We were close, which was great (& loud - wore some ear plugs), but you do sacrifice an overall view of the stage in action as a result, and we did have to queue for a few hours... But it was worth it. Some good friends of ours were high up in the stands and we contacted each other by mobile and then waving like mad things.
I also had a good chat to an agency photographer with D3 and 300mm F2.8 and assorted lens, setting up and standing behind me, other side of the barrier. He told me about the compacts he had for family use, because anything bigger was too much like work...
