Norman Wisdom.
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Norman Wisdom; that's just common sense.

There's a nice story about a debate in the European Parliament, during which the French sentence «Nous avons besoin de la sagesse normande» was simultaneously-translated as "We need Norman Wisdom"... I can't find solid evidence for it on the internet, though in one online Hansard report from the Lords, one peer says it is true because he was there.

Stephen Fry also couldn't do the deliver the lines about Lionel Blair with enough innocence.

I wouldn't think he'd try.  I think it would be a mistake for any of them to try to impersonate Humph.  They should bring their own flavour to the show.

Although, sadly, this could be the end of Samantha, Mrs. Trellis and Sven.

At the risk of making ISIHAC a radio clone of QI, may I suggest Stephen Fry?

[Smug Mode...]

It's just as well they use wireless microphones these days; with rotating chairmen, the flex would just twist up.

Won't they get dizzy?

The sans Humph scenario has troubled me much less than the passing of Mr Rushton. Willie was (IMnotsoveryhumbleopinion) the consummate player. If ISIHAC can survive Willie's passing, it should certainly carry on now.

What's so funny about peace, love and understanding?

I will listen with trepidation. I did love Humph greatly.

Nobody could replace Humph.

But The Show Must Go On and Stephen Fry's the only person who could possibly step into his shoes

Well, and Rob Brydon and...

Apparently, Barry Cryer wanted a woman to take over.  Sam Leith in the Guardian today suggests Victoria Wood.  That would be cool.

Well, Victoria Wood was on the show, which I thought was pretty good. It appears that, after Humph's passing, Barry Cryer will be the butt of the geriatric jokes.

It was strangely unsettling to hear Stephen Fry speaking a Humph-style script.

No.  I'm with Ian.  I thought it a mistake for Fry to try to keep to Humph's script.  It came across a little stilted.

Hopefully he'll develop his own style as time goes by.

Would be better to see a more individual style in my opinion too - Still a very enjoyable show as always though.

Just a tip however  - Don't listen to the show whilst doing lactate threshold training on the turbo, as the resultant laughing will put you into the red fairly quick...

I was away from the wireless-receiving equipophone when this was broadcast to a waiting nation.  So I bow down in awe and gratitude for iPlayer.

Loved it.  Splendid Clement Freud reference.  Hamish and Dougal making a welcome return.  Very much a chock off the old blip.

It's what Humph would have wanted.

I thought Fry played it just right, as a starter. No doubt a "style" will evolve...but it's back and that'll do for now!
Victoria Wood was on top form!

Listened to it on BBC iplayer.

Fry needs a Fry script rather than a Humph script (that's been said, hasn't it?), but otherwise enjoyable.

Stephen Fry seemed to be less of a Humph-alike last night, and was developing his own style a bit more, I thought.

And I like the presence of Victoria Wood.  It's always previously been a bit too much of a Boys' Club.

Listening to it now....I'm regretting it not listening to it for so long (15+ years) but glad it's still going strong. Loved the Slayer cover...and Barry's version of 'Don't Cha' was infinitely better than the original.

It's still the same script writer so I guess everyone is feeling their feet a bit.

This week's made me laugh out loud on several occaisions. I am with StuAff with the Pussycatdolls cover.
