Dilated Cardio Myopathy

Not the greatest start to the New Year.
Mrs Miggins was not feeling too well over Christmas with what appeared to be a flu like cold.
On the 28th she collapsed with a pretty spectacular face plant and with her recent history of her broken neck, I took no chances and called an ambulance.
The paramedics found that her blood pressure was through the floor at 73/41 so they popped her on a saline drip and took her off to Leicester Royal.
12 hours in A&E and a decision was taken to transfer Joyce to Glenfield hospital for further tests.
As a child, Joyce was diagnosed with Wolfe Parkinson White syndrome, a condition which causes palpitations due to an extra electrical pathway in the heart. Twelve years ago, she had the extra pathway ablated which cured the problem.
At Glenfield, Joyce was placed on the Clinical Decisions Unit for further tests and later that day, diagnosed with Pneumonia. During the testing procedures, the doctors were unhappy with the ECG results so she was transferred to the Cardiac HDU.
To cut a long story short, after extensive testing and scans, Joyce has been diagnosed with DCM.
Her heart is only operating at about 50% efficiency.
As one can imagine, this has all come as a huge shock and will take some time to come to terms with but Joyce remains positive.
Today she was fitted with an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) which will look after her heart rhythm and all being well, will be allowed home tomorrow.
Now all I have to do is make sure she slows down and puts herself first for a change.....not an easy task!

Really sorry to see this! I don't know much about DCM and expect Joyce's attendants to be well-informed and helpful.

Lousy start for the New Year, granted!

Hope the treatment minimise her symptoms and Joyce learns to tolerate living within her limited cardiac means.

I'm glad to hear that the NHS stepped up in time and helped.

It sounds life-changing and scary. No doubt serious thinking lies ahead.

Please pass on my best wishes to Joyce, my BIL has a very similar condition and has just about adapted to taking it much easier than he used to.

Joyce is now home, very tired and a little anxious but very pleased to be back in her own bed.

News Update....
Joyce is recovering well and getting stronger each day.
We have had a couple of gentle walks and been out to do some shopping.
She has her first appointment at the "Rythmn Clinic"....sounds like a dance class, in early February. That should give her the opportunity to discuss the level of exercise that she can realistically hope to achieve.
Her condition cannot be cured and may possibly deteriorate further but there is no point in trying to second guess this.
Thanks all for your kind messages of support.
We will keep you posted.

Joyce is pretty cheesed off, having been gradually getting back into exercise, she now has shingles!
She is now on a weeks course of anti viral tablets. >:(
