Terrible ironist that I am, I have just printed my luggage label in Comic Sans.
Wheras I use chalkboard instead so I can out-pedant the anti-comic sans brigade by pointing out that it isn't comic sans.

Had I known of the existence of this "Chalkboard" of which you speak I might have used that instead but of the three million (approx) fonts on my PC I am aware of:
  • Times New Roman (horrid)
  • Verdana (most often used)
  • Calibri (No amount of swearing at Excel will make it default to anything else)
  • Algerian (Used once on the insert of a Tinariwen compilation CD)
  • Comic Sans (the Typeface of Champions)
All the others are just Windows-dressing.

"Easier for dyslexics" my sainted arse.  Anyone who fails to recognize the Google logo, serifs or not, isn't dyslexic but blind.  Google regularly replace the letters with pictures to mark some event in the calendar and I haven't heard anyone complaining about legibility there.

The old font was prettier, whatever it was. The new one looks like Baby Lego. Marketing's fell hand.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

ISTR Mr. Zilla saying similar about moronBay a while back. Same marketing consultants?

The fonts that should be shot are the ones where 1, l and I all look the same. It is a pain teaching programming with students who have trouble telling the difference between l and 1

We have guest ID's and passwords for the office wifi. And yes, they use a font that makes I and l look the same.

They're talking about the readability of large bodies of text rather than logos. Coca Cola isn't particularly legible in the eponymous logo but there's no doubt as to what it is. Regarding readility, comparing sans and serif is a bit pointless, you can't really group them like that. Personally, I couldn't read a novel in Helvetica without my eyes screaming for mercy. The Caecilia used by older Kindles is very readable but ugly, Bookerly is a lot nicer.

San Serifs are all the marketing rage now, but the tide comes and goes, eventually they'll look dated.

But Jah love I an' l, so that's alright.

This whole espisode is another sorry tale of corporate might oppressing the righteous lover of beauty and truth. I issue an appeal to our brothers and sisters in letters; typographers of the world, unite! Arise, fontisti! And sing:

I shot the serif (but I did not write in Comic Sans)
I shot the serif (but I swear it was for literacy)

Serif Sans Black always hurt my eyes,
For what, I don't know
Every time I try to read
He said, Blind him before he grows bold

I shot the serif (but I did not write in Comic Sans)
I shot the serif (but I swear it was for literacy)
Riding a concrete path through the nebulous and chaotic future.

Andale Mono.  Which also, helpfully, makes 0 (numeral) and O (letter) easily distinguishable by putting a little dot in 0 (zero) to (sort of) echo the old zero with a diagonal stroke through it.  It's also mono-spaced. Which I like.

This is only really a problem (outside of IT courses, anyway!) where idiot_coworkers setup shared passwords that switch 'o's fo zeroes, and 'l's for 1s. I have never met anything MORE guaranteed to cause needless confusion
