Title: Songs you always sing the wrong words to...
Post by: Legs on 27 February, 2018, 11:44:33 am
Not quite misheard lyrics - this is for the songs where you know full well what the real lyrics are, but just sing the wrong ones for sh1ts/giggles/smuttiness...

Whole Again - Atomic Kitten
You can make me whole again
You can fill my hole again

Handy Man - Jimmy Jones (or James Taylor)
I'm not the kind that uses pencil or rule/I'm handy with the love and I'm no fool
I'm not the kind that uses pencil or rule/I'm handy with my loving tool

We Built This City - Starship
We built this city on rock and roll
We built this city on sausage rolls

Abilene, Abilene,
Sweetest town I ever seen...

There are also a few songs where I only remember the parodies.  Can't remember any just now.

Weirdly my mind's gone completely blank, but there should be an entire category for that childhood sport of augmenting instrumental TV themes with de-facto lyrics by the simple means of repeatedly singing the name of the programme in a vague attempt to fit the tune.

That's like the one in Dublin:

I can see Clery's now, the crane has gone

- following renovations.

A chum used to sing "Rock of Ages" with the first word changed to something anatomical and rude. The rest of the verse fell nicely into context.

Back to the days of working in theatre (Based on a true story)...

Summertime, and the rigging is easy
Sparks are jumping, and the Crew Boss is high
Your Director's rich, and your Chief ain't good looking
So hush, little techy, don't you cry

One of these mornings
You're gonna rig up singing
Spread your spansets
And reach for the sky(hook)
But till that morning
You'll have to risk dodgy wiring
So hush, little techy
Shut up.....and die.

The first time I heard....

Arianda Grande No More Tears

I thought the opening lines were....

Don't go singing Die Fledermaus
I'm not cleaning your daughter's house.

(don't ask!!!) although to my defence, or not as the case may be when my boss started wittering on about Arianda Grande a couple of years ago (apropos to his research) I thought he was talking about coffee.

I also thought Catch Feels was catch fish!!

Not quite in the original sense, but when a song uses the word "eyes" it can be educational to substitute "nose", e.g.

When I look into your nose
I see my destiny.

...

Can't take my nose off you.

Etc. Other organs may also yield interesting results. Or not.

80s ears combined with 80s audio equipment is the misheard lyrics gift that keeps on giving.  Anyway, I was reminded of this earlier for some reason (likely a passing car), looked up the proper lyrics, and decided that mine were better.

I'm staring at the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
No moustache, and his clothes kind of shimmer
If you want to make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself in the mirror

Correct. Hang On Sloopy was a hit for The McCoys in 1965 - it was actually a cover of a song originally called My Girl Sloopy, recorded by The Vibrations in 1964.

So many tangled songs in so few posts! Not only is it "Hang on Sloopy" rather than "Come on Sloopy" (let alone Snoopy), it's "Come on Eileen" not "Irene".  ;)

Still leaves me wondering where the name "Sloopy" came from.

So many tangled songs in so few posts! Not only is it "Hang on Sloopy" rather than "Come on Sloopy" (let alone Snoopy), it's "Come on Eileen" not "Irene".  ;)

Still leaves me wondering where the name "Sloopy" came from.

Lyric fades out with, "Hang on Sloopy, (Come on, Come on)"......

Thank you for clarifying. I did say I'd obviously misheard it.

Steubenville, Ohio, apparently.

That's a wonderful state resolution! Not because of the song, but because how many state resolutions contain phrases like "that old chestnut", "by golly", "a bunch of long-haired, crazy kids", and "just go ahead and pass the darn thing"?

I have just learned that the chorus of "Thumb" by Kyuss is actually the line:
Quote
You're living in thought so
repeated three times rather than "You live in a foxhole" or even "You're livin' in Vauxhall"

I got caught out on Sunday with a hymn I know well "How deep the Father's love for us" that had been altered slightly to remove the gender bias of "Fathers" and "Sons".

"When I called you last night from Tesco's".   (Abba - Super Trouper)

Just looked this up, and I read that it's supposed to be "from Glasgow".  Surely some mistake?  Have a listen and tell me I'm right . . .

Super Trouper recalls Abba's early days when one of the band members worked as a supermarket delivery driver to make ends meet:

I was picking nearly everything
When I called you last night from Tesco
All I do is ring and ring and ring
Wishing every door was as fast, so.

Not exactly a song I sing the wrong words to, more some words I sing to the tune of the wrong song; when I fire up the weather app on my phone and it says "Finding your location" I always sing this in my mind to the tune of "Losing my religion".

"Fascination" by Alphabeat is now and always has been "Vaccination", since waaaay before Covid.

"You pull the trigger on my Spud Gun" always seemed a bit off piste for Kiss, but it's quite memorable, for all that.

And of course, as Bon Scott once hungrily opined, "It's a long way to the shop, if you wanna sausage roll".

Yesterday DJ Random played Janis Joplin singing "Me & Bobby McGee".  I'm afraid I substituted the word "sell" for "lose" in the line "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to...", because of Billy Bragg's "Marching Song Of The Covert Battalions".

And when Janis sings “In all kinds of weather…” then, thanks to the Bonzos, the next line is “We'll rhino together”, while the whole song is now “Me & Bradley McGee” following an anecdote from TV's Super D Millar during this year’s Tour.

National Anthem:-

Just been to our village Remembrance Day parade.  Fabulous turnout and great music from our local brass band (we are lucky to have a "top section" outfit).  I made an almost imperceptible change to the first two lines of a verse (my change comes second each time);-

"Thy/Her choicest gifts in store
On Her/Us be pleased to pour"

I say "imperceptible" - but it was noticed (and appreciated) by some!

Occurs to me that this must the one of the earliest examples of the deadly "in store".

In the warm hold of your loving mind

Just this minute found out that the words to Psycho Killer that I've always heard as Realisant mon espoir, je me lance vers tes bras, are actually Realisant mon espoir, je me lance vers la gloire.

Which is more in keeping. But hey it's never too late to catch up and it hasn't even been 40 years since I first heard it.

As I slogged up Charlaw Fell this morning I was deeply concerned that the funk-soul-classic lady singing was in misery, the refrain over the cheery brass section being a reiteration that 'I don't wanna di-ie'.

I've just looked it up.
