Yes.  I have "ex-smoker".  Nearly 60 years ago for me.  It's like an accusation.  It never appeared until I was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation a few years ago.  Apparently, according to an unrelated investigation, I also have COPD (no symptoms).  I wonder if future observers might see the COPD and "ex-smoker", tap their noses and go, "Ah!".  A doctor friend told me that in connection with COPD, "lives in Manchester" would be a far more pertinent remark!

I was born in Manchester, and I can remember the motes of soot spiralling down into our back garden when I was about 3.  My elder sister had chronic bronchitis and the doc told my parents that she would grow up stunted if they didn't move.  My 4th birthday was back home in Norn Iron.  Sister was later a runner-up in a Norn Iron fencing championship.

Ha!  Fencing is a great skill.  Tree surgeons just flattened ours, so we are looking for someone!   ;) ;D

Tried fencing for a year or so. Bloody hard work and completely asymmetric.
I kind of fell out with the club because all I wanted was the fitness, they only wanted competivity.

Never thought of that, Mike - does one always lunge on the same leg?

One does.  Back in the day electric equipment was connected via a wire up your sleeve so it was strictly monolateral. Nowadays, dunno. Fencing rarely reaches TV because it's too fast.

Had a gander at the report of my coronarography. Amongst other notes: "tabagisme sevré", i.e. smoker, stopped. Yeah, >50 years ago but they bear grudges.  >:(
yes I asked about this one years ago.
although every fag you don't smoke your body repairs itself significantly, the damage it does is still statistically important for studies and enough health wise for non and ex to be recorded for all time in health records beyond gp contract reasons (extra dosh for a patient that stops smoking).

Both my parents fenced.  My mother was the Southern African women’s foil champion, back in the early 60s.

That's very true, but mostly you don't make big lunges, just back and forth.
However, one foot is pointing to the side ('forward' because you stand side-on), the other, back, foot is in normal position (but you are moving 'sideways'). So very asymmetric.

While I was no bloody good because amongst other things I've got short arms and legs.  I did come seventh in the Scottish Universities épée championship in about 50 AD.  There were 8 entrants.  Still got my épée in the loft somewhere.

Heart behaviour 'interesting' during my ride today in that I had what felt like angina when my BPM was around theoretical max but it went away when I pushed harder. Major coronary arteries clear so I'm thinking of microvascular problems, with the smaller arteries being forced open as the pressure increases. Could probably get an idea of what's up from a scintigraphy. Bugger: specialist appointments always fall of perfect days for cycling.
