How soon after Brexit will you....
« on: 19 August, 2019, 09:21:55 pm »
Dare to travel to Europe?

I've just booked to go to a conference in Berlin on November 4th.

They'll have had a weekend after Halloween to sort it all out, so it should be just fine?

Put it this way, I've already opened some online dating accounts and I'm getting in touch with every Irishwoman I can find...

Dunno, if I was travelling on the 4th I'd:
change money in advance
arrive a couple of hours earlier than otherwise necessary, allowing for the Undesirables queue
otherwise not worry unless people came up and congratulated me.

Probably just the same as when I was in Poland/Germany/Holland/Belgium/France when we were supposed to leave in March - forced to buy TWO International Driving Permits (at least they're valid until next March)

BUT - will it actually happen this time????

We are cooking up a rail expedition to northern Germany (Lubeck & Rugen) and returning via Warsaw to Paris on the Russian night sleeper next June.
I'm absolutely, completely certain that everything will be perfect in the world by then. Or not.

We’re going to Lourdes the week before Easter, so we’ll probably be away when the next deadline is supposed to happen. What, you don’t think there’ll be another extension?

.......buy something from a Europe-based retailer? A lot of people on here use various EU mail order companies. What will the import tariff be?
Now that the UK has now a limited number of  mail order companies ( Wiggle/Chain Reaction must have a large percentage of total ordering across UK cyclists) how soon will it be that lack of competition plus import tariffs - who makes bike kit in the UK any more? - push the prices up significantly?

The EU has already issued its 'preparedness' directives for no deal, they were done to cover the 12th April deadline and can be found on

   https://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-19-1813_en.htm

However, they are all more or less based on the UK offering reciprocal arrangements, something that is looking less likely by the day with the current BOJO
administration, for example :

-      Visa reciprocity (in the process of final adoption): visa-free travel to the EU for UK nationals if the UK also grants reciprocal and non-discriminatory visa-free travel to all EU citizens.

I believe a similar directive exists for travel that will allow existing agreements to be honoured (ferries, airlines etc) for a few months...

If freedom of movement is abolished on 31/10 (as has been mentioned) - i would imagine the EU will do likewise for Brits = Visa requirement.
My guess is that this is posturing for a forthcoming election...

Alan

It was noted a Several of months ago that the EU was proposing something akin to the electronic travel authorisation used by for eg USAnia and Canuckistan.  So natch the knuckledraggers who inhabit the BTL regions of Heil Online had a feeld field day.

Hmm, reminds me how are those plans for a 'frictionless electronic border' coming along. We must surely be ready to roll out that technology by now?

My parents have a flat in Jerusalem. (Parents' ages total 172)
They plan to spend several autumn weeks there, returning to London on 4 November.
Mum is Danish and fit. She has not applied for Settled Status.
Dad is frail and needs multiple medical supplies and medicines.

What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Electronic my eye. Sure all they need to do is put in a theoretically hard border but make sure it's staffed by people who have family both sides. They can just wave folk through and say nothing, as long as they have the right accent.

"Oh you are Irish, are you?  Just say Augher, Clogher and Aughnacloy for me now, would you?"

A possible Daily Excess headline in the making? If it hasn’t been done to deth by the time your parents try to regain entry of course.

Dad supports Brexit, though was in Jerusalem for the referendum. He reads the Torygraph
Mum never had a vote but was absent.

I do not wish my parents ill.

Any hard border will last about ten minutes before we learn the winner of the race between the Republicans and the Unionists to see who can blow it up first.

Last I looked exit day was during half term. Mrs Dan was going to be away over it, coming back on 1st or 2nd (planned many moons ago). She’s cancelled the bits that were booked, citing massive stress as not being the basis of a decent holiday.

I'd have thought being away and having literal and metaphorical distance would be less stressful. Perspective, being surrounded by people with other preoccupations, not hearing, reading and talking about it 24/7. I'm assuming that away means abroad; another continent would be even better. Non-Anglophone Africa might be good.
