Rondom Luxembourg 1000 - Thurs 10 Aug 2017
« on: 26 July, 2017, 04:56:07 pm »
Is anyone else in for this x-rated 1,000 organised by Maastricht Randonneurs?

Start/finish is at Stayokay YH in Maastricht. Entry is E32 at www.randonneurs.nl/event/brm-1000-maastricht-nl-2/. The route takes us from into Belgium, France, Germany and Netherlands. Total climb is 9,500m. The route looks great, especially if you like rivers. There are plenty of hotels en route and it looks like there are plenty of good bivvi spots too.

Enquiries to Maastricht@randonneurs.nl

I'm doing this.
I'm on the last Eurostar on Wednesday 9th. Planning to sleep in liege and ride down in the morning.

I participated the inaugural event last year. You can see my photo's at: https://fotoalbum.dds.nl/ivo_m/brm1000maastricht2016?DDS=k4etohod8jelnu423qdhqm1eo1
Large chunks of the route are based on the old Maastricht 400 and 600k routes. Last time I rode it x-rated style, sleeping in a bivy bag by the roadside. Some other riders opted for the more luxury approach of sleeping in hotels.
This time I won't be riding but I'll quite likely assist at start and finish.

Wycombewheeler - excellent. Good to have another YACFer along for the ride. I'm staying at the hostel on Weds night.
Ivo - thanks very much for the photos and the Strava link. I'll examine it in more detail at the weekend. I hope to see you at start or finish.
Mattc - it does look nice (looking at Ivo's album)

Last bit of planning to do - looking for late night food options in France. Always a joy!

Indeed I'm hoping to reach Verdun at about midnight on day 1. Not confident of finding anything. Last time I was riding in France we were finished each day by 7. So no problem.

Can anyone advise on any legal night riding requirements in France and Germany? I know I need a hi viz in France anything else I must do or must not do?

Hi Viz in France, lights in non flashing mode in most countries.

That does look like a nice ride, do they do it every year?

As it's x-rated, do you know if is a notion of perm for these sort of things - would make a nice group perm i think :)

If they dont there's nothing to stop you doing a diy with your local organiser.

The route is not very suitable as a perm with advisory route, it follows a lot of winding rivervalleys.

The plans are to have it on each year as an event.

If I can sort my bike comfort issues, and get some fitness, I'll see you there next year :)

Hmm. This would fit with my plans for next year. Thanks for highlighting this.
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

I'm out - I have been unwell with a bad cold for a couple of days with no sign of improvement yet. I couldn't ride my bike to the shops at the moment, let alone ride this. It's rotten timing.

Best of luck, Wycombewheeler - go well.

A small band of riders set out in the drizzle, including Wycombewheeler. Riders were a mixed group of experienced audaxers and newbies, coming from the Netherlands, UK and Germany.
Before the start we observed a minute of silence for the Dutch randonneur who was killed in the opening day of the TCR.

Day 1 made it to verdun at about 1am. Think we must have climbed every hill in Belgium.

BUT between them lots of cycle paths by various rivers and canals. If you like quality traffic free tarmac beside the water then this ride is definitely for you. Sign up next year.

So hard day 2 didn't make it to hotel. Light gave out at the top of the hills. Luckily there was an audax hotel nearby. (A first for me) also lucky I had packed emergency survival blanket with first aid kit. Started just as the sky was lightening and full dawn by the fast downhill still only had 10 mins spare at .mehring.

Of the 8 riders starting on thursday 4 made it back to the finish well inside the time limit. Jos (the organiser) did ride it earlier on, so 5 finishers on 9 riders in total.
