Borders and Flatlands 1000km 2024
« on: 01 December, 2022, 06:00:00 pm »
A date for your diaries?
Friday 23 August 2024 - 11am start, Brampton, Cumbria
The event is now on the Audax UK Calendar but entries won't open until Autumn 2023 exact date tbc
www.audax.uk/event-details/10107-borders_and_flatlands_thousand
In summary it's a loop round the Scottish Borders then south via Garsdale Head, across the Humber Bridge to Leicestershire then back to the finish in Brampton via Yad Moss.
It's mainly on quiet roads, some undulating bits at the beginning and end with some long climbs and equally long descents but no long steep sections and as the name suggests quite a lot of flat bits.
There are 3 event controls at Kirkby Stephen (261km), Carlton le Moorland twice (southbound 550km and northbound 679km), Northallerton (891km). Finish is a village Hall just outside Brampton
There'll be food and some limited floorspace at the event controls so you'll be able to get some sleep or there are commercial options if you prefer.
Current plan is for a bag drop between the controls (which should work for all bar the quickest riders later in the ride)
Entry fee to be confirmed in 2023 when I've got a better idea of how much things will cost, I'm trying to keep it reasonable and good value.

Well, I guess the cattle grid at Yad Moss will be repaired by then  ;D

Too far in the future to schedule yet, but it looks like a suitable ride for the velomobile that should be in my possession by then. And with Brampton just 100km from the Newcastle ferry port I could even ECE it... (start time permitting)

Opening entries in August 2023 would be too late for an Autumn 2023 event ;)

Yes, I definitely meant 2024, I think quite a few people will have summer 2023 mapped out. It's just to give people a chance to keep the dates free if they intend to enter.

In my head it'll make a civilised 1000 for most riders and also work for any quicker/full value riders, but there's only one way to find out!

Thing1 & Thing2 are in, although I've now spotted the date clash and risk I might get lured into the Italian 1001miglia 🫣

Not sure my Pasta options will be up to scratch, looks a very attractive option  :)

turns out it's feasible (maybe not advisable) to ride both!
MM finishes 10am on the 22nd. There's a 3pm flight to Manchester, landing 4pm
B&F starts 11am on the 23rd.

There have been a few strong riders that have completed long brevets back-to-back (e.g. Richard Leon https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=4132.0) but not very many. HK and I did fairly wet 1200s in 2011 with a clear week between and that was plenty hard enough for us.

If you do want to try daisy-chaining long brevets, ride conservatively during the first brevet, sleep as much as you can afford to, expect the second brevet to hurt and hope for good weather.

I was very tempted by the Mille Miglia, having enjoyed it in 2010.  However, the chances of hitting several days of 35+C heat in Italy puts me off - I know from experience that I struggle when it gets really hot these days.
