Wow, Rowling may have mocked things from Tolkein, but that sounds like you were happy enough to read Tolkein.  Are you aware just how much he stole from William Morris?  And does it actually make a difference?
I thought LOTR was based on Beowulf.

Nicked, that should be.

LOTR was derivative of sagas and legend, but through the lens of Morris.  There were even wise old characters called Grandalf and Gandarf, ffs.

Rowling had a simpering evil underling called Wormtail and Tolkien had pretty much the same character called Wormtongue.

Personally, I find JK Rowling's prose less excruciating than Tolkien's. Both are pretty bad though.

I also find HIGNFY dull and formulaic. It has become an institution, much like I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

Yeah but there wasn't so much to do in the 1970s.  Even my dad has watched Star Trek, and he's also a soap-avoiding Radio 3 listener.  Not that I think there's anything wrong with missing Star Trek; it's just very unusual for people over a certain age.

Yeah but there wasn't so much to do in the 1970s.

You mean there wasn't so much telly to watch in the 70s. I think Wowbagger's point is that he did other stuff apart from watching telly, not that he watched a different channel to the one Star Trek was on.

I actually found it rather dull: the end of the programme seemed to come without anything having happened.
Are you saying you couldn't follow the plot of HIGNFY ?

Shatner is a legend, not necessarily for playing Kirk but for his bizarre career since.  His spoken-word albums are notorious.
I think "Kirk" was what made the later stuff so enthralling. Shatner was so stereotyped, you couldn't help but hear Captain Kirk doing those lines - creating truly surreal juxtapositions.

(I think Family Guy did an excellent Shatner spoof, in an early episode.)

Possibly the funniest HIGNFY I can remember.  It takes a lot to make Hislop, Merton and Brooker laugh like that...even if it wasn't always intentionally.

I think it affected that part of my brain known as "Shatner's Bassoon".

+ 1. Wait until Sunday for the full extended brilliance. Can't wait.

I just chanced apon Sunday's edition ... I can't remember when I last found something on the telly that funny.  Genius.  My belly hurts ...

I thought that Charlie Brooker was looking very haggard...

And I'm sure that Shatner had enjoyed the Green Room hospitality a bit too much.  But, all in all, a cracking episode.

Possibly when Brian Blessed was hosting the show, another old hammy actor without a brain->mouth filter.

I agree with Brooker though, I also really like Shatner's version of Pulp's "Common People".

He's recently become a father so he's probably a bit short of sleep.

Good one.  Is it mostly scripted?  I just wonder how much the host actually contributes 'off the cuff', prolly not much.

HIGNFY is still one of the few programs that delivers genuine belly laughs and the occasional tear of laughter. Its well worth sitting through the merely OK episodes or even those that are slightly dull just to watch the odd gem.

I'm looking forward to this now - will be watching the extended edition.

HIGNFY reminds me more and more of the cost David Coleman-era Question of Sport, with Ian Hislop playing Ian Botham and getting on his soapbox every week about whatever's been grinding his gears recently. Paul Merton's still funny, mind.

The hosts' lines are mostly scripted, as you can tell by the staring at the autocue and stodgy reading, but Shatner made plenty of brief ad-libs as well.  Everyone else is supposedly unscripted, though the captains are rumoured to see the video clips in advance.  I think they've denied it, but Paul Merton, in particular, is suspiciously quick.

I didn't think it was that funny. It wasn't bad, but it was nothing like the Bruce Forsythe one, which had me laughing till I cried.

The recent one with Reg Hunter and Nadine Dorries was good.
