Steamed treacle sponge...
« on: 25 January, 2015, 10:44:39 pm »
Over Christmas, when in 'The Works', I picked up a bargainous Marcus Wareing's 'How to cook the perfect...'.  So  today attempted my first (yep) steamed golden syrup/black treacle sponge.  I even made a pleated gproof paper cartouche to go over.  Two hours of gentle steaming later...   Really good, with a dose of custard.    :)

Apparently some microwave versions are good?

PS. I googled MW's pudding and it's here int The Wail....

and mine actually looked like this!

Sounds lovely.

Being the ultimate Lazy Cook, I make my syrup sponge in the microwave.

It's rather pallid but quick & easy. When served with Much Custard, partner is a very happy man.

Yes, when M-i-L gives us a plum pudding for Christmas, I normally add a tad of boiling water, and do a series of 1min shots in the microwave, which works quite well, though possibly not quite as moist as long steaming on hob.  So this syrup sponge was a bit of a departure for me.

I always consider that the syrup/treacle sponge is rather a waste of time and effort when the product could be a suet pudding instead, which is, obviously, a vastly superior dish.

I'm banned from making syrup sponge. Last time I ate about half of it in 1 sitting and then spent the next hour wired and grinding my teeth.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.
