Our front door has a fancy cylinder lock that takes a round key with multiple flanges. We went out yesterday to find that the keyhole has been colonized by a solitary bee, which has laid an egg therein and walled it up.

Fortunately we have a backup mortise lock, as per insurance conditions.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

We had another visit from an enormous bee on Wednesday. It was a different one, cos it had a white tail. But obviously bees like us, and we like them too, although we do prefer to meet them outside rather than as house guests.

And today in an office by the BBC (or it might even be part of the BBC, I'm not sure) they're out with the leaf blowers. Signs of autumn already?

Whitethroats on Thursday morning at Two Tree Island. There had ben reports of a cuckoo at the east end of the island, which is more nature-reservy and less dog-walkery, but by the time I'd been round the west end, the poor old dog was knackered in the heat. I still haven't seen any swallows or martins, which is about as late as it's ever been. I'm sure it's just me not having been to the right places. They are here.

Heard a cuckoo in the Quantocks this afternoon. And saw pied flycatcher, redstart and willow warbler, so the spring migrants have definitely arrived.

A lizard, in Scotland, in April!
Think that's the first time I've seen a lizard in the heathen lands.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

We've now had two bumblebees (one black tailed, one white tailed) and one wasp. And just now the first thunderstorm of the year.

Yesterday, at 5.10pm, I heard a cuckoo. This is the first time in any spring I have heard a cuckoo before seeing a swallow.

I didn't have long to wait. Whilst I was standing listening to the cuckoo, a swallow flew past.

Oh, I also saw a pair of terns. I think they must have had a nest nearby because they were flying around in a rather agitated state. I couldn't tell whether they were arctic of common terns.

Of course you saw them in a pair: one good tern deserves another.

The fountains have been turned on in the Centre. That means it must be officially summer.  ;D

Bugger. I really can't get the hang of this Google Photo mallarkey.

Is this any better? (I can see it, you see. It must be a sharing thing...)

Strangely, the snowdrops are very late around here. Nothing until February and the  main flush right through March.
Whereas some daffodils (only a few) come out for Christmas.
