Demise of Liquorice Allsorts...
« on: 09 June, 2010, 06:41:49 pm »
We had  packet on the way back from Cornwall - there was a grand total of two pink or blue aniseed jellies, and masses of the horrible brown 'chocolate' flavour 'sandwiches' and boringly plain Bertie Bassatts.   ::-)   If they're trying to save money it'll backfire - cos people will stop buying them...

With random assortments you win some, you lose some. You'd want to sample a good hundred packets or so before coming to any definitive conclusions. I reckon I could manage that (though given the laxative effect of licquorice, it might not be pretty).

I got a packet of wine gums that was ALL black and red ones the other week. I HATE the black and red ones.

Liquorice is  . I nibble the coconut off the big round ones and bin the liquorice.

Does anyone apart from Yorkshire people call liquorice spanish ?
I like a nice Pontifract cake myself.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Next time you're down Ikea, get some salty liquorice fish. That stuff really sorts the men from the boys.

I like a nice Pontefract cake myself.

I'm from Lancashire (so fairly close geographically  ;) ) and I call liquorice "spanish".
I like Pontefract cakes as well.

Salty liquorice is fantastic and dangerously addictive.
I've picked up a taste for it from my travels in Nordic

I had some (Italian, I think - shaped like racing cars) salty liquorice which I bought at one of the Essex Food shows at Cressing Temple Barns.

Absolutely lovely.  Very strong flavour.  My 5 year old loved them too.

I think your pack was an outlier.

Where can you get Pontefract cakes from then? (apart from Pontefract, obviously)

I like the Bassetts Berties.  I agree about the chocolate sandwich ones though, they're rubbish.

I like liquorice Catherine wheels.  :D

I once did a panto sponsored by Bassetts.  Bertie only appeared on the first night (hadn't been in rehearsals), and disrupted an important lighting/sound/pyros/set/flying/lifts cue :o

My old flatmate used to buy it when she went back home to Sweden.  She'd then pop a pile into a bottle of Absolut and leave it to dissolve, then pop it in the freezer.

Salty liquorice flavoured vodka...  :P

My mum was born and raised in Pontefract and I've never heard her call liquorice "Spanish". I shall have to ask her about that.

When I was growing up, a visit to my gran wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Dunhill's factory for a tin of Pontefract cakes.

Of course, the Dunhill's factory is now the Haribo factory.  ::-)

We have a good mini-chain of traditional sweet shops where I live called Sugar Boy. They sell Pontefract cakes, among many other widely forgotten sweet treats.

They're called Spogs, and we sell them on their own. We also get heart spogs and teddy spogs occasionally, but we always have the round ones. More popular than liquorice Allsorts.

No they aren't!  The daft blue and pink ones with no black liquorice on, what a waste of time.  They're the worst.  And I like the chocolate sandwiches, so there  :P

I'll bring this:
Haribo - Super Piratos - 80 Gr. - Nordic House

It says "Not for children" on the package and there's a reason for it.
I've met exactly one British person who didn't spit it out within 10 seconds.
Nordic and Dutch types love it :)
