Using laptop as Wifi hotspot
« on: 02 August, 2017, 01:07:23 pm »
We're off to a cottage which has ethernet cable only broadband, so I was wondering if it is straight forward to use a laptop as a hotspot, and is it not secure?

Personally I'd use a wireless AP instead. Something like this: http://tinyurl.com/yb5msrjf (just an example)
Then you can switch your laptop off without annoying other users and leave the little box doing its thing.

Ok thanks, good point.  We actually have one of these already for extending home wifi - which I guess would work(?)

If you use your home wifi extender you'll need to take both parts as (unless yours is different from mine) the base unit doesn't broadcast wifi.

Also take an Ethernet cable, just in case there isn't one there
