Newton Cap Viaduct, the former railway viaduct between Bishop Auckland and Durham:
It has since been converted to carry the A689 out of Bishop. And to think the council wanted to knock it down to build a whole new structure; only a local campaign saved it.
The old (14th century) bridge was clearly not up to A-road traffic, though it is a very fine bridge in itself:
It was built by Bishop Skirlaw, then Bishop of Durham, though it's been extensively renovated since then. I still prefer crossing at the old bridge, for the extra hills, the thrill of visiting
Toronto, and, of course, for the views of the viaduct:
