I may never want to get back onto a Cycle Speedway bike, but it's still fun to watch...

They do it in Swindon.  The kids ride round the car park to warm up, which is a bit iffy with a freewheel and no brakes.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

on fixed is either going to lock the back wheel up, or hurt...

The local BMX kids seem to manage fine without brakes and freewheel; they jam their foot in between the rear tyre and the seat tube.  This makes quite an impressive skid if you want.
