MSM and sulfur
« on: 24 July, 2008, 10:11:11 pm »
I have some glucosamine/chrondroitin tablets which also have MSM in them.  I found this on teh interweb:

MSM for joint-pain and arthritis

Quote
Sulfur is essential to good health but is easily destroyed by modern food processing methods resulting in widespread deficiencies.

I'd love to know what these modern food processing methods are!

 ::-)

Wonder how many of the other claims made on that page have any basis in fact?  I think the fact it contains sulfur (sic) is actually true.  The rest...

That web-page layout/font/style just reminded me of the "San Diego is doomed" Gematria/Numerology stuff a while back.

Do all of the Internet Kooks use the same web page design package from Branch-Davidian Software Inc?

Looks like pseudoscience to me.
The Spelling Police have ruled that sulfur is now supposed to be the correct spelling.

I am intrigued that this MSM stuff is odourless; most substances with sulphur in them, especially a sulphydryl (SH) group pong big time! Think H2S or the mercaptans, smelliest substances known!

Various sulphydryl donors are used to protect the liver in cases of paracetamol (acetaminophen) poisoning.

Correct for use in a scientific context? Worldwide or for merkins?

International medical as far as I know.
Approved names for drugs have also changed.

AIUI glutathione depletion is what leads to paracetamol toxicity & liver damage (glutathione being used up in the detoxification of a highly toxic metabolite of paracetamol) but I wouldn't rely on this page to work out whether taking MSM would help in that.  :)

Drug name changes I know of, but I hadn't heard of the sulfur before. Another ph bites the dust.

I certainly wouldn't rely on that page.
Abbreviations should be defined the first time they appear, not well down that page. There seems much bluster but very little actual fact.
I also wouldn't take a paracetamol OD anyway!

I was once on paracetamol max. dose for 5 days.  I think if I'd known of a way to prevent the risk of cumulative dose hepatoxicity (and I'd been aware of that risk) then I'd have done something about it!  :)

Glucosamine is brill though. My dog's stiff joints have been transformed by glucoaminse tablets - so I started taking them too.
I can now catch a ball with my teeth in midair - and keep getting into trouble for mounting the wifes leg.

It's a proper Big Science change. Blame IUPAC.

Reads like pseudoscience and some of the claims are demostrably wrong.

However, it may work.
