Operation "Safe Pass" in South Yorkshire
« on: 09 September, 2017, 11:48:15 am »
After pushing from various local campaigning groups, South Yorkshire Police have been running a "Safe Pass" operation similar to the West Midlands one.

One big difference though. They've been doing it in Uniform.

Officers received no reports of motorists driving too close during that time

Outstanding. Box ticked, sorted.

In the next episode of South Yorkshire PD, PCs Sculder and Mully ponder why when they drive at the speed limit the roads ahead are always empty, yet there's a line of traffic behind.

What next, SYPD declare an end to burglary as no one has ever burgled a police station?

Lynn was taking some photos of me riding yesterday and I gave her a high visibility jacket with long sleeves. She observed her effect on drivers speed with amusement!

When some highway engineers came to look at a difficult junction at our request there was no bad driving.

They were wearing high vis jackets.
It is simpler than it looks.

When I complained to the local school a while back about their feral children, the head teacher followed them down the hill one afternoon. He didn't apparently see any 'untoward behaviour' while he stood there watching them walk by.

I think some people really are that self-aware.

Now I know what to wear for my commute.

Years ago I used to commute along Adelaide Road in Swiss Cottage.
There was a local *ahem* character who would sit on a bench by the roadside in a dark suit with a briefcase on his lap.
On his head was a policeman's helmet, of the sort you can pick up at any tat stall in Trafalgar Square or Piccadilly Circus etc.
His presence seemed to have an effect on passing traffic - a lot of brake lights lighting up suddenly.....

Back in the early 1990s, my dad (with dark suit and briefcase) would point his brickphone at the speeding traffic on his walk to the station, to similar effect.

Those 'polite' hi-viz tops are very common on horse riders around here. Presumably because a lot of drivers don't take the obvious presence of a giant fuck-off horse as a signal to slow down unless they think it's got a cop on top.

Sadly, they make you look like a dick.

Which, in the case of horse riders, segues nicely into the ancient joke of
- What's got four legs and a six foot prick on its back?
- A police horse.

Wasn't there some report that people with those vests got more punishment passes, as some drivers realised they'd been 'tricked' and decided to retaliate? Vaguely recall seeing something about this a while back.

- A police horse.

Very nice.
