New here and loving what I see :)
« on: 19 September, 2011, 07:01:43 pm »
Hello, this is my first post here. I can't quite believe this place. It must be where cyclists go when they try other forums and find everyone is into fast and/or far on two wheels with a helmet. No one rides anything a bit different and if you don't wear a helmet and attempt to venture the opinion that there may be evidence indicating that is a reasonable decision, you will be vilified! Here I read that some people enjoy cycling fast and/or far. No doubt some choose to wear a helmet, but some like to ride differently, even on 3 wheels and, shock, horror, is that a sensible, friendly chat about helmets I see?!!! In any event, folk here seem so friendly and open to differences  :)

So, I'm pleased to find you. I finally learned to ride on two wheels last year at he age of 51. Very pleased of course, but I have harboured what seemed like a dirty little secret for years. A wish to have an adult tricycle. I rode one about 6 years ago on holiday in Florida. I hired it for 5 days. It was single speed, riding up hill nearly killed me, but I couldn't get the grin off my face, I loved it so much. I thought I couldn't get one because I 'should' ride a bicycle like a proper grown-up. Then I came across the Tricycle Association. I couldn't believe what I was seeing  ;D I now have a Pashley Picador on order. I know it's no athlete, but neither am I. I just want to tootle around the local park, and cycle tracks locally, including those near the beach and Kielder Water etc. My bicycle is also an old fashioned Pashley. Albeit it has 5 gears to the Picadirs 3!

Welcome to yacf.  We're a very friendly and, dare I say, eccentric lot (well I am anyway).  Hope you enjoy being here.  Looking forward to some pics of the new trike when it arrives.  I must confess to a hankering for a recumbent trike.  Almost bought one a few weeks ago, but funding issues intervened  :'(  - maybe next year

Welcome to the forum! It's a good place to spend time.

I bought a tricycle last year and I can't ride the bloody thing. I still haven't graduated to that extra wheel.

I take it that your mention of Kielder Water implies that you are a Northumberland lass. My wife, myself and three friends are heading that way for a holiday next month (staying in Alnwick).

I sold it to him :)

I still have one I can't ride very well.  I'm massively impressed by anyone who can ride an upright trike with any degree of panache.  Welcome  :)

Welcome!

You'll find that we're a fairly mixed bunch:  Some of us like helmets, some of us like riding fast, some of us like carbon fibre bling, some of us like sleeping in bus shelters halfway up a welsh mountain in the rain, some of us like funny shaped cycles that weigh almost as much as we do, and some of us like pootling along at 9mph stopping at every pub and cafe on the route.  Nearly all of us like CAKE, though.

I now have a Pashley Picador on order.
A long long time ago, I broke my leg while under the influence of that heady mixture of my first 2-wheel short-wheelbase recumbent and 6 pints of Old Speckled Hen.

While my leg was in plaster, I bought a Picador.  It was utterly brilliant for giving me mobility again.  After I was allowed back onto two wheels by the physios, I donated it to the hospital's Occupational Therapy clinic.  Never heard of it again.

YACF collectively is going to design and market a dedicated bike cake holder.  Hope you can help with this, Annie.

Ooh, does a Maximus load carrier/rickshaw count?  I can do one of them no trouble, frequently one handed and hauling up to 100kg (although slowly!). In fact I spent all day at work on one....

LOL! Thanks for the lovely welcome guys  :)

I hope that by learning to ride (after a fashion) on two wheels, I haven't lost the ability to ride on three!

I live in South Tyneside with my partner, dogs and chickens - the latter being very good in triggering the baking of very excellent cakes! So Wowbagger, Northumberland is an easy drive up the road and there is some nice coastline 20 minutes away. Have a great time in Northumberland  :)
