OK, I am now VERY happy with VeloHero. Here is the email communication I had with the developer (he first responded two hours after my email through the contact form and this was all in one day...)

Hi there,

I have just joined VeloHero as my current service (mycyclinglog.com) is very flaky at times and the developer does not respond to questions.

I have uploaded all my rides from this year - 30ish was not too bad and I still had the GPXes - but I would love to be able to import, in bulk from my spreadsheet, my previous years' rides. This amounts to 83,000km in six years, so you can see there is no way I can do this manually (2,500ish lines). Is this likely to be a feature in the near future?

My Velo Hero user name is Auntie_Helen

Thanks!

Please wait a bit. I am developing an Excel macro. So you can import all sums of your workout. When I'm done I post a message on Facebook and Twitter.

With sporty regards
Nils

This is very good news, thank you for responding so quickly!

In the appendix you will find a small Excel tool. You can use it to import your old data.

Nils
(by 'Appendix' he meant attachment, he is German. The attachment was with the email)

Thanks for this, but it looks as though it does not include Training Type and Equipment (I know there can be multiple equipment fields so that might be complex, although I only use one per entry) or sport (I am riding both Velomobile and Cycle). Is it too difficult to add these to the import as it would be too big a job to do manually.

My data spreadsheet has about 2,200 rows. You say not to add too many workouts at once - how many are too many?

Thanks again!

Helen

and then about two hours later he had incorporated four additional fields into the spreadsheet macro thingie for the upload...

In the appendix you will find a version with sports, etc. I would start with 20 and then increased to 100.

Regards
Nils

Thanks for responding again Nils.

I have had a look and thought I had everything right for a sample of 10 rides but unfortunately my version of Excel (for Mac) has stripped out the Macros at some point. I will have another look tomorrow when my brain is functioning better!

Thanks again - it's great to see you are working to help people using your site.

I'm not sure if it works with Excel on Mac OS X. I believe Excel for Mac can not use macros. Maybe you can find a PC with Excel.

I'll borrow a PC to do it in due course, but I was amazed that he was responding so quickly and actually solving my problems all within the space of a day.

The site is great so I very much recommend it. I'll be logging in both places for the time being (for the ticker) but I guess I will probably rely more on VeloHero in the long term as the developer is actually interested in communicating. Cost for the Pro version is 20 Euros per year which is very reasonable.

Have just noticed that the YACF ticker/tracker has disappeared from my "signature". I still have the link - http://locksrandomwebservices.appspot.com/MyCyclingLogProgress?user=Slope&gid=598&goal=10000&units=mi (surrounded by the square img brackets stuff) pasted onto the "signature" pane on my profile.

Any suggestions as to why it might have fallen off?

It went months ago! Not sure what occurred, but it's no longer available.

You could use this one
Code: [Select]

Obviously replace paulf_yacf with your mycyclinglogs userid

... I'll be logging in both places for the time being (for the ticker) ...

I had a brief look at it, and I'm not sure if there's any mechanism (or even better, an API) that I can use to extract data to a Ticker.  I keep on toying with the idea of writing some software to input the data (a la MyCyclingLogs) but in my vast amounts of free time, I haven't even tried to create an account on Velo Hero yet!
Actually, it is rocket science.

I've just written a tool for calculating your Eddington Number, and as a side effect I extended it to copy strava to MCL.

http://mcgalliard.org/eddington

Thought some people here might enjoy playing with it.

(is there any demand for copying endomondo to MCL?)

Well that's interesting and simple.  :) Thank you. 70 miles and 101km. Though that's not strictly reliable as I often load up a week or so worth of short rides as one entry. I couldn't see how to get separate figures for each bike.

(or even better, an API)

Well, there is an api.

Yes :-)

Send me an e-mail. I'll help you.

I just tried the MyCyclingLog Eddington calculation and got this:

Fatal error: Call to a member function item() on a non-object in /home/mcgallia/public_html/eddington/src/JoanMcGalliard/EddingtonAndMore/MyCyclingLogApi.php on line 254

Thanks

Stupid MCL and it's non-compliant xml.

I've turned some debugging on.  Can you try it again? Let me know the time you got the error so I can find the right line in the logs.

Just did it again at 15:12 (I guess that's 14:12 for you) and got an error message. Good luck with the debugging!

The server is in Utah, or Arizona, or somewhere, but yes, I use UTC.

There is nothing wrong with that data at all that I can see I couldn't reproduce the error.

I've tweaked the code to remove all the umlauts and Eszetts, see if it works any better for you.

Let me know when you have had another try.

Is this the first instance of spam on MCL? (I don't suppose so, but it's the first I've noticed.)

In other "Doesn't MCL tell you curious things" news, my distance for this January is more than 50% over 2014's and more than double last year's. The actual figures are unimpressive, but how did that happen?

Help?

Me Mycyclinglog ticker has gone belly up all of a sudden ???

It was working with the following pasted into the signature panel of me profile - book ended by the usual square brackets img and /img thing

http://cyclingticker.com/ticker.php?user=slope&group=yacf&distance=10000&units=b

^ does that look right?

Advice sought from this spirited kindly communal playground please :P

Don't think it's just you. The ticker is hosted on a goodwill basis somewhere so in don't think that we can expect a high degree of robustness.

Thirteen years ago I started My Cycling Log to share rides with friends and family. It has been rewarding to see so many others find motivation in using the site over the years. Thank you for being part of this journey, but it is time for My Cycling Log to shut down.

Your data will remain available for download through the end of 2018, but I will soon turn off the ability to create new rides.

I’ve been recording rides there since 2009, and seeing what you’ve all been doing. What else does everyone use these days?
