Equipment used: Skinner moth trap with UV Blacklight (catches moths unharmed, which are then released later in the day)
Photos taken using Pentax K100D, with 18-55mm kit lens, +2 and +4 close up lenses and MeiKe LED Macro Ring Flash.
Not terribly sharp photos, need to practice more with macro!

Nice photos, btw. Thanks for telling us your set up. I got some auto extension tubes yesterday, so will be doing some close up soon (though probably not moths).

**Note to self. Need a better invertebrate macro setup. I've been using Pentax K100D with 18-55mm kit lens, Kood 4x close up filter, and an ebay special macro led ring flash. Think the weak part is the lens with close up filter.....

I have el-cheapo Ebay non auto extension tubes, so aperture & focus not passed onto lens from camera. This means if I were to use my kit lens on them, the aperture would shut down to something like f22.... :(

This gives off a UV Blacklight which attracts the moths.
I got given the wooden box for the base by a fellow moth enthusiast, and I bought the electrics myself:

The other alternative is to use a 125W mercury vapour bulb - not particularly neighbour friendly though...

The trap electrics I bought came with a Sylvania 15W T8 UV Blacklight 350nm tube.
It will be interesting to see if you could get LEDs which would work, as I'm thinking about fettling a portable trap which runs off batteries. LEDs would mean less power required compared to a uv tube.

Thats an interesting question David. I'm not entirely sure, except the blurb which came with the trap electrics & bulb said to avoid looking at the light, and minimise skin exposure when on..... :o
The other type of moth traps use mercury vapour bulbs, typically 125W and above, which again, emit UV light, as well as lots of white light in a neighbour annoying wattage (hence my opting for a actinic tube in my trap which I use in my back garden)
I'm certainly interested to see how you get on, as a LED based portable trap may be quite convenient if I ever try trapping in some local woods....

Funny how I should stumble across this thread after I was taking piccies of moths the other night, for no other reason that I could ;-)
No idea about species etc., but both of these were taken inside my home office - since I tend to work with the lights off and the windows open, I tend to get a lot of fluttery things during the summer and they do seem particularly keen on the glow from my monitors.

I could do with some advice about moving moths. Even if the advice is - don't.
We get quite a few coming into work at night as we've got all the doors and shutters open to keep cool and I'm guessing that they don't make their way out again.
I'm also guessing that if I chuck them out, they'll just come back in again anyway.
Not sure what's best to do but I don't like doing nothing (unless I know it's for the best), if you see what I mean?

Sadly I haven't managed to have a camera to hand, but we've been getting plenty of visits from Jersey Tiger Moths this summer - we've seen a few in previous years but this sumemr they seem to be here in bigger numbers than ever. They're real glamour moths.

I have a few moth books. The one I use for quick references is the Concise Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland by Martin Townsend & Paul Waring. £12.95 on yon tree forest site.
If I need more detail, then I consult a rather more weighty tome, the Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britian and Ireland, by the same authors, £29.95. This book is a bit more scentific, goes into more detail including larva stage.
My third book, which deals solely in Micro moths is the Field Guide to the Micro-Moths of Great Britain and Ireland by Phil Sterling and Mark Parsons.
For a beginning mother, I'd recommend the concise guide as it isn't too technical. :)

Pingu, is that in mainland Europe? The clubbed antennae suggest it may be a butterfly; there is the odd one that rests with its wings like a moth. The colour suggests a tiger moth but its not one I've seen and the santennae look huge.

I think the top one might be a Large White (https://www.britishbutterflies.co.uk/species-info.asp?vernacular=Large%20White); the next one down looks like it's a Marbled White (https://www.britishbutterflies.co.uk/species-info.asp?vernacular=Marbled%20White). The bottom one looks like a Small Heath or a Meadow Brown; the one above with the ragged wings looks like a Comma.

Re Devid Martin's photos, 1: small white (the large white has much blacker markings and is ... larger); 2 marbled white (I think. Not familiar with this species) 3 - red admiral; 4 - peacock; 5 - no idea, but it isn't a comma. The ragged edges of its wings have been caused by damage, not design. 5 - clouded yellow, I think. One source I checked said it is mostly confined to the south, but another said it can be found all over the UK, mostly close to the coasts. My guess is that with climate change, all bets are off with regard to migratory species like this.
