On my ride in this morning:

This fellow had gone to some lengths to park here.   He's managed to get a surprising distance into the moorland, considering it's not a 4x4.

There's a perfectly good car-park just half a mile further on up the hill  ;D

I'm not sure that was entirely intentional. On the CoM?

I suspect not, given that it had rolled a couple of times.
I did stop to make sure there was no-one in or around it.
Yes, the CoM.

He does have a point. The junction in question has very poor sightlines. The police estimate their vehicle entered the junction at between 30-40mph.

This is the view from where the van driver was emerging. The police car would be approaching from the right.

The lights are also green long enough to let three cars through. The walls also act as quite effective sound baffles. You'd see the first car has stopped and not see anything coming fast round the outside.

He may well have a very good point, I'd just rather he simply mentioned the sight lines, dampened sound, speed, etc, without any contradictory disclaimer. I think it would do him better as well, because as it is he's made it sound like a weak excuse.

His story has been rewritten by journalists and sub-editors. Give him some benefit of the doubt. (I have actually spoken to him).

Fair enough! I thought it was a direct quote from him, but as you say allowance should be made for context, shock of the moment, journalistic mangling, etc. No quote from the police driver though!

More importantly, I've only just noticed you got your photo in the paper.

That's a Skoda Rapid, and the one next to it seems to be a Skoda Felicia, so it could be the Czech Republic, most likely.

How on earth they got out of the Rapid I don't know.

Maybe they crawled out of the windows, Dukes of Hazard style - or maybe they didn't park there but neglected to put the hand brake on (I've noticed a lot of people don't bother) and someone pushed the parked car in there, Brazilian parking-urchin style, for a laugh.

That was my thinking.

Btw, we had a Rapid.  Kewl car, and sportier than you might imagine for something based on an Estelle.  Bit alarming when the gear lever jumped after you selected fifth gear, but it didn't actually jump out of gear.  It was something to do with tacking an extra gear on a four-speed box without really re-engineering it.

Oh - and it was nice to have something heavy in the boot (front) when driving in a crosswind.

The engine in the back probably saved Our Kid's life when a Jewson's lorry piled into the back of the poor little Skoda.  That engine took the blow, and pushed down rather than forward.

Weren't those rear-engined Skodas distantly related to the Porsche 911? And therefore also the VW Beetle!

They used to say that you could get all Teh Fear of driving a 911 from a rear-engined Skoda without the huge repair bills when you went through a hedge backwards but AFAIK they weren't related.

The road has a gate across it, but spaces on either side to allow cyclists through (note the stencilled bicycle partially visible under the van).  But some drivers are just too important...

You'll see the above every evening and on weekends (haven't been this way in the mornings yet).  Wonder if I should bother finding someone to moan at.

Went that way this morning - could have taken the same picture.

Was thinking an A5 sheet with council logo and something along the lines of "Please move your vehicle or it will be towed."

From Sardinia. In Italian but I'm sure you'll get the message.

This cycle lane I gather cost a cool half a million euros - I'm hoping none of that is Euro development money.

The local mayor/council head honcho  has assured drivers/shopkeepers that they can still park in it, that it won't become mandatory until it is linked up to other schemes (I don't think he named them) and has been thoroughly tested (by folk parking in it, led by the police presumably) - I think he is thinking of this testing taking several years.

Oh, and parts of it will only be operative on public holidays.

As I understand it, parking in an advisory cycle lane in the absence of yellow lines, is not unlawful.
