Adding to OSM

Flushed with the success of finally making my GPS usable I've downloaded some maps from OSM.

Apologies if this has been asked before...

I've noticed that near my parents there are some roads missing. How can I add them?

Is it a matter of taking a track from my GPS and uploading it somewhere? Do I have to tag it to identify the road?

Do I need any software? I'm running OS X if that makes a difference

You need to set up an account so that you can log in, upload your traces and then edit the maps.

Beginners' guide - OpenStreetMap Wiki should help.

I've done exactly that tonight. I prefer the JOSM editor to Potlach for major work, but the simple thing is:
Open JOSM with the GPS file. It nicely colour codes them by speed so if I stop to go over a stile, I don't need to record the place, just look for the red dots.

Download existing route data from OSM.

Draw the roads on, tagging using the presets.

Click upload.

New tracks appear very soon on the site.
