Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but FWIW: I've just learnt that the provisional fastest time was 42-hours 26-minutes by Bjorn Lenhard.

I saw this bloke riding on his own near St Martin du Pres.  He looked so un-bothered that I assumed he'd abandoned and was just riding back to Loudeac.  Very curious as to how he managed to slip the determined looking pursuit behind him.

Are you sure that wasn't Slovenian rider Marko Baloh? As he was in the lead for quite some time (at Brest).

afaik, Bjorn was in the lead in brest, with the group entering control when he was leaving

Looks effortless.

This is a lovely little film.  Not sure about CTY's kit (it puts me in mind of the Audax yellow and purple vomit jersey of a few years ago, which is unexpected from the fashion-conscious French) but the riding is captured wonderfully.  The music is good, too, and at about 7' 50" there's a spiky bit that goes perfectly with the lone elliptigon in shot.  Great stuff.

I asked him about feeding...

"“At each control station I need to buy some food ( mainly chocolate croissants and bananas ) and water / cola. I have taken some baguettes with me at the start, but this was limitted to my front case at the bike. I don't know my FTP, as I don't have a powermeter yet.”"

I reckon a lot of the strong riders will be doing 600km or 1000km brevets in 2018 to make sure they get in that A wave next time, I know I will be  :demon:

Most certainly.

Ah, I see. I remember seeing some of those jerseys on the first day. All I need it a bar bag and I'll knock 24 hours off my time :)

I rode with a group of Americans who were all using bar bags. I did note how easily they were able to access all of their stuff on the go, whereas once or twice when I needed something that was stashed in the back I had to stop, retrieve and sprint to rejoin.

Also there's this:

Perhaps more surprising to many, front bags were more aerodynamic than rear ones. A handlebar bag was more aerodynamic than a Carradice saddlebag that extended just slightly beyond the hips of the rider
...I don't know if that only applies to wide saddlebags.

Bar bags are good, till you get a front p**c**re. Then it gets exciting.

Thank you for posting this link, it is one of the best films of PBP I have ever seen, it captures the spirit of the event.    I must admit the weather looks a little better than when I last rode in 2007 but it has rekindled many memories.
Thanks again.

On the first stage I saw a few riders sitting sidesaddle urinating on the go. They hadn't bothered to move to the rear of the pack either.

Why do you think pro team mechanics wash the bikes before they do anything else?

The fastest ever women's time at PBP was assisted by peeing through her shorts, to stay with the lead bunch.

I've spent a few days thinking about how to achieve a faster time, but I think there's lots of other gains to be had before I decided to forgo hedge stops.

I'm surprised that if anyone can cock a leg over the bar, sit side saddle on a bike, balance, no feet on the pedals, control the bike one handed and pee at the same time then they have not been talented spotted by a circus.

Even the tour riders do not do that whilst on the move but just pull up the leg of their shorts whilst on the move.

Yeah, I was looking at zigzags stopped times, and I stopped longer just to use the facilities, and that's before I started using hedges!

I dread to think what my backside would look like if I tried that.

To be fair it wasn't quite full sidesaddle. Both legs were still on the correct side of the top tube.
...talented nevertheless

You could try emulating Oppy (1931 PBP winner) who learnt how to urinate from a fixed wheel bike, which was a distinct advantage during the Bol d'Or paced 24hr race on the velodrome. Apparently a huge cheer went up from the crowd when a shining trail was first observed behind his bike.
