Title: Bands/singers that you shouldn't like?
Post by: Si on 09 April, 2008, 04:36:35 pm
You know how it is....you might have differing musical tastes to your loved one but you agree to go along to a gig to see someone who you wouldn't normally think about seeing just to keep your loved one company.

Then, shock, horror, you really enjoy the gig  :o

It happened to me last night.....the singer involved was John Barrowman (Torchwood's Capt. Jack).  I've heard bits of his CD and it sounded a little like harmless easy listening,  nothing special, a little Barry Manilow*, middle of the road, nice music for nice people, etc.

But I have to say he was really good, and in concert has an amazingly strong voice.  'Interesting' collection of songs, some of which I'd not been overly keen on before but he did manage to bring them alive.

And how much mincing can one bloke on a stage do?  The sort of audience that I'd expected: many middle aged women and their elderly mothers.  But, a damned good evening.

So, who, if anyone, have you been dragged along to see against your better judgement and ended up liking them?

*oh yes, she's dragged me along to see him too.  Well at least I didn't have to queue for the gent's!

Beautiful South were very good and the lady singer wasn't there which added a different dimension to the songs. Still don't listen to the records though, unlike... James. They were also good and converted me to liking the records. I can even listen to Sit Down every now and then, which was the reason I didn't like them to start with, as I found it really annoying when it was on the radio all the time.

Overblown, pretentious, dated Goth pomp.  But I can't resist...

David Gray. Even my Mum thinks he's boring but I think he's great.

They were great. Classed in the I used to have a great tape of them sadly lost now. I've never heard of John Barrowman.

Sugarbabes - hole in the head (http://youtube.com/watch?v=zumaNotiT7o) is a belting track, even if the singing is a bit ropey.

I know he actually does have credibility in spades, but many people I know would be horrified if they knew I secretly listen to Johnny Cash.

All Saints.  Eternal.

Though I haven't listened to either of those for years.

Katie Melua.

Actually no that has a very good explanation.  :P

Nothing wrong with that. George is extremely talented, and Andy - had a tartan suit.

Phil Colins

Mrs Pcolbeck is a big Genesis/Phil Colins fan and I took her to one of his gigs in Paris a as birthday treat once. Personally I can take or leave Genesis and solo Phil leaves my cold (good drummer though) so I expected that the gig would be a drag for me. Turned out to be one of the best gigs I have been to. Excellent sound, very good backing band and a good showman. Still wouldn't buy any of his records though.

The Damned, only really knew "New Rose" and Cpt Sensi's "Happy Talking", was dragged along to Leeds Uni by an ex, for one of the Xmas tour shows.  What a cool night :)

The first proper album (First and Last and Always) and the EP collection (Some Girls Wander by Mistake) are really good, like a miserable garage band who didn't have room for a drum kit.  After that it all went a bit widescreen.  Loved it when I was 14, though.

Along with... Guns'n'Roses.
Current guilty pleasure: Swedish pop star Robyn, Joy Division rip offs Editors.

I got a slight case of overbombing somewhere, good album

I will admit to owning more than one Avril Lavigne album.  Shoot me now.

Found myself listening to James Morrison the other night.....

It's not James Blunt i suppose.

I've been discussing Editors at work and with friends with people old enough to know 80s music. I don't think they're Joy Division rip offs. I think they're Icicle Works rip offs.

I can only pray that what happened to you last night never happens to me.

For my sins I quite like some old-skool Country and Western (Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash).  They were all part of my parent's collection and so I imagine they are deeply ingrained in me.

All Jazz musicians should be given the simple choice:

1) Death (By Screeching Trumpet preferably)
2) Use your instruments and skills to play Blues.

I love the title track of The Majesty Of The Blues by Wynton Marsalis (that's jazz, btw).

Few other guilty pleasures wot I like:

Toxic - Britney Spears
Freak Like Me - Sugarbabes
various tracks - Robbie Williams
bits of - No Doubt

Got those scrolling thru my iTunes and as there are about 10K tracks there are prolly a few more that i missed.
