When I made the tea this morning I walked up the concrete garden path and it was an ice slide
I am not in the habit of walking around the dark, frozen garden at 6am
The concrete garden path is a good indicator of what the roads are like around about
So I left the bike in the garage, took the car and stuck to the A road
However the A road was fairly dry and I didn't see/feel any ice at all. So in theory i could have ridden in up the A road
So on the minus side I have a tedious rush hour journey tonight instead of an envigorating cycle
On the plus side I have bought a load of wine from Sainsburys to take back in the car
-
I could have commuted in today but...
There are three (count 'em) broken drains on my route. All three quite frequently cover the road in a thin film of water. Only it won't be water at the moment.
There were other cyclists about, but I just don't want to risk it at the moment.
S
-
....it was snowing last night when I got home with a "thaw" (ha ha ha) forecast through the night and I fully expected the A roads to have a delightful combination of slush and ice this morning. As it happens they were clear and ice free. Bum.
-
...... I'm off for Chrismtas. ;D
-
...I'm a wimp :-[
-
I'm a wimp too. Also my bike has been in my bike locker at work since last Friday. Mojo definitely in hiding. There is no limit to my wimpiness :-[
-
...it's legs day at the gym, and I'm not quite up to squats and bike commute.
-
I wimped out as well. I looked at the roads; ice a meter out from the kerbs in places. A64 not sensible then. I considered the likelyhood of the wetherby road being gritted on its entirety. Not likely.
I took the train.
-
I took the train, but I'm kicking myself for it. I was due to open up, and I couldn't face being delayed by those stupid motons again. I'd looked out of the window at 6.30, and it seemed to be no different from last night.
Walking up to the station an hour later revealed that the busier roads were much much clearer, though :(
No news on the motons ;D
-
I haven't commuted for nearly a week now , how guilty do I feel , can I live with myself ? I suppose I will have to , oh god life is awful and no light at the end of the tunnel , is there a Santa? Please say there is , otherwise whats the point of it alllll.
Ahem yeah well I ain't a wimp, just abit upset with the weather.
-

I took the train.
I was driving - well, passengering - past Wetherby the other day. Thought of you and your commute and wondered how it was going in this weather. I think that the train was probably a wise_idea!
-
I'm still cycling in. The roads are pretty clear (I never use the cycle paths anyway), the traffic is light, and the drivers have been pretty courteous.
Cycling home last night was fun: I cruised past a queue of traffic to the supermarket, then past a different queue of traffic on the way back :smug:
Since I don't drive, I don't have an alternative to cycling. Work is close enough to walk, but it would take more than an hour in the hard-packed snow and ice we've got in County Durham, and the buses are running nearly an hour behind schedule, so I mightn't bother even if I didn't live a fifteen-minute walk away from the bus routes.
Much better to cycle :)

Not
Was going to cycle in this morn, stepped out onto the solid ice and thought 'bu%%er'. It melted then refroze last night, not good. So wimped again.
-
Not been out since ast thursday but it looks like some warmer days are on the way.
All my cycling is on small rural lanes which are currently too snowy/icy to risk. It's no fun if you are thinking about falling off on every bend.
Going a bit stir-crazy though.
-
Yep, bike remains in locker at work. Roads like skating rink, no friction there at all.
My legs are developing an odd twitch, and I keep having to flex my calves.
Roll on summer ...
-
I could have commuted today but...
I don't have any more work until 6th January!
-
I could have commuted today but...
I'm on leave. And 170 miles would have been a bit much anyway.
-
I could have commuted by car today but I went by bike, and I was very glad of it since it made getting into town at lunch time a lot easier than it could have been.
-
..I got the bike out of the garage. The back wheel was binding. A closer look showed a broken spoke. The wheel has only been used for 2 weeks! All the other spokes are solid. The spoke broke at the nipple end, I guess it's just one of those things.
So I back off the back brake. It barely works. Then i remember that the front brake isn't so great. It also is 2 weeks old but the appalling weather and the made-of-cheese shimano blocks have worn down. I try to adjust the front brake but it is so caked in mud that it's difficult to adjust.
So I give up and take the car
The reason I got a new bike was to prevent unreliability issues from stopping my commute
-
the distance from the bedroom door to the office door is less than the wheelbase of my bike ;)
-
My bike is at the other end of the country.....
-
For some reason I decided to work from home today.
Still got some miles in because I had a hair cut this afternoon. Had a real blast riding back from town with the wind behind me, and discovered a useful short-cut on cyclestreets.net which I tried out on the way home. It turns out with that I can avoid the nasty chicanes entirely. Shouldn't be necessary to find these routes though and it only helps for riding to centre/north of town not south.
-
I just looked at cyclestreets.net, planned a route across the city and it took me the wrong way up one-way streets !!
-

I'm pretty sure they want to hear about mistakes to improve the quality of routes. It might be just down to fixing the OSM data for the relevant streets.
It started out as a Cambridge-only project and the quality of routing here is very high. This isn't the first time I've discovered unknown short-cuts using it.
-
...I am riding my first 300 of the year at the weekend and I fancied a couple of days off before hand
The weather is of course great today!
First day I've taken the car since the end of January
-
...but babyMekon was up from 2am-6am and I need to drop some stuff off after work. I took my running stuff in and did a 5k instead.
-
...I work from home :)
-
I too endure a domestic commute :)
-
I'm injured.
-

Similarly, PikeMoggit has been confined to the house for six days and has been serenading us at 2a.m. each night. Hence no cycling, due to shortness of sleep.
Mrowl.
I can haz sleep plz?
-
Next week, due to Easter Hols, not only will the traffic be very light, but a parking space is available under our building.
I intend to drive in every day. Other than the occasionally rare one off for business or personal logistical reasons - It's been 15 to 20 years since I've done that. Wish me luck - I'm sure I can do it.
-
I could have commuted in today but ... there would be no point because we're closed. Hurrah for public holidays!

I did it! A whole week of driving to work. A very interesting experiment. I think I deserve some sort of congratulation.
Well that's got that out of my system.
-
the pub bike needs a spin Basil ;)
-
and it's going to get it in about five minutes. :P
-
....I did 600km at the weekend and now my botty is sore
-
...I had to return a borrowed works van. I did put my bike in the back though - so I'll be cycling home. O:-)
-
...I just bailed out. I hadn't washed my kit due to a very busy weekend and couldn't face the journey at 0600hrs in last week's smelly kit.
-
...I had a day off.
Physio appointment in Ashbourne, and took the Brommie there on the bus. Which was free on the way out, as the bus had been so delayed by a road closure.
-
didn't 'cause I'm a lazy git
-
...Tuesday is one of the days I act as my wife's chauffeur, so I only got to ride the last couple of km, which is particularly galling when it's such a lovely day out there.
Anyway, cos it's so nice out, I brought the fast bike today and I'm counting the minutes until I can get out for a post-work ride. What's the betting it'll be raining by 6pm?
d.
-
... Tuesday night is a sculling night, and 20 miles on a bike is a looong warm-up. Ely - Littleport - Ely on the Ouse now the evenings are light enough.
I believe some nasty long pyramids are in the plan. Oh, goody.
-
. . . . 619km of the BCM has left me a bit sore and I need to pick up some wood from B&Q on the way home. Next bike commute on Thursday.
-
... Monday and Tuesday are my days off and this week, for the first time in about two terms, I haven't gone to work on either of my days off! :)
-
...I have been "training" sunday/monday/tuesday and I have to take a large parcel to Taunton and pick up
1) a tent
2) a bag of cement
3) a bag of sand
4) a couple of handbells
I don't have a trailer or a cargo bike so don't give me a hard time about this :)
-
...I'm still in bed feeling sorry for myself. :'(
-
Didn't wake up until 8:10, when I should have been in the office for 7!!!!
-
Man flu
At least I cracked the 1,000 miles for the London Cycle Challenge.
-
I'm try to be gentle to my back in the hope it may get around to healing properly.
-
Been feeling lazy and still haven't sorted out tyre problems (on both bikes).
-
...I don't have a job!

Perhaps you'd like to demonstrate how it should be done? If you are short on tents and handbells simply make up the difference with extra sand.
The route is Devon to Somerset via the Blackdown hills, approx 300m climbing

...it's the Mille Cymru on friday and I am resting my knees this week
-
Had a most horrendous weekend, so sleep is a dim and distant memory...
YAWN.................
Will stay awake...........
-
I did a hilly 100km after two weeks off the bike, and I'm aching so much that walking is painful. I don't know how I'm going to be ready for a hilly 150km in 3 weeks time.
So I'm in the car :-[
-
... i'm hungover.
-
Keswick to the office....too far
-
...it's the Mille Cymru on friday...
How is she, performing live? I hear she's raunching it up these days.
and I am resting my knees this week
That good?
-
I could have commuted by bike but I ran in instead, to accompany Nano J, who rode the 4 miles to nursery on his teeny-weeny little bike. Knees going up and down like pistons, and chattering away like a loft full of starlings. ;D  ;D
Pico is a little poorly so stayed back with Mum and with Mini and Micro who are on their hols.
-
Indoctrination. It's the only way.
-
... but after back-to-back night rides and the race to catch the train from Diss I just couldn't be arsed. I even went so far as catching a bus to the tube station (10 min walk). Today I am officially a lazy barsteward.
-
...slept badly and didn't wake up in time for a pre-work ride, so just the short dash to the nearest station. As a result, I am now sliding rapidly down the bikejournal league table. Bugger.
Still, only need to clock about 80km this week to make it a second 1,000km month in a row, which I've got to be happy with.
d.
-
... but I'm on holiday today and tomorrow so it would have been pointless.
-

I'm quite excited because I've got 1000km again this month. I need to do 150km to beat my best ever (last month), and that's likely, given the rest of this week and Saturday's tandemming. Plus 120km will get me to 6000km for the year, which will make me awfully happy.
Gotta keep riding
-
I'm quite excited because I've got 1000km again this month.
Well done!
I'm hoping to trip past 1,000km tomorrow - just got to make sure I get up early enough to get a decent ride in before work. Not that I'm obsessed or anything. ;D
Plus 120km will get me to 6000km for the year, which will make me awfully happy.
Another 110km for me will get me to 4,000km for the year, which I'm pretty pleased with considering my slow start.
Gotta keep riding
Yup. I'm off work for the first two weeks of August, so I'll need to find some motivation other than the commute to keep the mileage ticking over. Ought to be easy in theory but I suppose I really ought to spend some time with the family. Reckon I should be able to sneak in a couple of crafty DIY 200s though.
d.
-

me too :)
-
....it's the Dartmoor Devil at the weekend, my left leg is still playing up following the crash last week, I need to pick up a food mixer I bought from Lidls yada yada yada
-
didn't 'cause I'm a lazy git
nothing's changed
-
I couldn't be arsed this morning. 5-a-side took it out of my legs last night.
-
...I don't have a job to commute to.
-
I girded my loins, prepared for a manly battle against the elements, a battle such as sagas are made.
Then my wife informed me that:
a) It would be stupid to ride in today's weather.
b) She needed me to get home early to cook dinner.
I said "yes dear" and caught the train.
-
...cycling from Ascot to Hatfield for 9am would confirm to everyone how crazy I am.
-
I'm resting my legs for FNRttC to Brighton, tonight. Feels unclean, though, coming in on train and tube.
I feel particularly awkward when passed by cyclists on my way to/from the station. Is there some kind of badge I can wear to show that I'm really a cyclist? Apart from (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/Themes/yACF%20Grey/images/yacf.png), that is ;)
-
I could have commuted in today but...
... I just couldn't be fucking arsed.
First time in months. The two others in the office where, by the grace of the gods, I can keep my bike both remarked on how odd it was not to have a bike on top of the filing cabinets :)
-
Fresh snow over black ice don't mix as far as I'm concerned, particularly down the one in five hill which is part of my commute... I used the opportunity to take the direct route and walk in through the woods - its normally too wet at this time of year.
-
I was in Canada and my bike in England. Did a virtual commute in the gym. Does that count?
-
...I have to go for a flu jab at lunchtime and will need the car to get there. Anyway, I've frozen my nuts off on the bike every other day this week.
-
.... there's a slight chance of snow later and I don't want to risk it. First time since the last snow.
-
It's shopping day. :(
-
'working' from home, lunchtime ride instead methinks
-
this morning I commuted in my birthday suit ;D
-
I had to drive in to collect my replacement frame for the bike that got killed.
-
Looks like my decision was a good one.
-
I'm still not well enough to go to work.
I developed a migraine just before knocking-off time yesterday.
So I got a lift home with a colleague last night, bizarrely on clear roads. Which was in contrast to their condition in the morning when I rode my bike. I just couldn't see well enough to ride. Or drive. Or walk.
Head still a bit hurty, disoriented at times, rather vague. It's rubbish. And I'm already 'under monitoring' for my sickness record :-\
And my poor bike is still in its locker at work.
-
LG, I hope you feel better soon. I've only ever once had a migraine, and it was a most unpleasant experience which left me feeling slightly peculiar for a couple of days afterwards. Look after yourself!
-
.....I regret not doing so. Three s*dding hours in the car, and the same number or more on the way home. Grrrr.
-
...the school cancelled the cycling course today that I should have been teaching because the pupils might get cold/injured/wiped out in a blizzard by a gritting lorry.
-
...the school cancelled the cycling course today that I should have been teaching because the pupils might get cold/injured/wiped out in a blizzard by a gritting lorry.
depending on conditions, that seems reasonable - well the first part anyway.
We've just had a cycle maintenance session put on by our Green people as a elayed part of Environment Week postponed because "The adverse weather has meant the cycle company providing the training are unable to access their equipment". I have visions of their lockup being buried under a huge mound of snow.
-
My boss is
neurotic lovely and sent me a message saying not to bother
-
My boss didn't :-\
-
Neither did
I mine
-
Was there much snow on the landing?
-
We had an email yesterday afternoon exhorting us to think carefully before making the journey home and advising us where overnight accommodation could be found.
This morning's 06:49 email just said "the site is open, the roads are clear". It might just as well have said "where are you?" to which the answer would have been - "on the way to work"...)
-
It started snowing and my winter tyres hadn't arrived. Since I know from painful experience that my Gatorskins have poor grip in slippery conditions, I came in via public transport. The good news is that my winter tyres have arrived, so I'll be back on the bike tomorrow.
-
Shank's pony for me this morning :(
-
Train again fo me I'm afraid.
It's not the snow, there isn't much, it's the cold.
I'm feeling a bit crap and the cold really hurts.
-
Still clearing last weeks lurgy and cough so cycling in sub zero temps not advised, particularly when father commutes past my office.
-
Tried to commute but just wasn't going to work. The A57 was a parking lot and the surface through Aston was unridable, even on a 'cross bike. I say unrideable, I did manage to make it to the Coop but didn't want to sustain such rough riding for the remaining 9 miles into town. I came to the conclusion it would be better to buy coffee and pancakes and head back home. I may try again later.
-
The locks are frozen on my shed so I couldn't get my bike.
-
Last night: Slicks off, knobblys on. This morning, cycle the several hundreds of yards to work along a round that already had compacted snow on the ground. No falls. Hurrah. Nice to see motorists driving cautiously. Hmmmmm, will that last?
-
I could have commuted in today but...having mounted my bike (http://www.bikester.co.uk/) on the drive, I soon realized I had underestimated just how icy the slope was. Lost control of the bike, bike fell to the left far too quickly to do anything about it...I fell into the flowerbed. Hubby found it hilarious, of course.
-
Over 8 inches of snow. The buses weren't running. Walked for 70 mins to the station, then some nice snow-encrusted trains to London. On the return trip, there was nowt out of St Pancras, so I'm now aboard London Midland's finest to Tamworth.
-

Ouch. I don't find it hilarious, it's so easy to do this kind of thing and break something.
-
... I'm feeling a bit cruddy and not up to cycling on the iffy bits of snow again. Actually I'm feeling a bit grotty even considering the walk to Gloucester Road Tube Station, which isn't a good sign. :-\
-
The locks are frozen on my shed so I couldn't get my bike.
My pal Colin cycled from Granton to Chesser House, where he tried to lock his bike on the stand. The key snapped off in the lock.
-
...the only way I'm getting to work would be if I rode all the way.
If Southeastern trains were to hold their Christmas party in a brewery this year, I wouldn't put money on anyone coming away from it drunk.
d.
-
They could share the planning with Southern Railways. There would be even less chance ::-).
-
going back to the thread title....
I left my bike at work last night cos I was dining at Buckingham Palace and there is, apparently, nowhere to leave a bike (which was a relief as I was in full white tie regalia). When I left, I wished I had been on the bike as I had to bung a ludicrously large tip to a cabbie to get him to agree to take me home (sarf of the river an all that.) Coming home tonight wasn't too bad on the main roads as the traffic, curiously, wasn't that heavy so I didn't get much hassle when in primary, but as soon as I got off the A-roads I had to wheel the bike as the local roads were just sheet ice.
Picking up ItsBruce's comments, I was glad to be on fixed tonight. It just felt a little more secure, but I don't know why.
-
...I was dining at Buckingham Palace...
As you do...
-
Meh. slept in. Checked weather (from the warmth of the duvet; smartphones are lovely). -9 and falling. contemplated the 8 miles of ice I had last night having turned into 27miles of ice. Check trains. they are running on time.
Go to station and buy ticket. fecking trains aren't running on time, and the one I did catch didn't have heating. Now -14 outside York - so the icy roads wouldn't have been slippery.
-
...I was dining at Buckingham Palace...
As you do...
Yeah, just chucked that in to see who would bite ;) I was actually just there accompanying Lady Redlight who was the official guest. When I explained this to whichever royal it was were were presented to he (they all look the same to me) he said: "ah, so you're just here for decoration." I felt so proud. but now we're right off topic.
-
...I decide to walk in but they changed my mind and cycled in anyone.
It doesn't sno properly in SW London (again the law I think) and we seem to have more of the world's rock salt collection this year.
-
I just checked on Google Streetview, and there's definitely some railing around Buck House that you could have locked a bike to, although it's possible that the local security (I think called the Met Police or something like that) may have had issues with you doing that. ;D
I decided to public transport it again, since I'm still feeling a little bit off colour, and didn't really fancy the extra effort of cycling in, especially since it's a little bit nippier out today than it was (LGW has -5°C and LHR has -3°C currently). Of course, the District Line picked almost the exact time I arrived at Wimbledon to fall over entirely, so I took a somewhat more circuitous route, which got me to work, only more slowly. :-\
-
so I took a somewhat more circuitous route, which got me to work, only more slowly. :-\
The yellow line doesn't go through Wimbledon.
;D

Quite - which makes it all the more circuitous...
-
Hmm. Looking at the clear forecast for the week ahead, I put the M+ tyres back on and took the spikes off. Now the pointless incompetents at the Met Office are forecasting light snow for 3am tonight >:(
I might have to drive in, but I think my winter tyres for *that* have arrived at the fitters, so I could pop over and get them.
-
1) the bike was in the garage
2) the garage lock was frozen and I couldn't open the door :(
3) the can of lock de-icer was in the pannier on the bike in the garage... :( :(
4) plan B was to warm the lock up with a gas stove - I found the canister in the unheated conservatory
5) it's filled with butane, of course ???
6) the butane was too cold to vapourise... :( :( :(
I gave up at this point and reverted to shanks' pony... It's cold out there.
-
This morning I peered out from under the duvet. Everything looked white, so thought by far the best course of action was to beat a hasty retreat back under the duvet.
-
I have been laid low by the worst cold I've had in a very long time. And while I've been indoors, most of the snow seems to have vanished from London streets.

Oh dear GWS. Xmas over eating will help ;D
-
the office is closed, because of holidays!
-
And while I've been indoors, most of the snow seems to have vanished from London streets.
Ermm... I think we might have it - would you like to come and collect it and take it home please.
-
My name is Sergeant Pluck and I have not commuted by bike since Christmas Eve :-[
-
My commuting bike needs a new hub and I have no money for new one until my birthday in April.
-
I'm just lazy ;D
-
I went to the doctors before work and it was easier to get the train after that.
-
I spent some Christmas money on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and keep losing track of time when playing it. Or not so much losing track of time as thinking "I should go to bed, but I'll just complete this mission." "I should have gone to bed half an hour ago, but I've just unlocked a new area so I'll explore it first." "I should have gone to bed an hour ago, but I've found some new assassinations to do..."
...and so on. And when one isn't going to bed until 1:30, it's jolly hard to get up and on the bike when the alarm goes at 6:55. :-[
-
...I was going to go for a lunchtime run. Yeah, that worked out. >:(
-
...I was going to go for a lunchtime run. Yeah, that worked out. >:(
Drove in again today out of sheer laziness, and now it's looking like the car will have to be written off.
Maybe the universe is trying to tell me something.
-
That must have been some drive. Everyone ok?
Got my gimpy bike wear on, junk in saddlebag. Rear tyre a bit flat. Oh, it's just that slow leak. Pump up tyre. No it bloody isn't, the air is gushing out. No spare tube and I'm already running late. bugger, train again today.
-
That must have been some drive. Everyone ok?
Yeah - the other driver was a 90 year old woman who was more concerned about her hairdresser's appointment - seemed to have no idea that the broken double lines on the road mean 'give way', not 'pull out into the side of the car that is now almost directly in front of you' (I did the math ... that's a physics background for ya ;) ). Her car has a broken headlight, mine had a bent A-pillar the passenger side door caved in - 10 year old car, so it doesn't take a genius to work out that I'll not be seeing it again. Since it was my first car, and I'm a sentimental old fool, the front number plate now lives behind my desk :)
As a mate of mine on Facebook pointed out, "at least you weren't on your bike" - he has a point, if I was I'd have been axle dressing.
Just got all the insurance related stuff to deal with now, but on the plus side I have enough of a budget to buy something which has a bit more grunt and is capable of carrying me, girlfriend and/or bikes in comfort.
I got lycra'd up yesterday and rode to work, mainly because I had to go via the garage to take the roof bars and bike rack off the car and pick up a few miscellaneous odds and sods (like the new CD I realised was in the player ...). Felt like an absolute wreck when I got to work - being shunted sideways across the road has evidently aggravated my back. Again.
-
Side impacts aren't good for backs. Hope it's just a minor twinge.
-
Side impacts aren't good for backs. Hope it's just a minor twinge.
Going to the doc's on Tuesday - I had a back spasm last week (unrelated to accident) and want to factor out the after effects of that (and yesterday's ride :) ) before I go down the personal injury claim route, which I don't really want to do, but ... <insert moral dilemma here>
-
I should commuted today. But I couldn't drag myself out of my nice warm bed early enough to get ready for the 7 or 8 miles - well not early enough to do it before the road gets unpleasant. Karma has already paid me back for my laziness, as the bus didn't show so I'm going to be very late to site.
-
As a mate of mine on Facebook pointed out, "at least you weren't on your bike" - he has a point, if I was I'd have been axle dressing.
Nah. You'd have used your ninja madskillz to avoid the impact. ;)
-
I'm not going to work.
SMIDSY'd on the way home last night. A bit hurty and teary this morning. I feel a day off is in order.
The bike is broken, apparently. My new Pompino :'( but I haven't seen it yet.
-
:o
GWS!
-
>:(
GWS, what happened?
-
Riding home from work across a T junction. I had right of way. The driver drove into my right side, I was hit by the bumper, went across the bonnet, and seem to have landed on my face. Which hurts. I don't remember any of it. I do remember lying with my face in the road, and some kind passers-by looking after me. It wasn't very nice but I think I'm okay. Two hours in hospital getting cleaned up and giving a police statement. They glued my ear and my eyebrow.
I think I may have gone a bit ranty in the ambulance :-[
-
Oh crap. :(
Bad luck.
GWS
-
damn, blast & all the sweary words you can think of.
LG that,s really really bad news.
I hope you start getting better immediatley & very quickly completly.Bad news about the bike BUT the truly important issue is that you are walking wounded & nothiong worse.
-
Bad news..
Get well soon Linda.
-
Get well soon Linda.
I could have commuted in today, but... I'm all full of man flu so I'm staying in bed instead. Pah.
-
Oh flower! :(
Hope you GWS. You're right to take the time out to get yourself right.
-
Ack, that sucks. Nothing you can do about idiots like that, beyond making sure they're charged after the event.
-
Just to tired.
-
Just seen this - that's terrible news.
Get well soon.
The important thing is that you are (relatively speaking) ok. Bikes, even pompinos, can be replaced. You can't...
Take care - I just hope that things arn't too painful.
-
hell's teeth Linda...
GWS, give me a shout if you want to borrow the POS fixie, I don't need after the end of the week...
-
...I couldn't be arsed.
Sorry to hear about your incident Linda. +1 to what ItsBruce said.
-
Just heard about what happened from Daisyhill - how horrible!!!!! I'm so glad it wasn't more serious, but what a sickening thing to happen. Sending you lots of big hugs :)
-
... my sense of balance is up the spout and i've got a broken toe :'(
Blast, it'd be a lovely day for it too.
-
I'm on holiday for a few days and heading to see family back in the Grampian highlands. Won't be near a bike again until Tuesday. Already feeling withdrawal symptoms.
-
MrsC's car is in for a service and I had to get it there. So my day off the bike will cost me 1300 quid! :-(
-
MrsC's car is in for a service and I had to get it there. So my day off the bike will cost me 1300 quid! :-(
:o :o For a service?? :o :o
My car didn't cost much more!
-
in the past I've had several cars which cost much less
-
Diesel major service, plus cam belt replacement as five years old, plus tyres plus plus... And an MOT.
MrsC's commute is about 30 miles each way and she uses the car for work trips all over the place so she wants it looked after
-
aye, running a motor in a fully commited fashion can be a real pain in the wallet. The Volvo is due for a major service & cam belt change at the end of Feb.
The Mondeo has just han an MOT,insurance renewal & "road tax".
::-)
-
I had to be on the 0706 train yesterday, and I couldn't be sure that the office (where I would normally shower and change) would be unlocked before 0645, and it's a 10-min walk to the station.
So I got up into work clothes rather than lycra, and got a taxi to the station. :-[
My penance was to have to be on a train through Mordor Central. Even worse, on the way back, some celeb was evidently in the seat two or three behind me, as people kept wanting their photo taken with him. I wouldn't have known him from Adam, but am told it was that Wagg-nerr bloke off of the X-filesfactor.
-
Dodgy stomach this morning, so back on the Tube. This is doubly bad as I had planned to drop off the bike at the LBS. Now this is pushed back to Wednesday as I have to head into Westminster for a meeting first thing tomorrow morning so back on the Tube again. :(
-
I'm getting a haircut after work, and then having dinner cooked for me, and didn't want to turn up with a Buff/helmet over my bee-yoo-tee-ful new haircut!
Edit: feel better soon Andrij :-*
-
Dodgy stomach this morning...
No Andrij, that churning feeling is just your rear wheel ;D
Respect for getting all the way to Whitstable on it, btw
-
I am commuting. Unfortunately on a Boeing 777 :(
-
After yesterday's Tour of East Lothian my legs won't work.
-
I wanted to build a wheel over the weekend but the spokes arrived today >:(
-
Long drive + Early Start = no bike with me this week, next week however.....
-
It's Monday, and my day 'off', and that means lots of walking small people to and fro and to and fro and no bike riding :(
Mind, I did manage to walk a ludicrous amount this morning. Left for school about 8:15, got back four hours or so later and spent most of the interim (apart from a 15 minute coffee stop at a mates and 20 minutes work-on-my-day-off) stomping around the streets from one place to another. Busy busy busy....
-
Edit: feel better soon Andrij :-*
Ta :-* Stomach is better now, but beginning to wonder if it's related to work stress. :-\
Dodgy stomach this morning...
No Andrij, that churning feeling is just your rear wheel ;D
Respect for getting all the way to Whitstable on it, btw
TBH, didn't really feel that the wheel was slightly less than true*, but I won't be taking any more risks than necessary. Wednesday's commute will be via the most direct route.
*This sentence may contain trace elements of understatement.
-
... I'm frost averse just now.
-
I left my bike at up north :'( due to playing musical motor cars with jogler
-
I occurs to me only now that you could have borrowed one of the folders :demon:
-
Freezing fog and black ice.
-
I was too slow getting up and had to drive in to the office to save time. Thats four days of bright sunny mornings and dry evenings so far this week and I have yet to cycle on any of them. :-[
-
The first attempt since November. Front brake seized. I have given up one thing after another. Journeyed by train to bike shop.
-
I'm suffering from a serious case of CBA. Again. At least I was on the bike yesterday.
-
Still working up the courage to do a 20 mile commute, and haven't yet recce'd the route....
-
Friday: leave; Monday: lurgy; Tuesday; lurgy; today: leave ...
Still - the forecast's for well-above-freezing overnight temperatures and the chest's almost clear. Thunderbirds may be go for tomorrow and Friday ...
-
I have moved house and can not find my cycling stuff  twat!!!!!! due to a job change in december i have now moved closer to work so my commute is now 7 miles each way happy days  and i have been of the bike since end of november due to work and the weather !!!!thank you yacf for helping me keep the interest there and to not for one minute allow me to consider giving up cycling and becoming more of a fatty than i am already lol!
-
I was getting near to the end of Anathem by Neal Stephenson and couldn't put it down - hopefully will finish on the way home tonight.
-
I woke up with a case of can't be arsed. Thought "you'll feel better if you ride". Checked weather. 50mph headwinds.
I took the train. 20mph and it's tedious. 50? That's effing ridiculous.
-
Last night my whole being was suffering from the >40 roundtrip I had done to work and back.
I was asleep by 8PM
I woke at 5:30 and thought "Sod it, I'll have another hour"
So car it was.....
-
...I got a chest infection :(
-

Maybe I wasn't being such a wimp.
Lorry blown over in street just outside work - landed on a pedestrian.
-
Crikey! That's scary.
I think you would have been easier to blow over than a truck.
-
I'm not so sure about the 'landed on pedestrian' bit; that came from someone at work and I can't verify it.
Neville st and the bridge are closed in Leeds.
-
...I have a beer festival to go to nr Kings Cross...hic !
-
I need some recuperation time before tomorrow's gym session. Feels very odd - this is the first day in a month where I *haven't* cycled at least 4 miles.
-
Well, I did commute in today. But by train and tube. I'm really unwell, but the payroll needed running :(
Horible. It took nearly two hours each way.
-
Deeply unwell still. Not even rail commute :(
-
Got to go and see the physioterrorist.
Pity I've got to go in the car, 'cos the weather is lovely and, short as it was, I really enjoyed yesterdays ride.
-
...my sister is arriving from the Sarth East and I have to act as a taxi service to get her to Minehead.
Sister+3 children won't fit on my bike so I have the Golf
-
Not commuted all week, and heading home today. The no commute all week is due to a general malaise brought on by my need to have my B12 jab and obviously today is due to the need to drive 200 miles to get home :)
Next week I shall be on fire!!!
-
Jury service.
Monday: turn up at court; get name ticked off; am told "Phone tomorrow for Wednesday"
Tuesday: work at library so that I can pick up FirstBorn from school; jury-line says "Phone tomorrow for Thursday"
Wednesday: cycle  to office; jury-line says "Phone tomorrow for Friday"
Thursday: work at library to be on time for parent-teacher consult; jury-line says "Turn up at court for 11 o'clock"
Friday: turn up at court; discover have lost book en route ; sit in room with 70-odd other potential jurors while Sheriff oversees a plea-bargain (last-minute "guilty" to various charges, some amended, "not-guilty" to another) - before sending us all home with a brief "thank you". No point in going to office - so working from home.
-
..I had a dental appointment in the opposite direction from home to work.
And it was a bit gusty this morning
It's not so bad driving to work if 1) it isn't rush hour 2) I can park in front of the office
-
I had to drop my friend at Heathrow on the way. The employer was surprised as she'd been warned to expect me on a bike ;D. I have to say, with the lurgy + rain + wind, I'm not too sad to have a hired car today.
-
I've got a horrible cold and I'm hoping to be well for the Denmead 300k on Saturday. Might have to do it anyway as I'm not sure when else I can squeeze in a 300k PBP qualifier.
Fingers crossed it just goes away.
The cold I mean - not PBP.
-
I had to taxi the kids to / from the school disco at about 5 min after i finished work so i had to use
the bottom less pit that sucks all my moneythe car >:(
-
Having spent 2 days consolidating budgets from various departments my head finally exploded. Woke at 1am and could I get back to sleep?
Saw dawn break and then the alarm went off, lay there, with radio 4 quietly chattering in the background, feeling like I had been hit by a train thinking I really should make a move, when 'er in doors comes up with the killer reason not to use the bike.
"If you want to spend all day Sunday drinking beer, eating crisps and watching the Paris–Roubaix we will have to the shopping tonight." I'll find the car keys I mumble.
RESULT.
-
I think the bearings in the rear wheel have gone on the Kaffenback, or something is going south anyway, so my usual 20+ miles of commuting is probably a bad idea, and is just terminal failure waiting to happen somewhere maximally inconvenient for work and home.
I'm a bit loathe to lock Red up in the bike store at work, he looks too desirable, and even with three locks on him I'd still be worried.
That leaves Vince, the snow bike, who has 52" singlespeed gearing and studded tyres, so would be hard and noisy work to cycle over that distance.
It's easier to just jump on the Tram and Tube, and at least I can read my Kindle. :)
-
... I'm on holiday. My holiday house is 25 miles away from where I was doing my volunteering, the only bike is a Brommie with flat tyres, there's a nasty hissing noise when I screw on the 1960's pump, I've hired a car, the roads are quite empty, and I had to be there at 0830.
I had a fabulous time. I managed to delay two trains by 10-15 mins each, by dint of not putting a certain lever back into the frame hard enough.
Lie-in tomorrow.
-
... I've been in Edinburgh since Saturday. It's a much more interesting place to cycle around than London. I covered all the points of the compass while revisiting old haunts (Sneaky Pete's is still going!) and didn't find any hills I couldn't manage on a 70 inch gear;)
Mind you, cycling down Frederick Street, I found the combination of cobbles, steep incline, well inflated slick 25s, clipless pedals and fixed gear to be quite exciting. It's one way to find out if any of your components - or fillings - are loose.
-
First week of the school holidays and I'm doing childcare ...
... which is fine. I may manage some fettling.
-
My knee has been sore/watery since I spent 5 hours crouched on angle-iron struts, prepping for painting. My family kept me up until 1:30am again, and I have to get up at 6:30 for work.
-
Still haven't sorted out the child seat on the commuting bike so I had to do the nursery run on foot today.
However, I'm at home so I can go out to do a few laps of the park at lunch time to get my legs sorted out for the 400 at the weekend.
-
The foot and the knee, they say "no".
Will do it tomorrow, though :)
-
I was planning on commuting in on the commuter, but it's still in bits scattered around the house.
I could have used Red, but I get a bit nervous of leaving him locked up in the work bike store (which isn't all that secure).
So, I just chickened out again, and at least I'll be rested when I get home, and need to get into heavy bike fettling.
-
Haven't commuted in all week, on account of holidaying in Mull to avoid the wedding.
-
..I did the Bryan Chapman Memorial 600km at the weekend. My right achilles tendon is feeling much better today but I was hoping to do the Irish Mail 400km next weekend so it's got to recover.
So I'm doing RICE, Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevation
Rest= don't commute :(
Ice= morning and evening a few minutes with an ice pack
Compression= just got a tubigrip bandage on :)
Elevation= put my feet up on a cushion while asleep
-
I am back on the treatment above. It worked sufficiently to get me over Snowdonia once but on the return trip my Achillies just got worse and worse. This was for the Irish Mail 400 (http://audaxing.wordpress.com/2011/05/23/irish-mail-400km-ride/)
I can barely walk at the moment but it is better than yesterday :)
And I've now done the qualifying series for Paris :)
-
. . . I really didn't fancy the A64 with 60mph gusts.
(car-commuting colleague said he had trouble *driving*)
-
Rear brake was rubbing slightly yesterday. So I slept in, thought "I'll just tweak the spokes, true that wheel up a bit". Ah. Broken spoke. Drive side. buggeration.
Contemplated switching rack over to other bike, realised I was already 30 min late and caught the train.
-
I left work very late last night so a co-worker gave me a lift. So this morning I walked, sat on train walked instead. 2 hours. 1hr walking 35 minutes on train 25 minutes waiting for trains. If' I planned it better I could have avoided most of the waiting. I enjoyed the walking. Bike home.
-
... I was on Holiday, camping with many wonderful people from this manor. Ride reports will follow. But maybe not from me.
-
^^^^
I have the same excuse 8)
-
... I'm suited and booted today as I had to give a seminar this morning. I didn't even bother with a BorisBike and took the Tube the whole way - a journey which took 1.5 times to normal amount of time. :( Then there were the pedestrians and fellow tube users I encountered. >:(
I'm beginning to think I prefer cycling in to work because I have few direct interactions with my fellow Londoners when I eschew public transport.
-
I'm beginning to think I prefer cycling in to work because I have few direct interactions with my fellow Londoners when I eschew public transport.
Yes, but most of the time on public transport in London, it's not a few interactions with others, since you're jammed into a carriage like a sardine. :-\
At least I'll generally have the luxury of travelling after the rush hour periods for the next couple of months.
-
I have been on leave all last week and today. Back in tomorrow. But I am so stiff from the church street party yesterday that I doubt I will ride tomorrow. :(
-
It was my day 'off'. So instead I did the 45 minute round trip to school with boys and buggys and stuff. 3 times so far - and fixed three technical problems whilst I was there :-\ And if my boy stops dancing half-naked around the living room and finally puts his [insert swearword of choice here] karate kit on and my other boy gets a wriggle on with his tea we can go for round trip number 4 ::-)
-
... it would have been a 10 hour round trip (meeting). No-one would have thanked me.
-
I drank a large amount at LFGSS South East drinks, last night, and I had to bring some bicycle wheels into work. So I took the train.
Luckily, I have another bike at work, so I can always ride home if I want ;)
-
Struck by a headache with increased visual disturbance. Could be a migraine, I suppose, but I haven't had one for a long time, so I'm deciding not...
-
Mrs V suggested I could pick up V Jnr and her mates from her art class in Simonsburrow
It's a nice day today but maybe I will be able to get bike to the pub tonight
-
...my left Achilles tendon is still painfully sore after last Sunday's ride. :(
d.
-
...it's Vorsprung Jnrs art class again
-
...I'm on leave!
I did have to get to school on time, though. It was TGL's Review.
-
I'm absolutely shattered.
As I've got FNRttC this evening and a full day tomorrow I've decided to be lazy today in an effort to conserve some energy. To balance things out, I did use a BorisBike this morning.
-
my arse is still sore from Dunwich :(
-
my arse is still sore from Dunwich :(
Mine too. I rode the Genesis Orange Bling to the LBS for its first service. Bus home. Shortly to unfold the brommie for a trip to somewhere dahn saaf, where I have to work 8pm to 8am. Why I bothered to reset my body-clock to "normal" after Dunwich is the mystery.
-

Yes, am still jet-lagged.
God that ride from Smithfield Market to London Bridge, although it was a brief journey the three of us were trying to keep our bums out of the seats :-[
-
I ache all over from the West & Midland 400k audax + I got took out by a pesky Badger running into my front wheel during the ride leaving me with an achy elbow, hips & ankle :(
-
I don't feel the need for lycra on the commute, but a suit and and the sitting in graduation feeling sweaty after seemed like a bit much. A ride round town in robes would have been fun though.
-
I didn't commute in today because I realised I hadn't rested sufficiently after Dunwich - haven't had a day off the bike since. My body's been trying to tell me it really needs a little break, so it's about time I listened.
And then disruptions on the tube really made me regret not riding in.
-
Having The Snot (bah!).
-
Want to have a day of leg rest before the weekend so in theory could do a long ride
As it happens I also feel terrible at the moment with hayfever so the long ride might not happen
-
... I took the day off. :)
OK, I should be sunning myself in Brighton right now, having cycled overnight to Newhaven then over to Brighton. OTOH, getting to bed early and waking up late (both relative terms ::-) ) has done me a world of good. I might even feel calm enough to get back on the bike for an early morning ride tomorrow.
-
I hope to have a couple of microphones and a stand to take home and that would be awkward on the bike. Mind I paid for 'next day' delivery on Wednesday so I drove in yesterday as well!
S
-
for tomorrow : I need to drop my audax bike off after work in swansea as I think the bottom bracket is knackered :(
-
In spite of getting back on the bike yesterday and actually enjoying the commute, I took the tube today. I woke up in plenty of time, intended to cycle, but was just too tired. :(
I'll try again tomorrow.
-
...left Achillies is still a bit achey from PBP
-
I had to get the c*r to the garage for MOT, booked in along with the information "The water bottle needs replacing". Said garage phones me to tell me first "The lease company are not approving the replacement" Fine, not my car, goes back in a few weeks and that's the end of company cars for me. Then "The water bottle needs replacement for the MOT, so the lease company have approved it to be done. Still fine. Then "We don't have one - will take till tomorrow to replace" Grrrrrrr. Stuck on the tube again tomorrow. May ride anyway.
-
I have a leaving do this evening so opted for public transport. Two things that really peed me off this morning:
1) Bloke next to me on the train kept sniffing and quite frankly he stank. When he alighted at London Bridge it was a frigging relief.
2) I oystered in at Charing Cross and tapped in at Embankment to find that my card had flashed red. It turns out that at Charing Cross it had deducted me £6.50. For a single trip from Hither Green to Charing Cross. 'Sorry love, can't refund you as its national rail, you have to contact this number'. Grrrrrr >:(
These two points demonstrate why I cycle. When you go by public transport you are cattle and a slave to their systems.
Commute resumes tomorrow.. :)
-
Could have commuted in but residual bleerrrggghhh means I am off work (again) :(
-
.... l was woken at 3 a.m. with the wind howling outside so rather than endure cycling 20 kms into that headwind l put my alarm clock back by 30 minutes and went back to sleep !
-
... I'm a lazy git who is tired of fighting headwinds only to arrive at the office.
-
Quitter! ;D
Just think of the tailwind you could have had tonight wafting you speedily home.
-
Quitter! ;D
Just think of the tailwind you could have had tonight wafting you speedily home.
Bah! The evening tailwind always pales in comparison to the morning headwind.
I do plan on cycling tomorrow — I'll be bringing the new bike to the Blackfriars protest.
-
Ooh! All the more reason to be there
-
Ditto, especially as I am recovering from the dreaded manflu. TfL laid on special disruption on the Central for me.
-
It is the Staff Awards tonight so have to wear a nice dress. Came in by train and tube today. Bad atmosphere at station as they cancelled some of the destination stops on its way to London Bridge and reduced the number of carriages from 8 to 5, so lots of people alighted cussing very loudly. Just as the doors were closing I realised that I had not tapped my oyster in  This resulted in a £20 fine at Cannon Street.
I cannot wait to get back onto the bike tomorrow - effing bloody public transport >:(
-
Cannot commute at all this week :-(
Mrs F is away all week for work, so I need to stay back and get the kids off to skool.
No time then to ride in.
( I normally leave at 0600 if I'm riding in. )
-
I'm not cycling tomorrow.
currently it's blowing a 30mph gusting to 53mph westerly. My job lies west.
-
When deciding that gusting wind makes the journey by bike too risky I should remember that the return by public transport will take six times as long and that it's quicker to walk the eight miles.
-
Got a beauty of a chest infection. GP wanted to sign me off, but have too much to do before Xmas for any of that.
-
I discovered that 17 loaves of bread - a kg of marg and a 5lbs of jam won't fit in a Barley plus rackpack alongside my lunchbox. Someting was going to have to give and it wasn't going to be the lunchbox (it's our annual toaster testing session).

Having commuted 23 miles a day with 1300 feet of struggle almost every working day since April 2009 I woke up this moring and thought 'feck this I'm taking the car I'm burnt out.'
My cycling mojo has departed :-[ I am tired, so bloody tired I could cry.
-
Andy, I was starting to feel like that, worn out, CBA, when I fell off last week. TBH, I'm enjoying a couple of weeks off the bike, but I'm now starting to look forward to getting out again. I'm sure you'll feel the same in a few days (and you didn't even have to fall off ;) ).
As some of yon Englandshire folk say, you'll be reet.
(I've no idea what that means, but it sounds encouraging.)
-
There's a lot of that about at this time of year - but in less than 2 weeks it'll be getting lighter. Lay off yourself and keep the commuting run down a bit meantime- part way by car or just don't bike it every day?
-
As some of yon Englandshire folk say, you'll be reet.

it means you'll be braw after scoffing a couple of bridies ;D

Thanks to all, especially Eck, for the words of support and advice. Going to take the computer off my commuter and take a less challenging route for next week, stop chasing the figures. Fortunately I then have 3 weeks off over Xmas and NewYear so I plan to take a break, grab some R&R and look forward to 2012. As some may know I ride as an alternative to taking medication for depression (PTSD) so not riding for a prolonged period is not a realistic option for me.
-
I'd cycle commute, but my bicycles are several thousand miles away, and to get to the Space Science Laboratory, I'd have to cycle a couple of miles of one in ten! Even in a car, it's a moderately challenging drive, my anicent 1.2L Corsa would probably die after a couple of days of trying to get up it! A lot of San Francisco doesn't seem to be for the faint hearted cyclist.

^^ This story put a picture in my mind of a comic rocket (much like your sig) taking off from the top pf a pointy hill.....

Ever heard of the 10-toed (non)cycling sloth?
<----- Pictured here.

...I was supposed to go to the dentist who is in the opposite direction to work. So to "save time" I was going to drive there and then shoot up the motorway to work. But the dentist phoned me at 9am saying the appointment was off as the dentist was ill. But I came to work in the car anyway to "save time".
Why do people drive to work in cars exactly? Yes it was nice and warm and dry but tedious and nerve wracking
-
I've finished for Christmas!
-
.. my winter longs were still wet from the washing machine. Seeing the weather get wetter and stay so cold throughout the day, and also finding out I had a dose of the squitsn told me that bottling out today was probably a good thing.
-
First commute after 2 weeks off! :)
50 mph headwinds!
:hand:
-
Heavy chest cold and irritating cough plus headache suggests I should really be in bed. However, tyhe workload requires me to go in anyway.
Bummer, but I'll take the train and stay warm and regret not taking the bike.
-
... some scrote nicked my saddle & seatpin from the stairwell yesterday >:(
(Still, it's an ill wind - looks like an unpleasantly wet afternon/evening in store ::-))
-
I'm working from home today. ;D
-
just too tired. I keep waking up every few hours, which is not conducive to proper rest - and it's been going on for weeks! I hated using the tube, but as I left home late I had the small consolation of a half empty train.
-
I appreciate this may be blasphemy, but have you tried cutting down on caffeine/not drinking it after a certain time…it helped when I had the same problem, although was initially painful.
-
Had to ring in sick. My commute is an hour, and I haven't spent that long away from the toilet all morning :( </overshare>
-
I tend to stop my coffee intake by lunch time, and only very rarely ever have any on a weekday evening. I think my problem may be more complicated than caffeine - work stress.
-
I know where you're coming from. I've cut down caffeine massively, and have finally got blood back into my coffeestream, now that I'm off the black nectar and only drink tea, and try to drink decaff in the afternoons. I used coffee to deal with work stress, but you can't win in that war. It's with less caffeine that I am making my (limited) progress. :-\
-
Ah, that work stress is a bit more complicated. :-\ I hope it gets better soon. The reason I stopped the caffeine was because I was also using it for work stress in my last job, and I came to realise that by 5pm I practically needed scraping off the ceiling, I was so jittery.
-
GWS, clarion.
Guess I've missed my chance to squeeze in a quick 300km today in a vain attempt to catch up with on on mycyclinglog. ;)
-
But I was on a rest day so there was no point.
-
I'm working from home today. So I went out on a little pootle to keep the legs nimble. Forty-seven km later back home and logged in to our systems for 09:00. Wish I could do this more often.
-
Good work, mate! Sometimes it's hard to motivate oneself to get out early and get the miles in unless there's a group to ride with or work to get to. I shall have to watch out for you on the logging websites.
-
...but I've got a friend's birthday party tonight and I seem to have lost my appetite for riding home pissed.

Try a BorisBike for some of the journey. They're quire stable a quiet entertaining when you've had a few. (DAHIKT)

I might wait for the latest round of facial injuries to heal completely first :-X
One might say that there's a pattern developing here......

I wasn't feeling well so didn't go to work today. What really hurts is that I'm around 20km shy of 800km for this month - would have easily cycled that far today if I was well. OTOH, if I hadn't had so many late mornings resulting in suing my short route I would have hit 800 some time last week.
Back on the bike tomorrow, I hope!
-
Yes I've had a rotten cold too and unusually for me let Claire persuade me to get a lift in to work and back. Somehow I think I won't be cycling in again until next week - at least that will give me the opportunity to fix the slow puncture on the Winter bike though.
I've taken a fair bit of flak from the other cyclists at work. They're convinced we've won the lottery and I have a new car and chauffeur but not told them about it (I run the syndicate).
-
I drove in as today was a wightlifting day. But then had a headache and was far too cold so didn't make it to the gym anyway. Ho hum.
-
On nights , knackered, cold and a month old baby means i get no rest ...ooh and the rear brake needs recabling as it freezes solid so i cant brake with it when its sub zero .
So tonight i will be using the car ::-)
-
The lure of fruit loaf toasted and a frothey coffee at home before getting in a Volvo with heated seats did for me again...............second turbo of the week tonight then..........probably
-
I might as well complete a weeks break from cycling while I get rid of this cold.
It's minus -8.1 degrees outside this morning so I didn't need much persuading.
-
Bedridden Monday to Wednesday with flu. Back to work yesterday, so rode the three miles to the station in the morning - into an arctic headwind. Very hard work & slow going. Also noticed that my Brommie's bottom bracket is undoing itself again - by the time I was riding to the station in the evening for the train home, it was fouling the crank. Grrr! Got the bus home from the station. Didn't have the strength (mental or physical) to fix it when I got home last night, and in any case was feeling a bit feeble this morning after yesterday's exertions, so had to resort to my least favourite option - I drove to the station this morning. The shame!
d.
-
I’m babysitting in a hilly London suburb this evening straight after work and a) I really couldn’t be bothered to go out in the freezing cold to fiddle with the umpteen padlocks/chain on the bike bunker to get the bike with gears out (I am NOT taking the heavy Dutch bike, currently blocking the hallway, up any hills) and b) I’ll be coming home quite late, when it will be extra cold, and I don’t want to be looking out for ice when I’m already tired…
(I know it hasn’t rained, but some people like chucking water over their car windscreens in this weather, making ice anyway)
-
I don't have the balance, co-ordination (dyspraxia) or confidence to cycle in this. :-\
Car til it thaws a bit or I get bored...lol
-
The lure of fruit loaf toasted and a frothey coffee at home before getting in a Volvo with heated seats did for me again...............second turbo of the week tonight then..........probably
I did turbo for 55 mins unders and overs, conscience clear O:-)
-
I've been lurgied, stinking cold, throat like a turkey's bum in a blizzard.
At least I walked the three mile round trip, which is better than nowt I suppose.
I did enjoy listening to Crosby, Stills Nash & Young on the ipod.
-
SNO everywhere. Windcheetah is a rusted lump in the garage, and there'd be so much slushy spray at face-level that riding it wouldn't be pleasant.
So it's on with the snow-boots, and dust off the local bus equivalent of the Blue Mollusc. (Actually a "Mango" card. Not an obvious culinary combination.)
-
I walked, and it was hard work. Hopefully in a couple of days the snow will be gone and cycling resume.
-
A combination of snow and the only bike currently in a functional state being the one with the least suitable tyres meant I walked instead.
-
I want to cycle today as I'm not sure getting the car out of our road/into my workplace road is going to be easy but I've woken up and yesterday's slightly sore throat and occasionally sneezing has transmogrified in something far worse.
Will take the car in I guess and hope I have a slightly easier day at work than yesterday.
-
I have broke my foot whilst pratting around ::-)
-
I have broke my foot whilst pratting around ::-)
Jogler asks "can you ride unicyle with one foot", just a thought ;D
-
Having changed the dodgy tyre on my bike and got down to my pants I realised I'd forgotten the bag with my cycling clothes, helmet and lights. ::-)
-
Worked until 2am.
Woken by alarm before 6.
Shedloads of work to do ("You have 2 week's work to do in 2 days, don't you?")
-
I'm getting very good at hitting snooze without really becoming aware of it. Ended up taking the car instead.
Think I need a change of alarm tones :)
-
When you find one that works, can yuo let us know, and we'll supply TGL with the same. ;D
-
... I decided carrying the companies turbidity meter over bumpy Cumbrian country roads in a pannier was not that sensible, and I have to go to an off site meeting today.
Annoyingly the sun is beating down and there's no wind today :(
-
Woke up with a completely blocked nose - lemsip and sudafed all around!
-
I have a gig tonight. Starting at 6.00! So I need the time to get home, change and load the van.
Shame as it's the nicest day of the year so far...
-
rode on Monday after a 200km stoking a tandem, football on Tuesday and then three days of rest before a 300km this SUnday
feast and famine
-
Haven't cycled for a fortnight now. Been really manic at work, tonight is the first night I've actually left on time.
I guess I could have risked cycling but one of the nights I was nearly a full hour late leaving and just couldn't face being that late leaving with the commute to do as well.
So of course we've had great weather this week ::-)
Still my manager is back Monday, so it won't be just me doing the work that the two of us weren't keeping up with before his week off.
-
I lost my company pass.... so its unlikely they'd allow me to leave the bike in the secure car park. So decided to travel in the tin with the other sardines today.
-
...it's the jollydays! :smug:
-
I'd left my rack and panniers in the office, rather than haul them around London on Friday night.
That was honestly the motivation, although I quite enjoyed the monday morning lie in :)
-
I work from home :(
-
I didn't manage to do my usual Monday "commute" as child logistics got well and truely in the way :(
-
I haz a week off :D
Jobs to do mind but should find some cycling time.
-
SNO.
Great big flakes, the size and temperament of angry kamikaze vampire butterflies, going SPLATT as they spreadeagle themselves onto my north-facing windows while driven there by the howling gale.

I had that on the ride home yesterday, and don't blame you ducking out it was nasty.

I can confirm that it was indeed a bloody horrid, stinging, icy kind of snow :demon:
-
I could have commuted HOME today but...
Headwind. Frightening lashing rain driving straight in from the Atlantic. And I'd been up since 4am, and ridden in (with tailwind) through similar rain for an 18-mile trek, mostly off-road.
So I came home in a taxi, and have booked another one for tomorrow morning to retrieve my bike, get on a (steam) train, then trundle back Midlands-wards bidding a fond (except for the blinking weather) au revoir to Cornwall.
-
Rest assured that there's plenty of traditional bank holiday weather going on in the Midlands.
-
Got next to no sleep last night so was in no condition to trek to the closest hire bike stand that takes credit cards then navigate my way across Dublin. Instead, I hailed a taxi. :(
If the weather stays as it is, I will try to make up for this morning on the trip back to my hotel tonight.
-
At blood donors yesterday and am just plain old tired today.
-
I don't have to go in until later!

Too stiff.

... I'm suffering from the side effects of a change in medication. Gliclazide may be a good oral anti-diabetic drug, but the side-effects suck big sweaty balls.
-
If it's effective, how come you're still posting? ;D
Side note, one of my students is diabetic, and towards the end of the lesson his expression had changed slightly and his character too. I think something like a bit of excess cheeriness that I recognise in myself sometimes, so I asked him if his BGs were low. He reckoned nah, but tested a little while later. 1.8. Eeek!!!

Drimp: /dr-imp/ Noun: A weak and cowardly or unadventurous person. But dry.
-
Absolutely shattered. Plus I took a look out the window. *shudder*
Then again, by the time I had gone one stop on the Tube I was having second thoughts.
-
Rotten
man flu cold. At least the monsoon has abated, I'm walking to work and don't have to sit in a metal box though.
-
(yesterday)
I forgot the key to the lock.
On the day the busses put the fares up. After a crappy day when a ride would have been just the thing.
-
I am a lazy so and so, besides my shoes are still soaked after yesterday's deluge

Mrs w w waters broke last night and she is in hospital I have to little boys to get ready for school and I have to go up the hospital as they are contemplating an emergency "C" section and she is only 32 weeks gone !!!!
-
Still tired from the weekend, but more importantly, feel the onset of teh lurgy. I could have cycled, but don't want to give this bug any chances to get worse. At least the Tube was bearable this morning.
-
Hope it all goes well, WW
-
Employer decided to service all 5 showers on the same day.
-
Fingers crossed for all going well, ww. Best wishes to Mrs ww.
-
keeping mrs w w in till at least friday the consultant said the max he is willing to let her go is 36 wks !! so I have to arrange for my brother to come and stay tonight so he can do the school run for me tomorrow as I have to be in work at 6 am !! I do not have the most understanding employer when it comes to matters like this !!!
-
The weather-man said it would be rainy. I used to have no option but a 1 hour ride; I relished riding in all weathers.
Now I have a 35-mile commute (each way, in theory...) it seems 2h15 of cycling in the rain before a day of work is pushing the machismo a bit...
-
Defeated by lurgy yet again. :(

Hope Mrs WW is ok. It's amazing how callous unhelpful some employers can be. :(

Best wishes to the wws

Best wishes to the wws from me too. Boo to shit employers.
I would have cycled in to work today but I popped back into bed for a quick snuggle after turning my alarm off and woke up to the other half's alarm ::-) I must admit to often deciding not to cycle and getting some more sleep but twas an accident today.
Still, at least I took the motorbike in rather than the car.
ZOOOOOM!!!!
-
By some quirk of mismanagement combined with dropping people off at railway stations and being called back in to work last night to sort out flooding, I found this morning that:
1) My commuter bike was still in the office from last night
2) My spare bikes were all locked in the garage at home ... but the garage keys were on my desk at work
3) The car is at home, but the car keys appear to be in London
so I walked - only to get doored as a pedestrian whilst squeezing past a white van, which was half parked on the pavement. The driver opened his door as I was passing, realised what he'd done (I suspect) and drove off at speed when I went down. I'm not really sure quite what happened, but I appear to have gashed my bald patch (on the door mirror on the way down?).
The annoying thing is that I've only just started riding my bike again this week after 3 weeks off for a sprained neck. It's starting to piss me off that it's the second time in the last few months that I've been doored as a pedestrian when passing vehicles parked half on / half off the pavement.
-
That is utterly shit.
-
...it's probably just as well I didn't.
I realised a little while later that I had no shirts, socks or pants in my locker.
This has been rectified!
And I won't be commuting for the next nine days either, but that's because I'm on holiday!

I had a dentist appointment, and then promptly passed out due to lack of blood sugar, bouncing off several bits of counter and furniture.
So I've taken the day off. My face hurts. :'(
-
Si, you steaming great berk.
I could have commuted. But then looked at the huge pile of dishes at home, knew they would be awaiting me when I got back and decided that no way would I cope with cycling home, doing that, cooking for 4 people and cleaning up the bathroom after builders have been.
-
Si, you steaming great berk.
LOL, got to agree with that
cleaning up the bathroom after builders have been.
I admire your bravery, hope you've got a NBC suit handy
-
The bathroom is fine.
It's the kitchen that is the issue.
Teenagers off school.
Hot damp weather produces blowflies.
Teenagers do not get concept of:
- Taking dirty dishes (with food scraps) from bedroom to kitchen.
- Not leaving open jars of food, open packets of ham, etc out on kitchen surfaces.
My patience is wearing thin. Very thin.
-
I feel your pain. Not so long ago Miss S had taken to hiding the apples from her lunch box in the bottom of her wardrobe, given away by the fermenting smell.
Before certain forumites come along to point it out I hasten to add I was definitely no better. Any how I think we've derailed this thread enough for now :)
-
Before certain forumites come along to point it out I hasten to add I was definitely no better.
what goes around,comes around :smug:
to continue the derailment...
I've always had the last appointment of the day with the dentist & needed to be driven home ::-)
Ididn't commute for the usual reason.
-
No commute in this morning on account of it being Junior#2's first day at the Big School.
I was left in no uncertain terms that I would *not* be up and out at 06:00, I would be staying back to see him off on his first day.
So I've packed the bike in the car, and will at least get a ride home, and then a ride back in tomorrow morning to collect the car.
-
... had to go to Glasgow.
-
My bike has developed a slow (but getting less slow all the time) visitation in the rear tyre and, having spent four and a half hours driving yesterday (and working fairly intensely in the bit between the two drives) I didn't have the energy to sort it last night.
The deciding factor was not MrsC hinting that I 'might' go to collect the obesity control cat food from the vet, oh no, not at all.

Listening to the radio before I left, I got the impression that there might have been a little excess water across the cyclepath

I had an interview after work last night and Monday night and then I woke up for no reason at all at 3am last night which is not helping my general exhaustion. Waking up to see the wind and rain didn't encourage me either, so I caught the train. It costs more, but takes almost the same amount of time.
-
I think you're allowed a few days off from commuting, given your general dedication. Most of your miles should count twice, on account of the extra seat.
-
3 days in a row without cycling.
Lots of stress at work
Utterly unsympathetic people at home keeping me awake until 1am every night.
I'm exhausted and it is p!ssing down.
I took the bus. Again.
-
Again. That's a hell of a commute you do, and I'd only be able to manage it if my bike and my health were at their peak. No shame in making a sensible decision.
Pity that the unsympathetic external factors don't help. Nothing you can do about the weather, but other people can help in this situation. Hope that improves.
-
Indeed. Other people don't help. I think our entire house smelling of the tuna that the big lad had for dinner was one of the reasons I was awake so long in the night . It's almost certainly the reason for my headache now :(.
-
I washed up this morning, but couldn't face the drying-on fishy stuff

Think I might have been right
I tried cycling in - having to pedal down a road when I normally hit 35+mph should have been a warning. When I got to the main junction on the road, the police were turning motorists back and around a 20km detour to get to the base.
"Excuse me, if the road totally shut, or could I get through by bike?"
"Do you have a snorkel with you? Is it life or death?"
"I'll go back home then and get the car"
-
I looked at the weather forecast. 50 mph gusts inland at home time and heavy rain. Sod that for a game of soldiers - tin box time.
-
The train and bus are my friends :). I set out to the station this morning and had real problems opening the gate against the wind :-\. I am under-powered anyway at the moment but that amount of wind, even as a tail-wind is going to push me around more than I'm really wiling to deal with :(. Still, I'm getting through months of stockpiled podcasts on the Ipod .
-
I am staying at home with a stinking cold, a supply of tissues and powders... and a large box of chocolate biscuits ;D
-
I _still_ haven't fixed the slow at the rear, and just couldn't be arsed. Plus New Tuesday has really really really easy buses.
-
... but I had to hang around awaiting a delivery of cat stuff. I'm glad I did, because even though I arranged for the delivery to use ParcelForce rather than Yodel, this still means it gets dropped at a localish Post Office, two miles away. Picking up these two boxes with the trailer would have been possible, but hard work, I actually had to unpack one on the doorstep, because that was easier than trying to pick the entire box up, and get it over the handlebars of the bike in the hallway!
There's still a third box in the system, which somehow got separated from the other two, so there's a good chance I'll have to pick that one up. Until today's delivery turned up, it was a possibility that all three packages would appear (on the basis that the tracking had lost it, but not the delivery company), and lugging that lot back on the trailer would have been damned near impossible!
-
Attack of CBA when I got up at 5:00 this morning, and it was pissing down.
But took the bike in the car.
Things cheered up during the day, and I rode home.
However, I'm now comitted to a ride in tomorrow ( car left at work! ).
And although it's 3 degrees outside at the moment, the stuff falling from the sky is frozen.
Meh.
-
Rear tyre was flat
So I removed wheel, checked for debris, thorns. Couldn't find any but did realise that the tire was absolutely threadbare. Remove tube, find hole. Get out patches and glue - glue has evaporated from tube. Look for spare innertube, contemplate riding to Leeds on threadbare tyre with no spare tube and no way of patching a puncture.
Catch train.
-
t'were too icey-dicey
regretted it of course...result was an hour + 40 minutes to cover *8* miles!
I'm not looking forward to the return leg
-
I negotiated a later start and finish with this week's Friday site. So that Granny Annie could come round and collect me in her car, and then when we got to school I could push her and her oxygen bottle in the wheelchair round from the car park and into school and up in the lift to the upstairs hall in time for Celebration Assembly in which the SmallestCub was presented with a Headteacher's Award for his progress in reading - and nearly burst with pride when he showed off the book he'd chosen, and grinned from ear to ear when he spotted me and Granny, since I hadn't told him we'd be there. Then she gave me a lift out to the village I was working in. Worth missing a commute for - especially given how icy it was out there!
-
I've been on study leave all week. Now the roads are all salty, I need to sort out the winter bike (disposable chain; new front gear cable) for Monday.
-
Meeting first thing and last thing, so gave it a miss.
Will do so tomorrow though, I want to see if my bar fettling has worked.
-
ICE. Bah. No riding for me with the council's new 'austerity gritting' (i.e they don't actually do any). Roll on spring, or at least a thaw.
-
I would have ridden in tomorrow, but forecast is for nought celsius + rain at going in time and I'm not prepared to risk pranging my cranky old grid. It's jolly annoying as at coming back time it's going to be nice (for the time year). So I'm getting my grump in now.
-
The winter tyres have yet to arrive, shame as instead I spent an hour (I could have ridden to the office in that time) stood on the platform waiting for the train that was delayed by slippery lines.
-
hello again matthew!
Wish I hadn't bothered - my boss is overseas all week and 90% of my job can be done from home. If it looks dodgy tomorrow morning, I'll do just that. Boss doesn't arrive back in the UK until Friday late evening.
I've worked out how to divert my desk phone to my work mobile, so given the trains are down to half strength, I'll be leaving early, and on the tube.
-
I could have riden today but didn't, 1/ its 23 miles, 2/ it was blowing a blizzard, 3/ I cycle for pleasure not pain :)
-
Just too tired. :'(
-
I've been on study leave all week. Now the roads are all salty, I need to sort out the winter bike (disposable chain; new front gear cable) for Monday.
Then it got icy. Bus ~£3/day => 18 ice days = 1 pair Schwalbe Snow Studs (Spa Cycles); 29 ice days = 1 pair Marathon Winters (Chain Reaction) :-\
I'm basically getting gunshy ...
-
Yeah... I looked out of the door, saw the ice, put the bike away and walked the 2 miles in this morning. Too chicken.
-
I wish my alternative were a 2-mile walk. OK, it is if I'm library-working, but usually I've got an hour on the bus (not to mention waiting for it), driver in shirt-sleeves, heating cranked up to 11, and the rest of us knees round our ears and melting inot our boots >:(
OTOH, I know from experience that it only takes the tiniest bit of black ice, or half a car-roof's-worth of snow at the critical bit of a smart right turn across traffic to dump you in a sprawling heap in teh middle of the road. That's the moment you've lost Control and it's scary because your safety depends entirely on the unknown abilities and awareness of a bunch of strangers in charge of fast-moving lumps of metal ...
Dr RJ (contrary to occasional appearance) doesn't want me coming home in a box. Still, I may float the idea of punting £50 on winter tyres (German quality, natch ;)), largely on the grounds that being able to cycle more often at this time of year might make me a bit less effing grumpy ...
Ho hum.
-
Probably would have been better if I'd realised sooner I was going to chicken out tho. Half an hour early turned into 10 minutes late in the blink of an eye!
-
I'm being a wuss today. The ice on the patio table doesn't bode well, considering the amount of water we've had all over the roads recently.
I shall have to dig out my swimming stuff instead. When was the last time I was in the pool. This is going to hurt!
-
Right call. Black ice in the village square made for some very interesting steering in the car. I would have been off if I'd hit that on the bike.
-
Safe is good. :)
-
The garage door was obstructed by fathers car, itself obstructed by the bins awaiting collection. Normally the bins are behind the other shorter car, but dad wasn't commuting today either. I shall struggle if the trains go wrong later.
-

My suggestion: break the ice BEFORE you jump in, it will hurt less.
-
... after the second 'off' and the destruction of £70 worth of cycling shorts1 I decided that a) discretion is the only part of valour and b) there's nothing big or clever about a broken pelvis and bailed at the top of the village.
The roads weren't too bad, but the cycle tracks and paths were in appalling condition, not helped by a partial thaw last night followed by refreezing. Not even Comically FatTM tyres at stupid low pressure are any good on black ice.
1 - Ice can be quite sharp. It's also cold.
-
It's good of you to check these things for us, though. Glad you limited the damage.
Pity ice and snow appear to want different tools for the job really.
-
... succumbed to fettle-failure. Took ages to swap tyres over to my winter ones, then as I was inflating the second one heard the hisssssssss of a slow leak. As I'm not quick when it comes to replacing tyres / tubes, opted for the Underground instead. What a depressing start to the day.
-
Too icy to do the normal extended (12 - 17 mile) commute around the lanes.
Only 2.5 miles direct - so I ran in instead. O:-)
Direct mountain bike commute planned for tomorrow - in preparation for The Really Bad Weather when THE COUNTRY FREEZES.
-
Back to frosty bus/library combo all this week. Was regretting it in the bus on Monday, until I stepped on to the pavement (not where I cycle, you understand, but representative of the grit treatment normally doled out to significant residential chunks of my commute).
-
Foot deep snow here in Cardiff (or least in my outskirty bit) - too much - more than two miles of untreated - or not treated enough - roads before hitting bits that were navigable. I hate to drive in -first time in months but this level of snow is too much.
Normally I would be doing extended 'commutes' through Pontypridd and the southern bits of Rhondda-Cynon-Taff - they're currently building igloos I think...
Weather not good in south east Wales today.
-
A few inches of snow here at 7:30 this morning (Bristol/Bath area). Thought the main roads would be clear, but they weren't. After several slides I decided to head back and work from home today. At least I was on my fixed with dual spd/flat pedals, but it was still pretty hairy. Cycled about 1.3 miles at average <6mph. Walked a bit too.
-
I tried to commute, I set off from my house in Radyr, NW Cardiff a little earlier than usual (7am). I cycled around the corner and up a gentle slope on Bryn Derwen. I came to the 1 in 11 descent of Drysgol Road and dismounted. I walked down. I remounted for a another 50m and decided to catch the train. The Llantrisant road could be lethal so I walked down the hill to the station. The Valley Line trains were running if not quite to timetable. I got on the next train and arrived in Cardiff late for my intended train. A pity because that was the last train to leave westward for over two hours. I waited untill 9:30 listening to canceled train announcements and decided enough is enough and returned to platform 7 to catch a train back up the valley. The roads in Radyr are uneven snow and ice it can no longer be cycled safely I walked back up the hill and arrived home at 10.30. I tried to commute but I did not.
-
I quite often go through the Llantrissant road around there as a roundabout commute - my direct 5 mile route is somewhat inadequate for the amount of riding I like to do - respect for even trying today
-
I looked at the current weather readings. 27 - 50mph headwinds
So I took the bus.
Wind has now dropped to 10mph. So I would have buried myself fighting the wind, then it would have gone before journey home.
-
Third day off sick. Nasty chest infection. I was OK in Northumbria, but getting back to London has found me short of breath and aching.
I should go out to the Post Office in a bit to see how I get on. :(

Going to the PO is never good for one's health (well, at least mental).
GWS!
-
Thanks. I took a very slow perambulation to the stupidmarket via the Post Office and telephone shop. Now in bed again.
-
This week: a Virus (apparently - 10-second diagnosis seems to have been: your glands are swollen, you've got an infection, no obvious signs it's bacterial, ergo it's a virus).
Previous weeks, following this year's good start, all struck off due to ice-shyness and failure to fettle the winter bike.
-
I didn't commute properly yesterday. I was not enjoying the runny snotty period of a heavy cold so I thought the attempt to ride to work might reward me with pneumonia. So I decided bike/train was the answer.
I was not functioning too well yesterday. I had misplaced my keys, by the time I located them I had missed the train I intended to catch into Cardiff. I am only allowed to catch one route from Radyr to Cardiff in the commuter line so I had to wait half a hour. There are four trains heading west to Bridgend from Cardiff in the half hour from 7.50. I would of caught a train that would have got me to work with half hour to spare. Now the next train was 8:48. I would be 15 minutes late to work but it didn't leave on time so I arrive at work forty minutes late 1hr and 10 minutes later than I expected just for leaving the house five minutes late.
Today I am feeling much better so rode into work on time.
-
Didn't get to bed till gone midnight as sorting an OU assignment. And this is after another late night sorting said assignment. And then when the alarm went off wind and rain were hammering at the window. Stayed in bed.
Of course the day turned out quite nice in the end but think I made the right choice. Intending to cycle tomorrow but I also intended an early night and haven't even had my bath yet ::-)
-
... I ran to work instead. 7.4 miles in 55 minutes - getting faster.
-
I was ever so tired and it was cold and wet outside, so I stayed in bed for another 3/4 hour. It was the right choice, plus I hen had the car so could pick up some beer on the way home
-
.... I had a meeting in London !
-
I've done my lower back in again. So walked in. Breezy, but blue sky in Brighton.
-
I've got a day off! Well, I'll be in work all weekend...
-
... I got the bus.
My commuter is off the road, and my Audax/summer commuter has Grand Prix 4000s on and I see its now snowing in Edinburgh City centre!
-
I drove.
-
My breathing is suffering too much in this cold wind. I need to stay healthy this week.
-
Ah, on the subject of breathing, I was out in the cold wind for an hour or so yesterday. My lungs worked surprisingly well (FCVO 'well') for the duration.
..then went to shit as soon as I came back indoors. That doesn't usually happen. ???
-
I over-slept. Which is nice for someone who is normally sleep deprived.
-
Calves are still sore from the commute home on Friday, regular stretches still required.
-
...I eaten't stray far from a toilet. :(
-
I checked weather. Currently gusting from 40mph to 68mph.
Didn't fancy dicing with cars in those winds.
-
I checked weather. Currently gusting from 40mph to 68mph.
Didn't fancy dicing with cars in those winds.
I did. The dicing was with the verge. Local weather station recorded a peak gust of 43mph during the ride. Unless the wind swings the ride home is going to be a blast.
-
yeahbut this was *constant* of 40mph with gusts of up to 68mph
I had winds like yours on Tues. Going home was indeed a blast - 25mph for one 10mile stretch without getting out of breath.
-
I'm Just Not Up To It. :(
-
It's the weekend ;D
-
I bottled it :-[
-
I have a wrist tendon injury which I am resting.
-
an extra hour in bed was needed.
-
Accra traffic. On the plus side it generally doesn't move much but when it does, it's more erratic than an entire convention of Addison Lee drivers. Still I did see one brave cyclist and he did look rather splendidly mad and English.
-
The drive across north Dublin this morning was horrendous. Shame I'm beyond the hire bike zone, as it would have been much quicker on two wheels. Do hope to give them a try before I leave.
-
… but thought it a 'good idea' to have a bring-your-cat-into-work-day, rather than leave-your-cat-cooped-up-in-one-room-all-day-so she-doesn't-escape-from-the-safety-of-the-house-while-she-still-continues-to-recuperate-from-surgery-day.
Not such a good idea as it happens. She's continuing to cower in the safety of a corner, from which gentle coaxing from me, and laying her food bowl close to her has come to nought. Gawd.
Oh, and the same calf muscle injury that has plagued my so-called fitness regime (one run on a Saturday) reared it's head this last Saturday near the end of our run. Bollocks.
-
Upset stomach is continuing. Will risk a ride into town for some more loperamide, but nobody at work would want me to pass this on.
-
I caught the train this morning because I was worried that 16 miles in my uncushioned bag would destroy my macbook pro.
-
I could have commuted in today, but its a public holiday ;D
-
I slept in! :(
I only have tomorrow when I can commute by bike, this week, as I am driving home at lunchtime on Thursday :(
-
I have no valid excuses. :-[
-
I am working/ sunning myself in Great Yarmouth outer harbour this week. I would have brought the Brommie but I'll be taking the train across to Chester on Friday evening to assist at next weekend's 24hr TT championship. We can't fit 3 people, a racing bike, spare wheels, assorted kit and my Brommie in the car to get home.
Hopefully tonight won't see the police visiting at 3am to remove a rowdy pair of B&B neighbours and I'll get a full night's sleep.
-
My walking pace was about 2kph. I saw the osteopath (again) yesterday but my back's not really any less painful. Maybe biking is better, I think that loosens it up faster/ less painfully than walking does.
-
I have to carry home a set of equipment and documents for a meeting tomorrow and I don't think my employer would like me sticking their projector in a pannier.
-
Team lunch that could have gone big, but didn't.
Don't know which would have been sweatier, cycling or SWT (got one of the ones that doesn't have aircon).
-
I had to go to Northampton. Tomorrow I have to meet the girls at Pizza Hut, so that'll be car too. Meh.
-
I've had an annoyingly bad back this week :(
-
Bike 1. (Green Bike) Bottom bracket was creaking alarmingly so I removed cranks but could not remove the bottom bracket which had not been installed twenty years ago. So the bike shop has the bike.
Bike 2. (Orange Bike) Still needs parts before I can rebuild. Come on Chicken's it was order three weeks ago.
Bike 3. (Pink White and Blue Bike) Still in pieces, Will rebuild it after bike 2.
Bike 4. (Red bike) This bike is looked after well and is not used as commuter at least not in bad weather.
So I am catching the train most of this week unless I get really pissed off sitting on the train then red bike will be used regardless of the rain.
-
...LEL.
-
I was waiting for the replacement of the faulty bike that was delivered last week. It wasn't dispatched. I now have to wait until Thursday for the replacement of this one so I can get commuting again.
-
....I thought I'd give my legs a rest after speeding around the Wilton 200 yesterday :D
-
Smacked my knee on something when working on boats. Cycling will be out for a few days.
-
The twinge I felt yesterday in my knee has turned into a swollen and very painful knee this morning. Meant I had to get the train. I don't linke the train.
-
I had a m/bike theory test & hazard perception test appointment at 8am in central Bristol and didn't fancy getting up at 6am to cycle there.
(I passed).

Congratulations!
-
Buyer for boat wanted to meet tonight to handover keys and discuss some technical things.
So I came to work via train.
At 9am he rings to say can he meet sat or sun instead.
I could have cycled or taken the bus instead of the bloody incredibly expensive train. That's cost me £10 (more than taking the bus).
-
...I drove, so the M5 was closed.
-
... the weather was shit.
Plus I needed to bring some doorstop-sized books in to work.
-
I.'m in Tulsa with a rented bike and summerish kit and looking out at torrential rain and sub 5 degrees early morning temperatures. Have bought some heavier weight kit and waiting for the worst of the rain to pass.
-
I struggled to open a window because of the wind. My commute (regardless of route) is mostly open areas and wind tunnels. The headwind I can manage, but getting hit broadside by a gust does not appeal. Back on the Tube for me. :(
-
the usual cycle commute was substituted by a train to london bridge today to have my elbow fettled; sampled some fentanyl, morphine and codeine in the process (pain - what pain?!). back home in a sling and with head-less radial bone. things you do to save the weight!
-
I hardly slept after rotten, stressed weekend.
Finally went to sleep around 4am. Woke to 20mph winds, rain and 1C temp. Decided to catch bus instead; I usually get 45sleep on bus.
Substitute bus with old-style seats (ending mid-back) absolutely crammed. Single-decker rather than double decker.
Great. Now fed up because I didn't ride and still didn't get any more sleep.
-
I so do not want to ride past where 3 people have died on their bikes, within a week.
:'(
I'll work from home instead
-
Hugs to Ham
Everyone at work keeps telling me I am so brave to cycle in London. It shouldn't be like that.
-
I so do not want to ride past where 3 people have died on their bikes, within a week.
:'(
I'll work from home instead
It's having an effect further afield, I haven't wanted to commute all week due to these (even though only 2 miles out of 9 are on road)

This.
Whilst York doesn't seem to have the same automotive fuckwittery that plagues London (although I did spot someone's successful attempt to wrap a Honda Civic round a set of traffic lights on Wednesday) the combination of people getting mown down and the fact that my commute home is uniquely horrible has mean that I've not really fancied riding at all this week - at least on the turbo trainer I know that nobody will try to kill me.
-
I'm currently avoiding one road I could commute on because of a motorcyclist being killed by a truck on it last week. Strange how it affects you. Working from home sounds like a good choice.
-
Sodding hawthorn. Getting tyred (sic) of this.
-
CBA
-
+1
-
... I'm working at home.
Or rather, I'm trying to - a combination of post-retinopathy scan inability to focus properly is making things a bit tricky. My terminal windows are currently using a 24pt font and I'm still having trouble :-\
-
Didn't get to sleep until after 2am and woke to a 20mph headwind.
Resolutely forced myself to sleep on the (unheated) bus. Woke in the bus depot. Empty bus. Doors locked.
-
I've done that, the number 8 night bus from the LSE back home in Bow. Woke up curled up on the top deck in a garage in Romford full of whistling mechanics.
-
I was regretting not riding in yesterday until I heard that the peak gusts on the bridge were over 100mph.
-
Not ideal cycling weather, then.
-
...my new regime for determining how slippery the roads are going to be (does MrsC have to scrape the car windscreen) said 'no'.
So I get in the car. Just round the corner a car coming the other way pulls in to let me pass, then signals for me to open my window.
"You won't get to Yeovil on the main road, there's been a nasty accident".
So I go the other way round (which is not cycle friendly).
MrsC saw the accident. A car on its side exactly where I came off last Tuesday (and pretty close to where another car had overturned a few minutes before I came off).
A good call I think.
Ice tyres seem a bit overkill in the soggy south west.
-
Black ice everywhere.
-
I haven't ridden in a week.
Every night is spent packing and moving carloads of crap. A 50mile round trip commute is not compatible with an evening spent hauling furniture about.
-
I couldn't be arsed to mess about with flat tyres at 10 past 7 in the morning. I changed into a different (non-lycra) pair of shorts and walked in.
At least I've been told I can knock off an hour early so I can "put my bike back together".
<note to self: do summat about at least one of the three bikes in the shed and two others in the living room. Only having one roadworthy bike can be a PITA>
-
Butterfly's picking me up after work to go away for the weekend! :D
-
I really should have rested up a couple of days after the whisky cycling tour. Barely a month out of hospital and I do not have the strength I need. Cycling is deceptively fun and only later do I realise I'm drained. So back on public transport today.
-
I should have commuted today but the weather was wet. Normally not a problem, First choice Orange bike is at the bike doctors have its spacers rearranged. Green bike does not have working brakes. Red bike is afraid of the rain, it tells me its tyres will go pop if I take it out at this time of the year in the wet. So I got absolutely soaked walking to and from the railway station (about an hour).
I have decided to have a week off riding. Next week I will have orange bike that is raring to go on another winter of commuting. Friday's expected brake block delivery will probably happen today so I can fit them next weekend. So I will have two commuting bikes. I will be full fed up with the train by then.

I should have used red bike today despite the puncture risk. I caught the 7:23 train at Radyr. This train takes the long way around the coast to Bridgend at 8:40. By the time I walk from the station to work I would be late. So at Cardiff I swap to the 7:50 (Manchester to Milford Haven first stop Bridgend) train which I expect to arrive at 8:09 which is enough time for me to walk to work with ten minutes to spare. I am sitting in the train and I noticed that it has not departed. The guard walks down the train saying sorry a tree has fallen across the main line we are going to go around the vale. I arrive in Bridgend at 9:15 and work at 9:45.
-
when I woke up, my right leg was dead, as if I'd slept on it and cut off the blood.
Stayed like that when I got up. Staggered downstairs, wondered what to do. no control over my leg, no strength in it Was intending to cycle but frankly felt scared to try it in case I couldn't manage and ended up stranded. Was already too late to catch bus, so ended up on the train. Still can't walk without stick.
-
I still carp after 3 days abed with lurgy, god I hate the train
-
This morning I had to take the train. At work we have some important clients visiting. I have been told my cycling clothing sometimes smells leaving an unacceptable odour near the door. So I agreed not to cycle in today. After the slipperiness of Saturday morning. On Friday it rained/sleet before freezing turning the local roads into ice rinks. It took me twice as long as usual walking to the Supermarket. I am glad I did not take the bike. This morning was much better. The pavement to the station was not slippery at all. Should have done a bike/train/bike commute. Less sweaty than the proper ride.
-
Snow basically.
It wasn't really deep so just brown slush on the roads and the thought of the faff of having to knock the slush off and leaving it exposed at work to start corroding and then riding home and having to give it a clean in the dark didn't really appeal.
Popped my fell shoes on instead and ran in which was nice and enjoyable. Not having to worry about car-pillocks meant that I could spend more time enjoying the snowy landscape and laughing at people in 4x4s not going anywhere because cars.
-
Better yet is laughing at people in 4x4s not going anywhere because they're clueless muppets who believe an extra set of driven wheels will magically overcome the laws of physics. Also known as "quattro Syndrome" :)
-
Possibility of black ice and prudence was a better option. Falling off isnt fun
-
In Berlin. Always impressed by the number of cyclists just bumbling about in normal coats and scarves. All the roads seemed gritted and everyone seemed to be on their usual bikes and tyres.
-
Day off as there is furniture being delivered and I need to clean / tidy the house and prepare to paint my lounge before more furniture arrives next friday.
-
I tried to commute. Got dressed in cycling clobber. Fitted bags to Orange bike. Fit self to saddle and peddled away from the house. So far quite normal. It is cold and icy bits on the road so I avoid the lane and take the more used roads. I notice that the disc brake is rubbing. It seems to be that on cold mornings recently. Orange bike is clearly sulking I went on Holiday without it a couple of weeks ago. I descend Drysgol road then brake hard at the junction of Windsor road. The back brake locks up completely. I cannot pedal. So I carry the bike back home. I am so annoyed that I took the train rather than Green bike.
-
first working day since 7th nov that I have not cycled the 6.5 miles to work. Instead a 10 minute bus ride and 45 minute train ride to Richmond for meetings.
-
second day not cycling,
left wrist in a splint after a tumble on the KVR so I took the bus to work. It's slower door to desk than both cycling and showering.
-
After 2 days with lurgy and a look at the wind speeds I decided discretion was the better part of valour and came in the cattle car. The right choice probably but I can't really wait to run in on my nice shiny new wheels, maybe tomorrow.
-
Plagued with an achy hip for the last couple of weeks, which has made sleeping uncomfortable, so walked in to work. "Can I still cycle?" I asked my Physiotherapist son. "No" he said. By some miracle, the pain has diminished this lunchtime, to be almost 'gone'. Will wait and see later on what it's like, and I have been trying hip flexors as son suggested, but something must be happening with the bike set-up or summink.
-
Walky in again today. Hips getting better. Didn't wake me up last night.
-
Hips a lot lot better thanks, but, still wisely staying off the bike this week.
Chat tomorrow.
Righto
-
Hello All. Yes, me again. Hip, as far as I'm concerned, is fine now, so I'm looking forward to getting back on the bike on Sunday!
Walked in once more today.
-
today is day 10 of my 9 day fortnight
-
I said 'walking' Matthew, not 'wanking'. Perhaps you misread my post and assumed something entirely different.
-
No just simply that after riding 90 commuting miles this week, I am glad not to have to today. Some how I still have to prepare a presentation for a training course, write up my annual self appraisal, and produce the minutes of yesterdays IChemE regional members meeting.
-
Damn. The explanation is far more mundane! And I wish I didn't have to be stuck here today, rather than out enjoying that sunshine, and which, according to the weather forecasters, is the last for a while.
-
Woke up (0430) in Cambridge. Work starts 0830 in Derby!
So I'm now making use of plush-class on the Stansted-Mordor (the train all cyclists love to hate, see threads passim.) with Brompton in the luggage rack. Dawn over the fens was awesome, but we've plunged into thick fog near Peterborough.
-
Hips a lot lot better thanks, but, still wisely staying off the bike this week.
Chat tomorrow.
Righto
You're welcome.
-
My legs were to sore of the a Sunday Audax ride
-
Six days on I'm continuing to rest my knee, after it decided to take exception to a brick pillar I tried to cycle past, but didn't quite manage.
-
It was tipping it down when I woke up and I have to get to Paddington at lunchtime and it was easier to get the train for today. Shame as the weather is much improved and I could do with a bit of exercise. Tomorrow I will do long route there and back I think...
-
In my wisdom I decided to tighten the tap connector on the cistern at 6.30 am to stop a drip.......bugger.

Ah, yes. Never a good idea at the best of times, never mind 06:30...
I once decided to pop a screw into a creaking floor board at about 0630, before getting the train to London, as a carpet was due to be fitted that day. Left Mrs S to tend a now leaking (in fact, something of a decorative fountain) floorboard...
At least I called the plumber on the way to the station and he arrived and sorted before the carpet fitters strolled in without knocking happily ignored by the sleeping greyhound.
-
I didn't cycle commute today, I shan't tomorrow or the next day :( (I'm going to a different office)
-
Not today but yesterday.....
Storm Imogen had been dumping rain all night on the rotting garage doors that we've been suggesting the landlord paints for about 5 years....Leaving the house and really not looking forward to riding into a 30mph headwind in pissing rain....I put the key in the lock and pull the handle....the door won't budge...I pull handle harder and it comes off in my hand....Pulling hard on the key doesn't want to move it and I'm late for work....the rain has swollen the doors and locked them together solidly....
I spend about 5 minutes pondering how I might resolve this, then think sod it, I'll call in and take a holiday....
Had a coffee, Got a few things done, and by the afternoon I'd got into the garage and the weather had improved so went for a nice ride
Bit of a result really
-
...pubbing tonight to discuss Pyrenees trip in June and training plans. The tube was full of people far too close to me for comfort. Disgusting really.. I miss my bike.
-
On a train to Warrington this evening for meetings tomorrow and wearing a suit.
I would have been quicker to cycle than to catch that bus as his timetable was for term time so he kept stopping and waiting until the schedule due to the lack of traffic.
-
I'm too fucking lazy and my handlebars are bent.
-
MrsC announced over breakfast that she'd forgotten to order me any beers from Tesco so I'm in the car and going shopping at lunchtime.
-
Fair play.
-
In attempt to have more energy for fun stuff I've decided to try and reduce my number of commutes, the constant cold and wet every day and riding at the weekends seem to have resulted in me getting run down so I caught the cattle car. I think Monday and Friday may become the norm for this at least until the weather improves a little, one benefit is that I hauled a weeks worth of clothes in today so the remaining days should be easier.
-
I've never posted on this thread - and now's my last chance!
-
My hill-billy neighbours had another leak into my place this morning so, by the time I'd mopped up, it was too late to ride and I took the car.
Quite glad I did since the weather that I'd have been returning in wouldn't have been pleasant.
I'll take a view on tomorrow's mode of transport around lunch-time.
-
Working from home and my right knee doesn't seem to like cycling at the moment
-
Have you seen it out there!!!
-
Tell me about it. Blown all over the place on the motorbike today.
-
I decided to stay out of the way of the police executing a drugs raid on the flat over the road :o
By the time they finished and were taking off their body armour it was a bit late so I drove to work.
-
Sold my number 3 road bike to a colleague, didn't think I could carry a bike on a bike and didn't want to walk home either.
-
Lots of knee pain so taking the week off, sigh
-
I'm following the sage teachings of fboab and helly and not going for a full house when I have audacious* plans for the weekend. I'm still perplexed as to how people put up with the train every day.
* for a very limited value
-
Oasts and Coasts cleaned me out so no commuting this week as I am flying to Mallorca on Wednesday for teh 312 so best be in tip top condition for that
race fun looking closed road sportive :D
-
I actually did. But then, about 5 hours after I was s'posed to leave, someone on their way out the door offered me a lift home....
"Thank you, but I've got the bike here,"
"That's OK - I've got the big car today... we can see if it fits if you want?"
Dear Reader, I am weak. But also have warm-ish feet right now.
-
I didn't realise 'til too late that today's shift started an hour earlier than yesterday's.
Ordinarily, I would still have had time to ride in but I needed to sit down with the planner to sort out my new shift rota so car it was.
Shame; it was a lovely afternoon and I finished quite early.
Lesson learned.
-
(Actually about tomorrow, but...)
I had to take an insurance form into the vets' today and the vet who is currently caring for our elderly mog came up to me to apologise that the two samples she'd taken yesterday had been mixed up. The blood one had been sorted but could we get another urine sample.
Sigh. So I'd better drive in tomorrow. There's nowhere to lock a bike at the vets' and I'm not sure I want to be carrying bio-hazards (tom cat!) on the bike anyway.
It was only after I'd got back to work that I remembered I'm also collecting half a sheep and a quarter pig for the freezer tomorrow as well. They'd not quite fit in the pannier.
-
On Friday, leaving the building already quite late in the evening, I unexpectedly found a flat in the Marathon Plus rear tyre.
After the inevitable faff of changing that, the track pump there was generally buggered (which isn't unusual) and not feeling like pumping the tyre up with the minipump, I used a CO2 cartridge.
<Bang>
At that point, I'd had enough, and went back indoors, washed all the grime off of my hands, got changed, and took the tube and tram home.
So, this morning I have to do the reverse, with several spare tyres, so I should have enough to repair the tyre, after attempting to discern why that last inner tube didn't survive.
It's the first time I've avoided cycling this year, so I don't feel too guilty!
-
<Bang> ... with several spare tyres, so I should have enough to repair the tyre, after attempting to discern why that last inner tube didn't survive. ...
So, after another <Bang> I eventually found a just over 1cm slit in the sidewall.
Luckily I ordered some new tyres yesterday, so they ought to be here tomorrow, or Thursday if I'm unlucky.
Another day of public transport . . .
-
I was heading into That London for a client meeting, could have ridden to the station I suppose, but didn't think of it until too late.
-
… but I done my hamstring muscle in on the Saturday morning run. So no cycling yesterday either. Twas an electric shock feeling, and felt like somebody had punched me in the back of the leg. I can weight-bear, but is a wee bit sore.
-
So. Have given the leg another day's rest not cycling, and it was like, really like, a pain, having to walk passed all the like, schools kids who, like, say like every other word, because I guess, they like the word like. So, erm, what's wrong with er … erm? And I don't like sentences beginning with 'so', either!!
Should have put this is Rant!!!
-
Thunderbolt and lightning, very very frightening me!
Was going to be walking about in it, so didn't want to have to cycle in and home from work in it as well.... ::-)
-
... I cut myself shaving. Just a small nick below my nose but it took me several hours to stop it bleeding and there wasn't then time to ride in (and I probably wouldn't have risked it in case I set it off again).
I'm really pissed off since it was a nice day and I was all set for 5 consecutive commutes.
-
MrsC booked a Tesco delivery between 1.00 and 2.00pm today. Then she remembered she was going out for lunch with colleagues.
-
Had some boxes of Internet Deliveries to bring home today, so I took the car.
Seeing the hard frost, I wasn't too sad. The car was showing between -5 and -6 most of the way in, and I don't think it warmed up above zero all day.
-
I wimped out due to the wind and rain.
Glad I did. Those members of this community with very long memories may recall a tale of me going swimming whilst on the bike more than a decade ago.
Same bit of road. Water completely across it. Same on the way home so I'll not be riding tomorrow either.
-
Mountain bike – my everyday steed – is borked. So much so, it needs a new chain, chainring, rear block, jockey wheels. I have walked in the last couple of days, and didn't cycle over the weekend either. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
-
I phoned in sick instead.
-
I've been driving to work for several weeks as I'm not allowed to ride outside or even pedal for long enough for me to get to work. The public transport alternative would require me to stand up for 1.5hr each way and I can't do that yet, let alone walk the quarter hour needed at each end. I can't imagine how people commute by car every day. It is just horrible, more than three hours a day lost in a metal box.
-
It was easier to work from home, but that turned out to be a bad decision (hindsight is a wonderful thing!)
-
The ice bike isn't confirmed fit yet. Since last week's skid I'm taking no chances.
-
..but since I left my bike at work... I had to take the dreaded Tube... only 8 stops and each stop was a living hell of bacteria, colds, cough and stinkin' armpits.
-
after 2 return trips where I got totally soaked, I just did not have the willpower for it today.
I am however, getting very, very comfortable with the scooter, which is not a good thing! Am going to try and ride tomorrow depending on the how much ice I thing we will have
-
They said Winter Was Coming overnight.
My bridge opened at 07:29 after being closed all day yesterday, and it was +2.
pfft.
-
I'm not yet hard enough to shrug off a cold wet commute, especially as I'm still trying to shift a cough which has been around for too long.
-
I thought I was strong enough to return running with my friends on a Saturday morning. Well, I'm not. My hamstring went 'boing' after half a mile. Limped back to my car. The bike ride I was going to do yesterday never happened, and I didn't leave the house.
Limped into work this morning.
-
^
Yesterday morning too, and this morning as well.
-
^
… and this morning too.
-
^
Ditto.
-
But I'm taking a gaggle of girls out to dinner, so the cattle car it is.
-
After getting pushed around all over the road last night I decided conditions were such that it qualified as 'ruddy silly', trains seem to be unpredictable and I had the offer of a lift, so gas guzzling dinosaur it was.
-
Seeing as my Schwalbe Ice Spikers proved rather not up to the task on snow & slush yesterday, I reluctantly drove in today & I sailed through. First time I've been 40 minutes early for this crap job!
-
It is four month since I managed to commute normally. I had a very bad cold around Christmas sitting in my throat. So I did not try again until February almost restarted then my crank snapped. I swapped bikes. Red bike was not running well so it got me to work :-). As I set off I noticed the flange of the rear hub had snapped. So I walked it to the station. Green bike had very worn brake pads so I could not use that until I got some new ones. So I go off on my ski holiday. Two days skiiing then I go shopping. On the way back I step off the edge of a firm snowy path and my right leg disappeared twisting my left knee.
So for the past few weeks I have been using train and bike. One or two more weeks and I will be fine (but fat).
-
Running too late to get the train I wanted in with my bike and the later train I can't be certain of room for bike.

I fair-weathered walked into work this morning. Stayed dryer, and as I put little faith in car drivers nowadays, I doubted their ability to concentrate on a wet Monday morning, with heavy squally wind-blown rain diverting their concentration to manoeuvre their children to school.
-
I could not commute today because I am retired.
Must change name.

On the contrary, your name is now more appropriate than ever; just one metre of commute would be too far!
-
I'm working tomorrow and may consider the cage given the forecast and total absence of trains all day ??? but I always feel guilty driving into the city :-\
Well today is tomorrow and am at work, working would be stretching it. The trains thing is a strike and I'm tired to the point of feeling really low so couldn't face the bike. Mrs S needs the cage, so a lift it was, that's a double dose of guilt and I'm now overdrawn in the brownie point account :(
-
I was all set to ride in. Bike washed and lubricated over the weekend. Tyres pumped up. In cycling kit.
First ride since I broke my ankle.
Back tyre has gone flat since Sunday. No time to sort, even if I have the wherewithal.
So a quick shower and I’m back in the car again. >:(
-
Absolutely hosing down. Flooded roads bouncing rain. And with my winter bike about to be replaced, I just decided the car would be more comfortable. Slower though.
-
Yesterday: floods. Flooding outside my work was front page on the bbc.
...
In hindsight I would still have been better off on the bike.
-
I got soaked to the skin going home last night and it was pissing down this morning too. So I took the car of shame this morning, and of course when I left a 45 mins later the rain had eased and its dry now :(

I saw the forecast for yesterday and did the same, took the car without any guilt though. It was the correct decision due to the wind and horizontal rain, sometimes you just need to do it.
-
Working from home now, and no longer get the bike out in the morning for the half mile commute. It does go out, but can now avoid the rush-hour/kids-to-school madness. Having said that, this time of year, building up to Christmas it appears the rush-hour twattery is extended throughout much of the day.
-
The traditional Christmas driving started in early November, I reckon.
-
Christmas party (and I still feel a bit rough after a cold took a tour of my body at the weekend), so the train for me. Plus it's getting to the time of year to throw in the towel, leastways for later rides home, the roads fill with pissed-up drivers who will have correctly figured by now that the likelihood of being pulled over by the police is close to zero.
-
40 knot winds and 91% rain forecast for my ride home. Erm... not today. :(
-
Same here gales n' rain, but traffic was bad going home & it took twice as long in the car, as bike normally does.
-
Really grim last night, made worse by the twunt that overtook at speed as I went through the flood under the bridge >:(
Edit: oops wrong thread
-
I paid too much attention to the forecast last night and before going to bed last night I'd pretty much decided I was taking the car today. The rain wasnt that bad this morning.
-
I'm sick of the wind and rain. Twice i was nearly blown off the bike yesterday. The car has been used today without any guilt.
-

It does get to you after a bit.
This is my first week of being on the on-call rota and I dont want to get called when I'm piss wet through on the canal path into a headwind. So I've taken the car all week. Felt a bit of guilt this morning. If it rains tonight I'll get over it.
-
........... since being made redundant in 2017 and setting up my own business, I either work from home or am away for days at a time on clients sites = Ickle Car + hotel stay or Biggie Van + kip in the van for the week.
(Although when I did cycle commute, being in South Wales, rain/wind was common (normal) and I got used to getting wet. A ride home without a headwind was something to celebrate!)

I set off this morning but just went round the block as there was frost on the pavements and my ice phobia is strong.
It's not that bad up here on the top of the hill- I was expecting worse.
May get the studs out tomorrow, I'm already super slow so they won't add much time.
-
Up at commute o’clock and dressed for bike as I didn’t hear any weather. Went downstairs and looked out and went back upstairs again ! Driving in later, I was quite happy with that decision
-
Not touched the bike since Saturday :-[ I have no wish to commute by bike in this weather, every day has had sleet, snow, hail, horizontal rain and a very strong icy wind.
There were patches of ice in my street this morning so the car is being used without guilt.
-
On Friday...
Feeling like crap - raging sore throat. Decided that with two gut-busting hills in each direction, it would not be a good idea. Annoying as it would have marked 4 weeks of no-car commutes. I have to reset the counter now. :(
The way I'm feeling, won't be cycling tomorrow either. Bugger.
-
...Half term.
Roads are way less horrendous than usual and parking easy to come by at work.
-
Monday - too wet and windy
Tuesday - funeral to attend
Wednesday - Health assement requiring no exerise in the previous 12 hours
Thursday - fairly wet and windy, and cba.
Friday - ??
The problem is that the works bus picks me up and drops me off at the end of the drive, costs £2.00 for the week, I get an hour longer in bed and arrive home at the same time as I would had I cycled, and my flexi is mounting. I fear my resistance to temptation is crumbling, my chain is rusting, and my general good health (as confirmed by the assessment) is about to take a plunge.
