Photography Homework No 1
« on: 09 January, 2012, 03:54:35 pm »
Split from another thread.

The idea is for a weekly or fortnightly photography theme, just to give ourselves something to shoot and something to think about.

Nothing too technical, nothing requiring mountains or sweeping vistas.

Let's start with a self portrait each.  If you don't want to show your face, you can get creative with lighting or whatever, but keep post processing down to a minimum.

Don't worry if the photo's naff or whatever, it's just to get the ball rolling.

I don't have any software at all atm, so if I post anything, it'll be as it comes out of the camera.  But sounds like a good idea.  I've found other people's work in previous projects quite inspiring.  I need to think about this one.

Fabulous idea, Gerald.  As a general idea, should we maybe look at having one of these a week from now on?  Announce it on a Monday morning, deadline on the following Sunday night, maybe?

Then I could add a poll to the thread (depending on what people want) once all the shots are in?

I also think that we should have a rule of "no pre-existing shots".  If you post a picture in response to the homework thread, it ought to have been shot specifically for the homework thread and should be dated as such.

I like the idea (much like dpreview's Challenges).

I'm in (with my £49 Canon A495)

Maybe annouce a new challenge every week but with a 2 week deadline (it's tough to get out and about some weeks)

Like the strobist challenges, you should have to include a certain motif in a copy of the shot that is specific to the challenge.

Maybe this week you should have to include a toy dinosaur somewhere in shot.. Just to show it was created for the challenge.

No voting, but comments and criticism are fine.

I'm pretty sure I don't have one.  :(

Maybe if someone who does have a toy dinosaur photographs it and puts it online, then we just need to print it off, and Hey Presto!

I don't have a toy dinosaur.  And David only generally does that sort of thing when a prize is on offer - it's usually a 'code' shot, so he asks people to take another frame the same as the one you've just done and, say, include your hand in front of the lens in a certain gesture.

Not necessary here IMHO - let's play by audax rules and work on the honour system.

OK, so what rools are there?   Does it have to be just of the yacf'er or can there be others in the shot for mood?   Is any post image processing allowed?   Are there limits on the kit to be used?

AIUI, the face is very important in a portrait:  Agreed?

Just wanna know like?   :)

Gerald C set the first idea rolling so should be able to set the subject and rules. I think a fortnight would be better than a week.

Sorry, it was a 'do it now or don't do it at all' moment, and there's been far too much of the latter recently.
So, just pissing about really (plus I didn't really want to scare the bejesus out of anybody!). Apologies if I've lowered the tone....

I like Kathy's. All the right bits to focus on her but with lots of environment.

I now have to do some serious thinking to match those..

...but it's the entire opposite of what I was trying for! :-[ I wanted to zoom in more and just have the hazy reflection (it's a very old mirror with interesting optics), but every time I tried, the camera overbalanced and fell off the bookshelf!

Fab photo, but not really in the spirit of 'homework' seeing as it was taken some while ago...?

This any better Mrs P?

Charlotte - Not taken in the 'spirit of homework either. Posted in humour as a 'starter for 10'. None of my photography is 'homework' - the word has a connotation with 'chore' IMO.  ;)

Could we call it 'challenge' instead ???

I've 'hyperlinked' my original post  :)

As there is only a finite amount of ways you can take a portrait photo, and this is best of a bad bunch, here is mine.
