May I suggest *everyone else* gets a geared bike out, pushes it backwards whilst holding one of the cranks. I think you'll find that it will freewheel rather than ripping your arm off.

Well, fair enough, I haven't actually tried - but you were talking about wheeling it out of a garage...

I'll have to look out for him - he lives near me! if someone rides past my second floor window I'll know who it is.

No, I was talking about wheeling an anally maintained freewheeled bicycle out of the garage!  :P

Maybe I'll get someone to video me wheeling a bike out of said garage  ;)

I'm with, well, everyone else - if you push the bike back, the pedals turn!

Only if the resistance of the freewheel mechanism is greater than that of a pushed backwards drive train.... Maybe *everybody else* uses Shimano   :demon:

I'm fairly sure that (unless your freewheel has a pawl-disconnect system) you can't roll a bike backwards without cranks turning backwards.  If I'm wrong on this I don't understand how I'm able to pedal my bike forwards

No.

It will freewheel if you push it forwards, which is, after all, the whole point of the freewheel mechanism (cranks don't need to turn when the bike goes forwards).  If you wheel it backwards, the cranks will turn backwards.  This is a side effect of the same ratchet/pawl mechanism that allows you to pedal a freewheel equipped bike forwards in the first place.  (Apparently, a Mr Newton just called, wanted to talk about his "third law" or something like that  ;))
You are in a maze of twisty flat droves, all alike.

There is no difference wheeling a bike backwards and freewheeling down a hill. The freewheel mechanism only allows drive in one direction. And that direction is forwards, not backwards.

Next somebody is going to start telling me they can undo a bolt with a socket wrench ::-)

Those wheels must be damned strong, some of the drops he made off of objects are just asking to collapse a wheel!

It's certainly an interesting solution to some of the more bizarre bicycling "facilities", jump over them instead of being forced to cycle around ludicrously convoluted routes!
Actually, it is rocket science.

It gives me an idea for a new audax route.

Don't give up bobb! Come to the freewheel competition tomorrow - I'm sure you can develop some way of freewheeling backwards, even if you have to break something... ;)

I think this evening, I will redesign the freewheel. It may involve a club hammer, a chisel and an old BSO  :P
