Title: Tan Hill Overnighter 14 December 2018: It's Christmas!!!
Post by: Graeme on 30 July, 2018, 11:29:28 pm
How about thinking about Christmas already? A lock-in in the remotest pub of Great Britain? Snow snow snow? Who knows...
I've got a couple of days off work and fancy organising a Tan Hill Overnighter (https://www.tanhillinn.com/). [clicky]

14th December. It is a Friday.
They have camping. They have rooms.
They have beer. They have food.
I'm committed and I've booked a room.

Who is in?

Expect cycling. Expect COR.
Expect FUN of types I, II, IIIa and IIIb.
Shall we ride together or do we each need to take a completely different route to the top - no sharing routes?

I'll see if I can persuade the current Mrs Socks, in which case we'll use the camper van.  If not I can book a room.  Depending on the weather of course - I'm not a fan of cycling in snow / ice, the only times that I've fallen off (so far) have been in those conditions.

I've just requested annual leave that day, getting in there early before people start organising work Christmas stuff (the reason I didn't make it last year)! ;D

[Edit: and it's been approved, so I'll book my bunk!]

I knew that it wasn't too early to plan Christmas. It's always nice to have something to look forward to, especially now the nights are drawing in.

Tan Hill in December is a bloody stupid idea.  But Christmas is boring, and I've got studded tyres.  I'm seriously considering it, on the understanding that I won't have to wade through anything this time...

Give over man.

Heard someone talking about how Autumn is their favourite season yesterday. I just don't need this kind of negativity in my life.

Good news. :)

Just a heads-up: I'm not making bookings or anything.

If you fancy a bunk room, double bed room, or simply camping near Deano you'll need to contact Tan Hill directly. This event is looking popular and more people seem to be planning a day off work.

Bumpity bump bump... if you think you fancy a Christmas yacf gathering at Tan Hill you ought to get booking, I believe we're starting to fill the place. If you like home comforts you'll need to be quick... or it is camping with the hardcore set.

Bad news and good news...

I can't make the December Shindig  :( But...

The early afternoon of Friday 22nd February could see me in the environs of Tan Hill and I should have until the Sunday morning so that gives me two nights and all of Saturday for mid-winter fun and games.  I know its a way off but is anyone likely to be about?

If there is some interest I will start a new thread to avoid confusion.

Just booked a bunk bed at Tan Hill. I could say the lower load will allow me to have a crack at the times trial, but I’ve just got a bit nesh and am not likely to be be as fit as I’d like tondra and use the camp kit in December... still it’s a commitment!

Looking forward to seeing you all.

I've booked a double room for me and the current Mrs Socks.  We'll have the camper van and bike rack so will have space for a couple of people plus bikes if anyone needs a lift to lower ground.  (Assuming that the weather is OK for us to get there of course).

I've just booked a bunk :)

I was considering bringing the tent and extending my ride home to include a night out,  I'm not so sure that I'll have the time for that now and will likely ride back to Newcastle on Saturday morning.

I don't have anything booked in with work for the 14th yet so I've penciled in a working from home day,  that will allow me to get away after lunch, probably by train to Darlington followed by a ride up via Barnard Castle.

One quick question for those with some local knowledge:  Whats Route 70 like between Barnard Castle and Tan Hill?  I see from the online maps that there is a 2-3 mile stretch of unmade road, how is it?

There's no such thing as a bad road, just Mildly Inappropriate Bikes™.

However, on the grounds that both bad weather and crap lungs are real possibilities in December, I'm erring on the side of caution (and vastly cheaper trains) and taking the Kirkby Stephen approach.  Choice of steed to be made in light of prevailing conditions nearer the time.

I rode up and down it on 28mm gatorskins this summer with no bother. Bone dry mind.

It was the road we rode down in this blog post (http://balancingontwowheels.com/2017/12/winter-adventure-into-the-wilderness/).  Pics from after the inn are of the Sleightholme road, starting at the one with the W2W sign.

Mr Bunbury did it downhill in the ice on 23mm tyres. There's always someone crazier than oneself.

I did it on 35mm tyres last time and it was fine. Much better than I remembered - but the only other time I'd done it was on 25mm tyres a few years ago, and that wasn't fun.

Might be on 43mm tyres this time, if I can't be bothered to switch them! ;D

I've done it on a recumbent with 40mm Marathons and *just* the right amount of co-codamol, back when there was slightly more loose gravel and a not quite as many shark-infested puddles.  It was more fun when I did it on a MTB with 54mm Rocket Ron/Racing Ralph last year, but that might just be because I have a clearer memory of the event...

That road sounds like the way to go then.

I'll probably be on the bent, though it normally wears 559x42 Marathon Supreme's I might fit the 50mm Conti Winters which have been loafing in the loft since Mrs B started commuting on 20" wheels.  Only drawback is there's no room for guards with those tyres.

Oh yes, my problem with Northern is that I could get to York via Darlo, then they'd leave me stranded. Just be easier to roll down the dale.

I'm vaguely looking at routes, too, for the onwards-from-Durham bit (I may well go for the train, but it doesn't harm to make plans!).

Anyone know what the A68 between Bellingham and Jedburgh is like?

I'm not familiar with the A68 North of Bellingham but the section between the A69 and Bellingham is very fast. Not too busy really, just fast, expect overtakes at >70.

I was going to come on either the bent or the Audax Bike, both of which are running Marathon Supreme's.  If its looking particularly frosty I'll use the old Trek MTB, currently shod with 50mm Marathon Dureme's but with a pair of Conti Winters on standby.

Congratulations on making it through Mordor, largely intact.

You know, we refer to that ( *points *) the other side of the hill, as Mordor - largely because there are flames and noises and rumblings, that disturb one's constitution. You will see...*

* If there's an 'incident' at the Olefins plant at Wilton (not uncommon), you can pretty much see the flames here, 10km away.

In light of the weather and train forecasts I've decided that studs are prudent but since I've no intention of taking the wading-through-a-bog COR approach (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=104696.msg2215705#msg2215705), the MTB with Ice Spikers is overkill.  On that basis I've cleaned the worst of the grime off my hybrid[1] to check there's a functional bicycle underneath, and dug out the Marathon Winters.

Main concern at this point is lurgy, which isn't getting better at any kind of speed.  Currently producing prolific amounts of snot and feeling low-level rubbish, but my breathing's okay, so I'm not chickening out yet.  It's not that big a hill, after all.

[1] Which has useful features like 700c wheels, proper mudguards and dynamo lighting.

I’m riding up from Harrogate, hoping to arrive around 1600.

Winter tyres on order, but unlikely to be here in time. More positively, the forecast has ‘improved’ to cold, but with lower probability of precipitation while I expect to be riding. Given the current tyre and weather I’ll bring the dynamo bike I suspect.

Look forward to seeing everyone.

Leave after it warms up, but before the snow starts. Or failing that, I don't fly until Tuesday. Be reet.

Ah, snuck behind Kettlewell Church last night, which was fine, apart from the chimes every hour. And each 15 minutes..but eventually tuned them out.

Lovely, back on the tracks, and my favourite valley of Kingsdale, climbing over to Dent.

But you just had to try that 4th track, didn’t you?  Two miles of bog trotting later in the dark, I bailed it when a SP said another three miles, still having to scramble a mile straight downhill into Dentdale.  Good job I’m in the Howgills bunkhouse, and can deskunk everything for tomorrow ;)

I've gone for the no studs option (but still fat tyres: 43mm!), which probably means it'll snow. Bar Mitts are on though. ;D

I'll be riding up from Oxenholme, as it was the cheapest place I could find a train ticket to this morning when I finally bothered booking. Didn't fancy riding from anywhere north, given the likelihood of a headwind - sojournermike, you should have a lovely wind-assisted ride! I did consider going from Harrogate but it's too much of a faff getting there.

I’d have been glad of the Company. Still undecided on tyres! 28mm with dynamo or 54mm racing Ralph without.

Agree the wind looks helpful up, not so great heading back on Saturday.

I'm sticking with the 40mm studs, on the basis that  a) brakes  and  b) not falling off my bike in the middle of nowhere  beats the possibility of using Brompton tactics to weasel my way onto the replacement bus from Kirkby Stephen on Saturday.  The freezing tailwind can blow me to Penrith.  Hopefully.

Main question is lurgy.  Lungs are working, which is the important thing, but my eyes and throat are sore, and I'm still feeling low-level urgh.  If I get to Mordor Central and feel like death, I won't be getting on the train.

The morning will be fine. It's the afternoon that might be interesting.

Well I'm bailing, because of the weather and the other plans I have. I would be driving in the mist of the worst of that incoming weather front, in high and exposed places in a van without winter tires.

Oh no! Could you get a lift with someone? Not too late is it?
No lift to be had as I'm the driver :)

Metoffice has updated the warning to be amber with ice kicking off at 10am instead of noon yellow with snow/sleet.

If I didn't have other things booked I would have been there and ridden the weather out if it turned out as the warnings says

Getting the WiFi working was almost as challenging as the climb. I'm here (toes not responding but otherwise unscathed) .  Someone's made Deano a Sustrans cake!

Yeah - looks like freezing rain tomorrow, rather than snow. Studs FTW!

Well that was exciting. If you go fast enough the wind chill stops. Then you get blown into the verge.
It's a balmy 2C in Kirkby Stephen, time for a rail replacement bike ride...

2 hours from Tan Hill to Leyburn. Downhill mostly, but headwind and surface worked to keep me slow. Blown onto verge once.

Now sitting in cafe with soup, roll, scone and cream/jam. Waiting for Sue to pick me up. The headwind is coming from Harrogate!

Happy days:)

I’m also sitting in a cafe, in Bishop Auckland, getting some lunch before the final stretch into Durham. Hoping I get there before the snow does!

Now drying out in a cafe in Penrith. Could have done without an hour of freezing rain...

Rumours of snow are greatly exaggerated. *drips*

I made it to Durham before the snow. Apparently it’s due to hit about now, so I’m holed up in a cafe.

The rain started slowly and given the faff of gloves etc I didn't stop to put them on.  This may have been a tactical error.

Peli just saw in farcebook that the roads near Tan Hill is now covered in black ice.

Here at the other end of the Yorkshire Dales, the snow and ice they promised turned into rain and wind, which has given us unstable power, light has blinked a few time, not kicked the pc over, but the router has fallen over a few times.

Why can't we get snow (that could be song to a Cure tune)

When I got to Leyburn the temp was up to -1.5C and the forecast had turned to ‘freezing rain’. Sue collected me, so I’m home and the weather outside is best left on its own. Occasional lights flickering and pavements crunchy with hail.

Quiet night in I think.

Good to see you all last night!

Mike

There were certainly patches of ice of various colours on the way down this morning, although at that point the wind was a greater issue. I expect the addition of any real quantity of wet stuff will have made it properly treacherous.

I'm now on a nice warm Pendolino.

I made it home by five, might have been a bit earlier had I not gone wrong in Durham.  The last 15 miles or so was riding through a rain/sleet combination which is now beginning to settle.

Thanks for a good night all and happy birthday Deano.

Most people now know that the "Christmas Party" was a cover for a super-secret-Deano's-40th-Birthday-party.

Deano's sister had been gathering as many of his non-yacf friends together as possible, lots of VC167 in that too. I'd been charged with gathering as many yacfers as possible. Deano's sis had arranged for the barn to be decorated as it was big enough for everyone to gather, eat and drink. The space was beautiful with a 20' Christmas Tree, fairy lights everywhere and there were pictures of Deano from his childhood pinned up around the walls. A sustrans style cake was baked with BMXs stuck to the top. It was brilliant. Deano's sis had also arranged for live music entertainment.

Cycling to Tan Hill Inn in winter is crazy. Who wouldn't want to give it a go?!? I planned to cycle from Northallerton via Reeth, Muker, Keld etc. With two weeks to go I was beginning to suffer from arthritis in my ankle. It was getting worse. Cycling was okay - but walking was awful. However with two days to go I realised I couldn't head out into the Pennines in winter with an arthritic ankle - so I arranged for a lift with Deano's sister.

I caught a train with separate tickets from Hull to York, to Northallerton, and then to Darlo. I walked across Darlo stopping at an excellent Vegetarian and Vegan cafe called The Health Warehouse. The salad was delicious and filling... then onward to Deano's Mam's (translation: Mum's) house. Deano your Mum is so lovely! Coffee and chat and loads of photos of you and your sisters when you were kids. So cute!

Then into the campervan for the journey to Tan Hill. We arrived just before Deano and sat in the warmth to watch a couple of cyclists trying to set up tents in the cold and wind.

Any chance of a surprise was undermined when Deano rolled up and saw his Mam. Then Lynn and Aidan tried valiantly to pretend they'd come to the pub on a whim. As did Rob. Deano wasn't falling for it. Over the course of the evening more and more cyclists turned up, each to a cheer because it was dark and cold outside. Only one had to be rescued having sought shelter from the cold, and sadly fboab and ChrisS were lost to us. :(

The food and drink and company was just brilliant. I loved renewing friendships and meeting others for the first time. Lovely to listen to iddu describe the 6 day wild camping journey he'd taken to get there.  I also realised that the last time I'd met Phanta was on a Scottish audax from Linlithgow in September 2014... and the last time I met Kim was probably at a camping barn in Teesside goodness knows how long ago. sojournermike and I once did an Easter Arrow together and meeting up again was like meeting an old friend.

Unfortunately the impact of walking through Darlo was getting worse. My ankle felt bad and at about 7pm I headed to my room to see what was happening - I took my shoe off and my foot swelled up like a balloon, throbbing with pain. It was not pleasant and meant my evening was over. However I was able to listen to the band and hear the fun going on downstairs - it wasn't as 'saddo' as it sounds. I was pleased I'd made it, pleased I'd chatted to most people and resigned to ICE my ankle. I'd rather wisely booked a private room so I wasn't camping, I wasn't in a campervan, and I wasn't in a bunk room. I actually had a really comfortable bed but I needed two duvet to stop the shivering (which might have been from the discomfort rather than the cold) and I had several pillows under my foot.

I think the music, singing/bellowing ended about 2am.

I was very glad to be travelling back in the campervan. That weather looked utterly miserable. Cyclists are a crazy breed to want to ride in those conditions. :)

Thank you everyone who came along and to everyone who wanted to come but couldn't. Happy Birthday to Deano and a big thank you to his sister for putting on a fantastic evening.

---

One of the many conversations I had last night was about having another Tan Hill gathering in the summer when it might be nice for more people to camp, when the conditions are less likely to kill us, when more people might be able to come. Tan Hill Inn is really brilliant at the moment - the food is rather good, the beer selection is excellent and the location is jaw-droppingly stunning.

So what date should we go for in Summer? Another Friday/Saturday? July?

And I've just got home too.  Having had plenty of weather on the ride to Penrith, it decided not to bother on the last couple of miles across Birmingham, so just the soggy gloves and mad taxi drivers to worry about.

Reading back over the last couple of days of this thread is like a play in three acts:

Act I: ZOMG sno!  Am I going to need studded tyres?  Or a lift in a campervan?
Act 2: The only way is up (baby)
Act C: Teh weathers haz gone insanz0r!  Half of YACF holed up in geographically diverse cafes.  REMAIN INDOORS.
