A big piece of 2x2, some big nails and your old chain. Extra leverage works where smaller chain whips fail.

I use a piece of 1"x4" with the end cut in a slant (so that it rests across multiple teeth of the sprocket.
Works very very well.

I didn't bother, the sprocket teeth dig in to the sawn end perfectly.
