Obviously a totally tragic situation - and sadly similar situations are all too frequent.

The wording of the petition does miss what for me is the central point:   sentencing as a whole of offences on the road is lenient - it doesn't reflect the seriousness of the consequences on the victims.

The request seems to be to adjust the sentencing guidelines, available here:

http://sentencingcouncil.judiciary.gov.uk/guidelines/guidelines-to-download.htm

In my view it's the tarriffs for driving offences - the starting point for the sentencing guidelines - that need to be stiffened up.  I believe there is consultation out about this - I remember reading in the CTC magazine about it.  Perhaps someone can enlighten us further?

Check out the recent mathew thompson 2 years ban, no retest and 200 hours community service.
