Title: Disposal of two (very) old kayaks
Post by: MikeFromLFE on 03 February, 2019, 09:10:21 am
I've got two kayaks on my garage roof, one plastic and one fibreglass - they've not seen use for maybe 20 years, and time has come to get rid.
They are too long to get in the car to take to the tip (no roof rack or straps either). I don't have a suitable bike attachment to drag them the 5 miles to the tip either. They are outside of the dimensions for the council to move as 'large waste'. I'm not keen on cutting them up (fibreglass). Obviously they are of no value to the usual suspects who take fridges etc.
Any thoughts?

Two old kayaks were set on blocks as planters in Llandysul. They look very good when they are in full bloom.
Unfortunately, one of them disappeared during the flood.

Good idea.  They will probably put them to good use:

I'll have a go - I'd dissmised that due to their age and potential deterioration, but strange stuff does sell on there!

Safety glasses, face mask and a jigsaw would be my solution.

Or put them at the front of your house with a notice on "£10 each, enquire within".  Someone will then pinch them.  If you leave them outside with "Please help yourself" they are then perceived as rubbish and will not be taken, but if they are seen to have a value someone will help themselves.

Hmmm, I must check whether my dad still has his 1980s windsurfing stuff hidden behind a hedge.

My (limited) understanding is that fibreglass canoes deteriorate due to $SCIENCE, so after a certain age they're no good. When my Scouts were offered old fibreglass canoes the District canoe bloke said for us to turn down the offer because of this.  I can't remember how old they were though.

I've certainly not seen anyone using a fibreglass canoe in Scouting in decades. I'm no canoe expert though. I do remember building them using moulds, when I was a Scout way back.

typical glass fibre composite deteriorates with heat, UV light, moisture, alkalinity and applied stress.  In the UK this means that if a canoe is dry-stored under cover it will usually last for decades.   However what is certainly the case is that most modern canoes are in a whole different league, being made of tough thermoplastic; they can really take the knocks in a way that GFRP ones just don't.  I'd guess that scout organisers are (probably rightly) worried about getting sued if their equipment isn't the latest thing these days.

In a similar vein to the 'for sale £10 each' suggestion, of course  leaving them locked up with a bike lock attracts thieves too

I was wondering how long this thread would take to get to brexit.
