Creating own map from OSM
« on: 15 December, 2010, 10:00:18 pm »
I've just downloaded GroundTruth and created my first map set for uploading to my Garmin

But on viewing it in Mapsource, all I see is a white vertical rectangle with the text displayed in it:
"map created with cGPSmapper - Your Tool For Creating Maps

I'm obviously doing something wrong!

This is the command I used:

groundtruth makemap -familycode="24" -familyname="Danky" -mapname="JERSEY" -osmfile="c:\Users\dcadden\Downloads\map.osm" -productcode="1" -productname="Jersey"

Clearly, I need to do a lot more reading on this before I'm fully clued up and I *know* what I'm doing, although I'd be grateful for any quick pointers in the mean time!

Is nothing else visible even when zoomed in and detail level turned up?

What about using MapSetToolKit instead?

Any reason for using Groundtruth, and not Mkgmap?

First guess: Groundtruth is dead easy to use.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

I wouldn't say Mkgmap was particularly hard to use. That GroundTruth command in the first post looks of comparable complexity.
Its more that Mkgmap is all free software and cross platform etc, so is much more popular, and you're more likely to find help on how to use it (I could have tried to help). Though Mkgmap may be a bit more complicated if you want to use the maps in MapSource, or generate contours.

Your source path is good?

Every so often I'll get a bad download, so if my map-making scripts make rubbish, waiting until the next day (for a fresh snapshot up at the source) and re-downloading often sorts it.
