Argyll Alps 200km - New event on the 29th June
« on: 18 January, 2019, 02:19:58 pm »
Hi All

Been away from event organising for a few years and have decided to get back to it. This is a new route, just published, which has a short ferry trip at the start and end of the ride hence the earlier start time.

Details on the AUK website http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/19-488/

Cheers
Robert

Tempted, on my "Thinking of Riding" list.

Will need to find my Cheque book; was going to ask about the ferries but then read you'll even include the ticket in the entry fee

Looks interesting (apart from the evil climb up from Glendaruel!).

Entries coming in at a steady pace for this new event with just over 8 weeks to go.

I have managed to secure the church hall for the night before if anyone wishes to bunk down in the hall ( bring your own sleeping kit). For a small fee (~£5) a light breakfast will be provided for those who wish to sleep in the hall the night before.

Any questions about the event then feel free to give me a shout.

What's the bike storage situation at the hall?
Considering taking the train over, which would mean wanting to keep the bike out of reach of the neds overnight.
Bringing the car... well...

No problems with bike storage in the hall, a regular train service from Glasgow central and the station is only a few hundred meters from the hall.

Jim, not sure if I'll need any additional assistance as I'm hoping to get a few of my club members to help out on the day but if I do I'll give you a shout.

Cracking ride, I was fearing the clim from clachan if glendarule but other than a photo stop made it without walking, the thunder was extra atmosphere!

The fast spin to ardentinny also made up well for the ferry time at the start though my decision  to stop for provisions at sandbank on the return saw me reaching hunters Quay just as sound of seil started making waves on the 1840 crossing.
The 1900 was an hour earlier than I'd been targeting though, guess I had time for a big lunch at Millhouse after all rather than the hurried children's menu option.

Even better  the only real rain to hit was while I was crossing the firth

Wow! What a fantastic ride that was, simply stunning.

A great way to start and finish an Audax with a ferry! Very quiet and well surfaced roads, and those views, didn’t get the heat, some rain with a few claps of thunder added to the atmosphere.

Big thanks to the organiser and his mate for manning the “back of the car” controls, also thanks to his family for the great food at the finish. Great to meet many friendly Audaxers.

This event is destined to become a classic

All the admin done now, cards posted off for validation (as this is my first event organisation in a while), when they come back I'll post them out.

Feedback from the riders seems to be fairly positive and I was thankful that no one got caught in the worst of the thunder and lightning on the day.

Likely have this back on next year although I may bring it forward a few weeks to avoid the start of the school holidays in this part of the world.

Thanks to everyone who entered and made all the effort of event organisation worthwhile.

See you next year

Robert

Jealous I couldn’t make it this year! I’ve driven many of those roads when on holiday last year and they are fantastic.

Bringing it forward a couple of weeks next year would ensure my entry!
