Interesting development. I wonder if that will force Canon to improve on their G1X.
However, at £>1000, I would definitely be tempted by a Canon 70D (and save up for some nice lenses). After several years of waiting for a DSLR that had everything I wanted at an enthusiast's price-point, I think the 70D is it.
The nice thing about the Canon DSLR range is that you can get their 50mm F1.8 for about £90 and it gets fantastic reviews. Not quite a portrait lens but good enough when it's that price.
