Lovely, Brian.  You just needed a yellow xantheria to round the colours out!  I love lichens.

Those are fascinating. I didn't realise lichens were so diverse, having always thought of them as being like Rhizocarpon geographicum.

I'm guessing a mooch round Cheddar would be worthwhile, Cudzo - but any woodland or rocky place is going to yield something.  Now is a good time to see the various cladonias with their red fruiting bodies (this kind of lichen is called fructose).  The rhizocarpon types that look like spalshes of paint on rocks or walls are known as crustose and the ones that look like leaves and even trees are foliose.  Have fun!

Those are fascinating. I didn't realise lichens were so diverse,

I photographed some lichen a couple of years ago, and sat down to identify them. As soon as I read that there were some 10,000* varieties in the UK, I gave up.

*or some other similarly large number big enough to discourage me.

The lichen in the Forest of Dean is fruiting nicely.

Found this from a couple of years ago, too late to go back for a close up.

Apparantly the common name for these are "Devils matchsticks". Quite an apt name.

Great lichen pics Pingu!  :)

Any idea what they are, Brian?
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

I think it's called Evernia Prunastri - I hope Brian will correct me if I'm wrong!

Top one I think has Beard Lichen in it, Usnea subfloridana

http://www.lichens.lastdragon.org/Usnea_subfloridana.html

Bottom one I think is Parmelia saxitalis.

Sad to say most of my plant / wildife ID knowledge has gone out the window.  I know postcode-fu though....

When on holiday in the Lakes last month I went for a walk up a hill, one that is private so almost no walkers. It was covered in multi-coloured lichens and mosses, incredibly lovely. Looked like a coral reef. Huge variety of plants, greens, yellows, reds and purples. Wish I had a camera with me.

Two from Sweden

and two from Norway.

One night I pitched my tent on a bed of this stuff. Until it all got crushed, there was a crunchy sound every time I turned over.

This is apparently a lichen (peltigera membranacea) but I'll believe anyone who tells me different.

Nice find, Salvatore!
If/when I get a Proper Macro Lens for my new DSLR, I must try and get some lichen spotting done!
