Old Roads 300 - 10 May 2014
« on: 06 April, 2014, 08:59:59 pm »
Time to think about the next Exeter Wheelers' event.

The route is simpler than the first time of running, with a gentler route over the Blackdowns to the finish.

After an early morning dash through the city of Exeter, the route is simple and rural. There are controls at the market towns of Okehampton, Barnstaple, Wiveliscombe, and Cheddar. There's a final, garage control, followed shortly by the market town of Ilminster, then a last leg up and over the Blackdowns back to Honiton. Food and drink at the finish.

This was my first 300 a couple of years ago.
It was an education, my saddle was wrong (it carved it's way into my crotch in salty, slow kind of way) and I'd never heard of Sudocrem.
It took a few weeks for the scars to heal.

The route was great, I survived and I'd love to come back and ride it again, just need to sort my calendar out.
If Chuffy signs up, that might swing it.  ;D

I've heard rumours. There is a slight change to the route:-

It would be my pleasure to stare at your arse for 300k, but I also have a scheduling clash.... It's Eurovision Song Contest night and I missed it last year thanks to the deeply unhelpful timing of the Bryan Chapman. Might have to enter and work out a bail-back-to-base option...

Yes, I am entirely serious.  :-[

I'm not sure I can make it yet. (Gaddi)

You must be representing GB in the Eurovision song contest, surely not staying in to watch it?  :o
Best of luck Chuffy, hope you win.

Loved this ride last year (indeed the whole series). Hope to ride it again sometime.

Really wild guess - that's around here somewhere?

20 years ago I cycled to school down that bike path each day.

Well spotted. Yes, down there and over the bridge. It avoids the 'Right, please walk, at no right turn' in the town.

It almost seems rude not to ride this, particularly since the route almost passes our front door, but I'm not sure I can spare the time. Will have to think on it.

Come on Simon - if you are riding you can lead us all to your place for CAIK, and COFFEE, which would be nice !!!!!!

And I may get to chat to you for a bit longer than the 10 minutes on the Dean. Having said that, you'll probably be way ahead of me quite quickly on this hilly route.

Hmmm. Who dropped who on The Dean?

Having said that, in order to check everything is still functional after the beasting on the Valley of the Rocks 200k last weekend, I did a loop going up Cheddar Gorge this evening, and Strava has me going up the Gorge four minutes faster than 4 weeks ago. So maybe if I do ride it, I’ll be able to keep up with you…  ::-)

I wouldn't see you for dust if you were on gears... particularly if you get faster by 4 minutes every fortnight.
Well, hope to see you in May (and Feline?) - or sooner, if you are doing EY on Saturday?

I entered this ages ago, I had almost forgotten. Still liking forward to it... I think. Should be a gorgeous ride if we get friendly weather.

You lot may laugh but that calendar is the household memory, except when we forget to consult it.
