50s, always stiff ....
« on: 04 October, 2014, 01:54:58 pm »
Oo-err missus ...

No, seriously, me and the fragrant (and long suffering) Mrs FF are both *ahem* physically active and generally healthy 50 y/olds, but notice that we also getting increasingly stiff in our bones ... actually, it's muscle stiffness more than anything else. Not just stiff in an non-mobile way, but painfully stiff, sit down or lie down for say 30 mins and it hurts to get going again.
Mrs FF stretches after every class, so she should be OK (stretching post exercise is not one of my strong points).

Is this normal for our advancing middle age?
Do supplements help (we have a very good diet)?
Should we start making appropriate old person grunting noises when we bend or sit down?

We have considered implementing a 'swear box' to stop ourselves doing this. Don't yield to it.

Maybe try moving limbs individually before you get off seats.
Are you on statins? They don't usually cause serious muscle pain and stiffness, oh no....

This

I remember seeing a Billy Connolly sketch where he made the observation about making "Involuntary noises" as being an inevitable step into middle age.

Fboab just commented that this progresses further to involuntary noises from the other end, as you progress further to old age. Reminds me of my Nanna who would fart in time with her strides up the stairs.

All part of nature's myriad ways to torment us as we get older.

Tendinitis?  Stretching helps, if you can be arsed.

1) Having just turned 50, yes
2) Don't know, don't take them
3) Why not.

I am 56.
I am not particularly stiff or achey most of the time.
Maybe I'm just too weak...

Hell, I'm 67 and the only time I get stiff is if I've hammered my legs the day before.

Gout?
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

"Frozen shoulder" is a rather  painful form of stiffness. I believe the Chinese name for it is something like "50 year old disease".

Apologies if this is just urban myth ...
The worst thing you can do for your health is NOT ride a bike
