Title: Fulcrum AFS Centre Lock disc mounting: Discs and 6-bolt adapters
Post by: FifeingEejit on 18 January, 2019, 02:09:01 pm
Got some cheap Fulcrum 77 disc wheels with the AFS external thread and lock ring for a bike I'm building out of one of my old bikes (54cm frame and I'm border line 56/58...).

The donor bike has Avid BB7 Road calpers with G2 Clean Sweep rotors which are 6-bolt attached to Shimano RX something wheels (which are QR...) and Center Lock adapters for the discs.

I can't find any evidence of 6 bolt adapters for the AFS interface, and although it seems to make sense that the lock ring should be interchangeable, I've found on another bike that the Shimano Ice-Tec Ultegra discs really don't like you using any lockring other than the one that comes with them (which of course is internal threaded like all shimano centre lock standard hubs).

Has anyone got any experience of any of:
Fitting a 6-bolt adapter to the Camgnolo/Fulcrum AFS centre lock system
Using AFS suitable centre lock discs with an Avid BB7 Caliper

Of course this could be an excuse for me to switch the SRAM gears for something more sensible and Hydraulic brakes...

a problem with some centrelock style discs is that the connection between the aluminium spider and the stainless braking surface is made at a large diameter, such that the some brake parts (eg the  tangs on BB7 pads) can foul on them. AFS discs appear to have a small-ish diameter spider so I think there is less likely to be a clash.

Provided the track width/diameter of the discs you use is correct, and you are prepared to adjust for any small differences in offset, I don't think you are going to have big problems.

cheers

aye the tangs on the Juicy/BB7 pads is a well known issue with some 6-Bolt systems too, think it's Hope that had the biggest problems historically, though that may be due to them being one of the first to start selling floating rotors as aftermarket options.
But then any MTBer using Juicy brakes had a death wish anyway...

I need to haul the old bike out the corner and take it apart before I find out what'll work on the new frame and wheels.
And I'm tempted to finally change the rear rack to a disc compatible on on my tourer so...

Could be more than just the RX wheels for sale of course

Been digging a bit more after trying out the 6 bolt adapters on the wheels which proved to be a no go.
However the standard Ultegra Ice-Tech disc did fit using the Fulcrum locknut.

Result I found was that there are shimano options that should work with a BB7...

Says it's a wide type rotor so the shimano wide rotors should work...

And the product lists are here:
http://productinfo.shimano.com/#/com/3.8?types=mtb&acid=C-461&cid=C-460

But then I thought... I want to put a rear disc brake on the tourer, so I could do that now and put 105 Hydraulic on the Genesis instead of moving the SRAM stuff over from the Kaffenback...
But then I remembered Shimano cranksets are ugly and the SRAM one's quite nice but 10 speed, and new 105 would be 11... gah!

There is no identifiable difference between 10 and 11 speed chainsets.

Yeah, just read that.
Just dropped 499 quid (according to the blocking text message my bank sent me) on stuff, although PayPal wanted 17quid in conversion fees on top of that when I tried that after the initial attempt to purchase failed...

Anyway to answer my OP
No the 6-bolt adapters you get from shimano etc. don't fit on the AFS centre lock hubs.
