crazy shit going on in the places the cameras can't reach.

The one thing that annoys me about Glastonbury is how the organiser thinks he has the right to close roads to the public.

We haven't had a Solstice Warty this year, but the last two have ben along roads which have purportedly been closed to stop gatecrashers. They have been manned by young men whose job it is, presumably, to stop people entering the festival site.

That did not stop us form using the roads in question, but we ignored the requests / orders / instructions of the young men in order to access them.

The whole complexion of the event changed ten years ago when the built the new fence and Mean Fiddler took over security. It's very much a moneyed middle class gig now. The last time of glorious mayhem was probably '99 when there were about 250,000 people on site

No I don't think it was live either. I quite liked U2 in around 1981-82 but now they seem totally lacking in self-deprecating humour and irony. I baited an aquaintance on facebook who was raving about them with the phrase "god-bothering tax-dodgers" and he replied "they're Irish and we're in the UK so it doesn't affect us"  ::-)

I find it even more annoying that Bono steals bits of other songs (Primal Scream, Joy Division amongst many). Pay your respects with a proper cover, don't appropriate a line or two when it suits you!

If you watch it with the sound down they look like any other Christian rock band.

Iirc there was a fence back then (87).
Tbh with all the various itinerate groups that arrived and set up camp outside the main site, as you could then, there was nearly as good a festival to be had for free outside the wall. Happy days.

I used to clean with Coldplay. Sorry, Halls of Residence rooms which were horrendous. But I got to meet some lovely people including a gregarious chap called Chris and a shy fellow called Johnny. They had this band which they reckoned were going to be huge but they were not sure if they were going to be called The Cold Play or Coldplay. Needless to say that we told them that the first option sounded a tad wankerish. Anyways, we went to see them and we did not think they were that bad tbh. I saw them a few times and then they went HUGE. I faithfully bought their albums but apart from Album's No 1 and 2 the others were a pile of poo.

It was nice doing karaoke with them though  ;)

Can't believe the BBC haven't got any Pulp or Radiohead footage, especially when the main stage acts are such dross. Apparently the Pulp set was fantastic but they aren't set up to broadcast from there >:(

I was last there in '99 and whilst the music wasn't much better it seemed a bit more freer back then, I suppose some of the other cracking festivals have stepped in to pick up the pieces a bit but it's certainly not what it was.

The Park stage has had Radiohead, Pulp, Wild Beasts, Caribou, The Walkmen, Graham Coxon, Gruff Rhys, John Grant, The Bees and Warpaint to name but a few, all artists I've got albums from and all who I'd have loved to see some coverage of.

Personally, I loved Pulp's early music; find their later stuff merely entertaining.  Radiohead, I don't have strong enough antidepressants for.

My thoughts originally, and I can't listen toRadioheads recordings, but they are really excellent live.

I saw them live after giving in to Mrs Aidan ( who likes them)  a couple  of years ago and they were great, the Beeb showed their 1997 Glasto set the other night which has been hailed as the best Glasto set ever, and it was truly excellent.   I still cant listen to their recordings though!

I know lets give even more air time to to a load of commercialise pop rubbish that already gets rammed down our throats 24/7 for the rest of the year, whilst all the talented bands that could actually do with some airtime, that is mainly dominated by Cowellesque garbage, get overlooked.

I'm glad I don't pay a licence fee, no doubt the BBC are trying to convice folk Glastonbury didn't exist before they started broadcasting it, like Sky and Football.

She had the opportunity to come out and blow us all away with a tailored set to suit the occasion, instead it was just drivel.

I'm not a fan or the target audience, but I can recognise a world-class performer at the top of her game when I see one. Or maybe I was just looking at her legs  :P Nothing Simon Cowell has been associated with is nowhere near that good.

Now Pendulum, that really was a shower of shit.

Glastobury ain't about the big bands in my opinion. Id of loved to have seen the legendary  Greg Wilson do his set for one and I think there was about another 100 new artist doing sets as is every year.

Agree. And that's why I'm disappointed with the BBC coverage this year, and a little bit disappointed in the line up in general (I still can't believe Beyonce headlined closing day!).

Of course, I could buy a ticket and go there for real instead of complaining on here, but at the same time I'm a bit disappointed that the BBC seem to be focusing on the acts that I could hear if I tuned into Radio 1. In the past it's been a much more varied pallet of artists. I'd never have heard of Manu Chao for instance if it hadn't been for his awesome performance a few years ago, and the Raconteurs set last year is a Youtube favourite of mine. But so far there's been nothing like that this year. 1 song from Warpaint (I'm sure their set was longer than that) and maybe Paulo Nuttini's set. I'm sure there's more footage to come over the coming weeks, but I can't help feel the BBC have spent too much time/money setting up to record the famous acts and not enough on what makes Glastonbury what it is.

Watched the first day's recording last night.

Is it me, or does it just seem that there was only U2 there?

And WTF was that with Biffy Clyro? BBC, get your act together, you show us shit loads of U2, having done a seperate show just of their performance, then only show on song by Biffy... PAH!

Has it spoiled the atmosphere at all that they have found a dead Tory in the crapper, or is that par for the course at Glastonbury?

The headline acts have been getting crapper and crapper over recent years. With all the money and prestige they've been able to afford bigger acts. What the fuck is the point of having U2, Coldplay, Beyonce and other has-beens? It's hardly contemporary. Yehuda is right, the joy of the festival is all the smaller stages. That said Underworld in 99 and Moby in 2000(?) on the main stage were two of the best gigs I've ever seen.

Could this be why smaller, more intimate, festivals are booming? I am thinking of such as Bestival (although it pushing it to call that smaller etc etc), deershed etc.

It seems like every year there is another festival cropping up, where I live there are 3 in the next month alone (and I am pretty sure North Yorkshire hasn't suddenly become the centre of the music universe)

I think that has to do with money. Bands make money touring these days, whereas it used to cost them to tour. Couple that with the incredible increase in affluence over the last 15 years, especially amongst the young, and festivals are a money-spinner.

I think the Green Man Festival (http://www.greenman.net/home) is doing a good job of stepping into the shoes of what Glastonbury used to be about, although even that is getting dear now, £135 this year  :(

Looking at Yehuda Moon's list of acts it would seem that Glasto is still a good place to see smaller, more contemporary, and ground-breaking acts.

The main stage needs a "dinosaur" with an extensive back-catalogue to pack it out in the evening but it seems like there's still something for everyone.

Remember your parents saying "this is just a noise" as you watched Top of the pops intently?

I'll leave it at that.

I'm not as old as you lot  :P and I listen to stuff that would be considered worse "noise" than her.

My beef isn't with Beyonce as such, more the decision to have her playing Glastonbury. It's got more of a Radio 1 roadshow (remember them?) feel to it these days, or that god awful T4 on the beach. She could have pulled it off, if she'd had some input herself into her set and decided to tailor it towards the occasion, rather than just performing the exact set she takes out on tour the rest of the year.

Who knows, maybe recently they've got to cater more towards the people who can afford to go hence mainstreaming/dumbing down the acts, rather than just being about great music.

Check out the 1994 line up (!)

Beastie Boys
Spiritualised
Blur
Orbital
Radiohead
Oasis
Pulp
Inspiral Carpets
Bjork
The Pretenders
The Manic Street Peachers
Johnny Cash
Peter Gabriel
Nick Cave
Paul Weller
Elvis Costello
Tindersticks
Tool
Rage Against The Machine
Beck
James
Ride
Saint Etienne
etc

I mean come on, Beyonce? yes she can sing and dance a bit and she's easy on the eye, but please, Glastonbury? I'd take all of the above over her.

Hehe, that made me think of Grandpa Simpson - "I used to be with it, then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with, isn't it and what's it seems weird and scary."

Check out the 1994 line up (!)

The one and only time I went to Glastonbury was in 1992 and there were some pretty mainstream pop acts on the bill that year - Shakespear's Sister and Tom Jones were the big headline acts IIRC. I didn't watch either - too busy watching more interesting stuff instead.

Primal Scream were on the bill that year too. Plus ca change.

Ooh my manager stumbled across Mr Kool and the Gang last night on BBC4 and thoroughly enjoyed it, one hell of a drummer apparently.

Yep KatG were in top form;

I actually like seeing the old dinosaurs and airheads (Bono and Beyonce stand up) headlining; shows just what a pile of shite the rest of the contemporary bands are

(except Mumford and Sons)

I think I was there in 1994. I remember in the early-mid 90s having to choose between things I wanted to see on the main stages. To be fair, some things that were easy to skip but I hope those who went have a similar choice. I'm with grandpa Simpson now and as I'm not buying a ticket can hardly expect Glastonbury to cater to my tastes (which are somewhat radio 6 in nature). But, I'd rather see something that I might not otherwise see than Beyonce which is on our TV now but, frankly, not gripping me.
