Mobile to internet connections

I have been using my Sony mobile to connect a laptop to the web. I have used bluetooth and the usb cable connection. Both methods have been painfully slow (9kps). Is there a better way?

Also I have been trying to create a vpn connection to work but being refused because of error 778 not possible to verify server. Is there a button I should be ticking / unticking?

If you're using GPRS and only getting 9 kb/s then it must be pretty crummy signal

I can get 124 or so using my phone as a GPRS modem.   If you want decent data rates though, you need 3G
