It's very annoying to find various adds on the browser window from windows10portal.com
Anyone know how to get rid of these please?

Go to your lock screen settings and change from Windows spotlight to picture or slideshow and turn off fun tips / facts as well.

Many many thanks that's worked beautifully.

Where are you seeing the ads? Is it in a web browser, eg Firefox or Google Chrome? Or is it in the operating system itself?

The hint is right there - windows10portal.com
That is NOT a genuine windows site, despite its name, no idea how you found it or have it as a home page (is that what you have? it sounds like it) but it is something that you have done, somewhere, sometime, even if unwitting.
Sites like https://review.easycounter.com/windows10portal.com will help you judge sites if you have any question.
If you have it as home screen, https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+change+home+screen shows how to change
If you have granted the site "push" notification privilege, it depends on the browser you are using, eg, Chrome https://www.google.com/search?q=chrome+stop+browser+notifications
Those are the two most likely options.
ETA - you may have been fooled into allowing notification or allowed by accident by clicking "yes" when a question "aaaaaa site wants to send you notifications, yes or no?"

I had a look at easycounter.com and was a bit concerned by the adverts. <City I’m in> Massage and Free HD Movies online, for example.

To stop adverts in a web browser, use Firefox (or derivatives) with U Block Origin and Noscript addons. Turn off javascript and only allow it when you need it with Noscript.
To stop adverts in Windows 10 itself, there are various settings related to "telemetry". Windows 10 was designed from the ground up to collect user data.
