Title: Laptop recommendations again.

My old desktop seems like it is on it's last legs so I am looking to replace it. I am tempted to go for a laptop as I don't spend a lot of time on it and would be handy when moving around home. I have a Vostro of similar spec (although an Intel i5 cpu). It is disappointingly flimsy, and can actually trigger the touchpad if I pick it up one handed on just one side of the machine, it bends so much.

I would recommend you go and fondle one in store if you can.

I use a Lenovo Thinkpad x270 for work, which is nicely robust and can be picked up second hand in good condition from ebay. If I was getting another laptop now, that is what I'd buy rather than the Dell. Just watch out for the specs of the one you're getting if you go that route, as different sellers machines can vary a lot.

I've used windows-OS'd computers nearly all my life but moved full time to Chromebooks 2 years ago. If your technical requirements is just text editing (which you can do through google docs or Office 365), checking emails and so on, then they can handle all the jobs and be battery efficient, maintenance light and cheap all at once.

Basically it's just like having a smartphone but with the form factor, ergonomics and higher performance of an actual computer.

Any Dell Latitude. You can get some fabulously bargainous refurbed ones on that popular auction site. Easy to dismember and repair. Spares plentiful. Drives downloadable from the Dell website. I've got a trusty old E7440 on the desk and it's smaller older cousin as a beater in my rucksack.

Yes, Latitude are great. Vostro, much less so :(
