Mid Sussex Hilly

Last week I sent my Mercian away to be repainted. It has gears.

The remaining bike is a fixer.

Last night I entered the Mid Sussex Hilly.

I foresee I'm going to die horribly an amount of walking in my future.

Quite new to the AAA malarkey but loved the AAAnfractuous 200 where Streatley Hill and Colstrope Lane were muttered about :-)

What are the sections of this to look forward to?

Cob lane, as mentioned above. Ditchling Beacon, the long and relatively gentle climbs in the Ashdown 'Forest'. Watching people on fixed gear contraptions get slower and slower as the miles tick by...

edit: I'm actually doing the Hillier. But I think there is a fair amount of overlap.

Cob Lane is liberally coated with "up".  The climb out of Ardingly Reservoir is also character forming. Early on there's a bit that takes you by surprise, somewhere near Buxted, or at least it did to the bloke in front of me a few years back as I tried to whizz up it after whizzing down towards it and he made a mess of his gear change, causing me to grind to a halt.

(Ditchling Beacon is only on the Hillier)

It is a great ride that I have done a couple of times in the past.

Cobb lane is certainly a challenging little lump (it is, mercifully, fairly short, but very steep).
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

I can recommend a trike for Cob Lane provided the gear is low enough - however slowly you pedal you won't overbalance and fall off. It worked for me. ;D

As per PAC's comments aside from I made do with the Hilly this year - for 2015 I will go for the Hillier now the AAA are getting more appealing. That spicy tomato soup went down a treat too.

Thanks to all who helped out too with the food/organisation  :D

It was nice meeting and having a chat to Ann about the Surrey Secrets routes which I did last week as a perm - a very nice day!

thanks
Jim

Great day awheel cracking warm October day, thanks Martin and team.
Just loved Rocks Lane, full on off rd surface and possibly the most technical lane in all of Sussex. Makes Farthing lane (MJJSM) look like a walk in the park.
Great feast and had to fill my boots there with the bunch, one rode off without refueling and was 1st back, should have rode with us we were on the rivet, thanks John and team.

Absolutely marvelous
Mad Jacks JSM/  Hills and Mills to be continued in 2021

Thanks to Martin, Anne, Paul and John.

Enjoyable ride as usual and some great views to be had from the summit of Ashdown Forest and Ditchling Beacon.

about 30 riders on each ride; space / cards for 20 more in total

NB although both routes share about 60% in common they do part company 3 times so make sure you are following the correct route.

Note to self get a gazebo for the Hot Dog stop rather than using the very nice cricket pavilion  ::-)

I'll be stamping cards at the Arrivee.

I'll have a stack of booking forms for the Annual Reunion with me... :)

Oh just remembered about Cob Lane! I shall enjoy that one!  :o

So steep that Strava has flagged the segment as "dangerous"  ;D

Well, seeing as the Secretary has bagged the glamour job I guess I'll be serving soup again.

I know my place.

Entered!

I think I've annotated the GPX file with the location of the INFO controls for the Hilly event  [and now removed because I think BRT mangled the file].

I route checked both events yesterday the route sheets need no amendment  :)

one thing I will add (and this applies to those following a gps too) is that just after the turn into Fowley Lane at 16.5km there's a vicious little hump appeared, it might cause a problem if a big group all go over it together;

I will put a sign up on the day  :)

Anyone able to advise on how to reach the start by public transport? National rail website says Uckfield is being "served" by a bus replacement service tomorrow so unfortunately that's a non-starter.

You could always ECE it. I'm sure the organiser would be amenable.
