Quel vélo est ce?
« on: 22 July, 2019, 05:02:24 pm »
Visiting some friends in La Belle France at the weekend, I spied this propped up against a barn:

Here's the head tube close up:

I can't quite make out the name. Favor-something, from Clermont Ferrand.  Anyone know any more?

Heard of them vaguely, wouldn't claim to know anything.

There were a lot of these small regional makes in France, a lot disappeared in the 60's (along with the tough times for the french motorcycle industry). I don't know anything about Favor but I think they had a pro team, the name seems to ring a bell somewhere.

You have to be logged into the Great Satan, 2nd class.

Hmm. That's puzzling.  They're hosted on my Google Photos account, but in a shared album, so you shouldn't have to log in.

Hmm again. Pretending I'm logged out means I can't see them.

Not using Google Chrome and not logged into a Google account but I can see them.  ???

Anyway, it's a very rusty bike.

Thanks anyway, to those that could see the pics and added some information.  I feel it needs more than a rub down with an oily rag.

I could see them but now I can't.

thing1 appears to have the answer on another thread:

Yah it was full of lh3.googleusercontent.com links with embedded access tokens that probably expired after 13 hours, sorry about that.
(Trivia: 'LH' in that URL stands for Lighthouse, a name that has outlasted several names of products built off it)

So that's the why. What's the fix?  And is Joth to blame for it all?

Not sure it's the same problem: I can still see Tim's photos, I could never see Joth's.

I can see them through the link, but still not on the original post. Back to your original question, Je n'en ai aucune idée!

The bottom bracket is interesting. The outer bearing seems to be in the cranks, so must require some preload. The left crank is missing, so BB problems may have ended its life.

I had a Magnat Debon go through my hands once with a similar looking bb arrangement. No it isn't an external bearing, the big external cup is actually bearing on the outside of the shell to lock the cup in place (or so I remember it). This Magnat Debon was owned by Terrot and possibly already bought out by Peugeot so the bb setup here might be a Peugeot patent from the late 50's. I dumped the Magnat Debon 'cos I couldn't get much of it apart and the hub brakes were crap. That and I got my hands on a Royal Vedette, which was a Limoges make made in Chalus so much more interesting. That bb setup doesn't seem to have been that common, all the other bikes of about that age that I have seen have orthodox bbs.

I think the answer is to not use google as a free image hosting service.
There's generally about half the (potential) audience can't see them

That didn't used to be the case*.  Has something changed at Google Photos?

*either that or people didn't complain before.

You've got to work on the assumption that 9 out of 10 people will just move on rather than complaining. There's usually no shortage of "me too" when someone does complain.
I got as far as setting up a "this is all I see" image (which is the case in your original post) for use on those few occasions when I did grumble.

It certainly seems to be the case that it's almost always google images that aren't visible to other people. I'd suspect that google are continually changing things, but I use dropbox so I wouldn't know.

As an example of an image that not everyone can see, that one ^^^ works pretty well.

Drifing off topic...

Andrew, can you share your incantation for displaying dropbox hosted images? I've put some photos onto my dropbox account, but can't get them to show yet.  Thanks
