Jupiter looks wonderful tonight
« on: 24 September, 2010, 11:04:54 pm »
We've been out with the binoculars and the spotting scope. I can see three of Jupiter's moons in a trail to the left. With the spotting scope we can even see Uranus. Bloody marvellous!

We can't get that level of detail. Great seeing the moons with birdwatching kit though.

Mm. Disappointing.  I was expecting a thread containing cold war spy passphrases.  Turns out you really were talking about Jupiter.

No you can't! For one thing I wasn't in range and for another I stayed fully clothed the whole time.
You are in a maze of twisty flat droves, all alike.

We've only got feeble binos her, but I reckon I saw the 3 moons on Sun evening. Just.

They were almost perfectly horizontal i.e. aligned with the horizon. Does that sound right?

Yes but there are more than three. Should be at least 4 visible to the bino eye.
It is simpler than it looks.

The boy and I counted 4 when we got the reflecter on it a couple of nights ago.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

I have no recollection of ever looking at Jupiter's moons or starting this thread. As for Oaky's anus...

Must drag out the old Meade ETX-90 and see if I can get a camera onto it*.  Dunno if we've got the requisite batteries, though - it eats them by the half-dozen.

Got the Moon and Jupiter last night.

On a full size one you can just make out the cloud bands on Jupiter. I couldn't be bothered to set exposure for its moons, but they were visible using a teleconverter.

It is simpler than it looks.

Yes but there are more than three. Should be at least 4 visible to the bino eye.

Sometimes they are either behind Jupiter or directly in front in which case not visible. When I was a lad I plotted the position of the Galilean satellites over a week or two or maybe a month, it was a very long time ago.
