intel management engine interface driver - eh?

Anyone know what the "intel management engine interface driver" is all about?  Google doesn't seem to shed much light.  My Dell wants to update it.

It's the magic portion of the CPU that gives Intel (and other three letter agencies) unfettered access to your machine remotely.

Thanks.  Was this what was supposed to be a potential security risk, where patches were to cause a decrease in processor speeds?

No. That's Spectre and Meltdown. The Intel thing is a private cut down Unix like OS that runs on a dedicated separate processor in your cpu that is used for managing the CPU and other system (below bios level) stuff.
