Is this correct punctuation?

You could also substitute 'because' for 'as' but you don't want either of those commas.

Why not just, "I would like to be considered for ..."?

ETA: Or "I wish to apply for.."?

No commas, and cap up the second I.

Personally I wouldn't use "I am writing" though - it's obvious that you are writing - and instead start with "I would like to be considered for" or "Please consider me for."
